I sighed as I sat downstairs, staring at my phone that was now long dead for how long I’d been here.
Man… a life without Wi-Fi. How could I survive?
I then glanced outside, finding the darkness bleeding into the forest.
A smirk curled my lips, and my lashes lowered.
But a sudden scream shattered the silence, and I shot my gaze upstairs.
Alice.
I immediately shoved myself up and sped up the stairs at an instant, shoving open the bedroom door.
To find the room empty.
“Alice?” I demanded urgently. “Alice?”
“Who is it…?” a voice whispered from further in the room.
By the shaking tone, I could tell she was afraid.
I immediately circled around the bed and found her curled up into a little ball underneath the curtains in this room.
I just stared at her for a long moment before my lips thinned, and I started to her.
She breathed shakily, gazing up at me as if she thought I was a monster.
I just knelt by the curtain and lightly pulled it so it exposed her form.
She whimpered, shrinking further behind it before she saw it was me.
She then leaned back forward, tucking some hair away from her face. “Elias…?”
I just watched her. “You screamed.”
She blinked hazily, as if she couldn’t remember. “I did?”
I scanned her form for a moment before I held out my hand. “Come out of there, princess.”
She stared at my palm for a moment before she shook her head and shrank back into the curtains.
I just sighed and sat down, smiling slightly up at her. “Are the curtains your safe space now?”
She nodded shyly.
I just raised my gaze to hers. “Did you have a nightmare? Is that what this is about?”
She nodded again.
I just sighed and set my cheek in my hand. “I guess I’ll sit here until you’re ready.”
She stared back out the window, lightly itching her neck where a small peak of a rune came out.
I smiled when I saw them, wondering why she hid them for so long.
Well… I did suppose it was the medieval times and it wouldn’t be very… princess like to have body tattoos.
“Alice,” I said then, sighing as I gazed up at her, “you’re just the same in the future.”
She gazed up at me then, brows drawing together. “You knew me in the future?”
I nodded. “Indeed, I did. You were so sweet and adorable, too.” I just leaned forward and nicked her chin, making her blink. “Just like now.”
She stared at me for a long moment. “I am immortal.”
I smiled. “I know.”
“And you…?”
“I’m immortal, too,” I told her, chuckling. “I am daem, after all.”
She just gazed down and stared at her toes, wiggling them nervously. “You never talk about yourself.”
“I could say the same about you, my princess.” My eyes glowed a slight red, reacting to my amusement.
She sniffled and looked outside, watching the clouds drift slightly over the moon. “You first.”
I just chuckled. “Alright.” I sighed then, adjusting to a more comfortable position. “In the future… year 2024, I have a brother and a sister.”
She gazed up at me. “How old is your brother?”
I gazed down at her. “He’s my age. He’s my twin.”
Her eyes sparkled then, and she shifted toward me. “Does he look like you?”
I nodded. “Indeed… but he is fallen.”
She tipped her head to the side curiously then. “Your sister, too?”
“Yes,” I said then, gazing down at her, “I am the only demon in my family.”
“And… and the angels let you survive?”
“By mistake,” I responded, smirking. “My parents hid me from them until I was a teen, and then once the angels found out, they killed my parents and forced all of us to fall. They made a mistake, though.” I chuckled. “I was supposed to go to hell. They sent me to Earth instead.”
Alice’s lashes lowered. “That’s cruel.”
“At my time,” I explained, not feeling fazed by the memory at all, “it was angel law to give away the demons that were birthed. You see… Lucifer cursed the heavens to have a thousand daem born a year.”
She looked back down at her feet. “I—I know.”
I gazed back down at her, my amusement growing further. “So… enough about me. Why don’t you tell me about you?”
She wigged her toes again. “What about me?”
“How about your real name?” I stated, smirk widening.
She gazed up then, face paling. “What?”
“Alice isn’t your real name,” I stated then. “What’s your real name?”
She stared at me for a long moment, and I could hear her thoughts echoing:
How did he know?
I just tipped my head to the side curiously.
