Growing up I used to bully the boys in my school. I’m now a senior and never had a boyfriend. At age 18, you’d think I’d be flooded with boys wanting to date me, but they are all afraid, except one. He’s new to the school so I haven’t really bullied him and besides I grew out of that. I’m still a bad bitch though. No one messes with me. I have few friends, but I was always told that quality is more important than quantity. I enjoy reading, my friend, Julia, writes love stories, and Lucus is a musician. We all share within us the creative arts. I’m an artist myself.
“Klaylie, time to get ready for school.” My mom yells up the stairs.
“Ugh.” I put my things away and get dressed for school.
Time for my own personal hell to begin for the day. I walk downstairs to be greeted my Julia and Lucus, though he’s distant as always. I sigh and shake my head. I wish he’d at least pretend to care, but he’s one that is more interested in others who like the same thing he does. He doesn’t even show interest in his own sister