She pursed her lips and stared back down at her feet. “Uhm… my name is Alice. It’s my name.”
I just raised a leg and set my chin on my knee. “You have no need to lie to me. I know who you are.”
She spared me a nervous glance. “What… are you talking about?”
“Remember what I said?” I asked her, lashes lowering. “I’ve met you in the future, my princess. I know you, but you don’t know me.”
I watched her cheeks shade a light red.
My smirk widened. “Isn’t that just so fabulous?” I said then, eyes glowing a slight red. “Lucifer Morningstar?”
She immediately froze and gazed up at me, breaths stilling.
I almost laughed at her shocked expression. “Did you seriously think I was bluffing?”
“You know…?” she whispered. “How?”
“I told you,” I said then, lashes lowering, “I met you before.”
Her breaths strained, and she stared back down at her feet, trying to recuperate her emotions. “Why don’t you hate me then?”
I just smiled. “Why would I hate you?”
“Because… because I cursed the heavens,” she responded, lashes lowering, “and doomed all of my kind to eternal pain.”
I watched her for a moment before I tipped her chin up, making her sparkly gaze lock eyes with me. “None of us hate you,” I whispered then, running my thumb along her lip, “we are thankful of you.”
Her eyes glistened then. “You are?”
I smiled. “Yes. We love tormenting the angels. It’s one of our greatest tasks.”
She stared at me for a long moment.
“Why did you flee to Earth?” I asked her then. “And play princess? Why?”
She just closed her eyes, and I let go of her. “The angels are after me.”
“They are?”
She nodded, pulling the collar of her dress higher to cover the rune on her shoulder. “Yes. I am the first fallen… so I only have one rune—on my shoulder—and I hide it as best as I can.” She looked grim now. “Ever since I cursed the heavens… they’ve been after me. I left centuries ago, and I’ve been hiding among the humans.”
I smiled then, eyes glowing red again. “You’ve been doing good. No one suspects you.”
She gazed up then, smirking. “I am Lucifer. I am the master of every sin imaginable. I know how feeble human minds work, and I know how to fit in with them by covering their blind spots.”
“So then… what do you do?” I asked her then. “Who rules hell?”
She chuckled then, shaking her head. “Elias… no one needs to rule hell. Yes, it’s its own dimension, but it needs no ruler. All daem respect each other. They do not cause chaos among each other… only to angels and humans.”
“Do you like playing human?” I asked her then.
She nodded, adjusting the collar of her shirt over her rune again. “Yes. I hated my life as Lucifer.” Her eyes darkened. “I was cursed to rule hell, and I hated it. I hated every second of it. I never wanted to… I never wanted to rule hell.” She sniffled. “I wanted to become an archangel, Elias. I wanted to protect my people… but the angels wanted power and control. I fought against them for the sake of my kind, but because I differed from the angel’s ways, they cursed me to oblivion.” She set her chin on her knees. “I was so alone. For so long. I couldn’t take it anymore.”
My lashes lowered then, and I lightly ran my thumb along her side of her cheek, making her glance over at me.
I just smiled. “You’re not alone anymore.”
Her lips curved and she just nodded. “I know.” She then looked up at me. “I want to know more about you, too, North.”
I sighed then and wrapped my arm around my knee. “Hmm… where to start.” I gazed up. “Well… for firsties, I want to let you know some good news.”
She gazed up curiously.
I just smirked. “In the year 2024, despite my efforts of being a dick, the leader of the angel race had fallen.”
Her eyes widened in curiosity. “What?”
“Yes,” I said then, “she did. She was killed by her own daughter, Skye Frost. And my brother, Sebastian.”
Alice just sat up higher, lowering her knees and facing me. “Tell me more. Who is this Skye?”
I chuckled. “Ah… now I see why you liked shapeshifting into her.”
Alice’s lips parted.
I then gazed down, amused. “Skye is… she is very short, actually. Very thin. Although has a strong conscious. She was her mother’s weakness, although she didn’t know she was an angel until me and my brother tried to kill her. But—of course—my brother had to thwart my plans by falling in love with her.”
Alice stared at me then.
I looked at her back, and my lashes lowered. “Although… I suppose I understand the feeling.”
She just blinked.
I sighed then, looking away. “Long story short, my brother, sister, and Skye all hate me.”
Her eyes darkened then. “Oh, North… I’m sorry.”
I just made an impatient sound. “I don’t care! I’m a fucking demon. I couldn’t care less. The only thing I feel is amusement, blood lust, and irritation…” I gazed over at her, smirking, “and… other things, of course.”
She watched me still.
“Anyways,” I said then, sighing, “when I was holding a bag of some cool stuff I bought—masks—I suddenly teleported here.”
Alice tipped her head to the side curiously. “How?”
My smile grew lazy. “I have a very strong feeling my brother cursed me. There’s a spell in the angel/daem book called the curse of time. One must really despise someone and gather sects of their DNA in a setting throughout the time they knew each other. And say Aetas ad annos mille trecentos. I know very well he hated me that much and sent me back in time with my bag of masks.”
Alice blinked. “He… he does know that you’re immortal, right? That you’ll just live back to their time?”
I made a tsk noise. “He’s very thick.”
“Not just thick…” she said then, “he’s a dumbass.”
We both laughed, and I just gazed down at her with a lazy smile. “Although I’m glad. Because I got to meet you.”
She just smiled up at me. “I’m glad, too. I get to marry my demon prince.”
I just tipped my head to the side, regarding her.
She watched me back curiously.
“Lucifer…” I whispered then. “What made you come up with the name ‘Alice’?”
She stared at me for a moment before she looked to the floor. “What made you come up with the name Elias?”
I just gazed up, smirking. “Elias was the name of my father.”
Her lips parted then.
“And you?” I asked her.
“Alice was the name of my best friend…” she told me, smiling sadly, “before she was killed in war.”
My eyes darkened then, and I just watched her.
She just pulled the collar of her dress up again, concealing the rune again. “Don’t you have other night dresses for me? This one makes me uncomfortable.”
I just lowered my lashes, and I caught her chin to face me.
She stared into my eyes then, reflecting me so easily.
“Get on my lap,” I told her, letting go.
She smiled then and shuffled out from under the curtains, straddling my lap before gazing up at me.
I just leaned down and pushed her hair over one shoulder, and she gazed down at me curiously.
I just lowered the collar of her dress, exposing the black mark that darkened her skin.
She stiffened then, pulling away slightly. “Elias.”
“Shhh…” I said then, smiling as I held her in place, “I get to kiss every part of your body, and I haven’t kissed here yet.”
She tried pulling it back up, but I pushed her hand away.
“Elias,” she whispered. “Can we keep it hidden? Please?”
“Why?” I said then, tracing circles around the nape of her neck.
“I… I don’t like it,” she said then.
“Are you embarrassed by it?” I asked her then.
She nodded shyly.
“You shouldn’t be,” I said then, lightly kissing the nape of her neck. “Because it makes you, you.” I kissed lower, starting to pull down the collar again as her breathing quickened. “And I like devouring your skin…” I continued, starting to get to it, “and I haven’t kissed here yet.”
“E—Elias,” she stammered.
I just pecked the mark, making her wince at the touch, and I just lowered my mouth onto it, gently suckling the skin as she stifled a moan.
But a flash burned through the window, and a sudden, loud, thunderous boom rattled the house.
Alice cried out, curling in on herself as I pulled back, amused.
“It’s just lightning,” I said then, smiling down at her, “it can’t hurt you.”
She just gazed up at me hazily before crawling off my lap, and I watched softly when she lowered herself and rested her head on my thigh, curling up into a little ball.
I smiled gently, pulling the bottom of her dress down so it concealed her undergarments, and she snuggled her face into my pants.
“Better than the curtains?” I said then.
She sniffled and nodded.
My lashes lowered then, and I smiled, running my fingers through her hair again. “Breathe, okay? Nothing can hurt you.”
She sniffed and nodded again, getting more comfortable.
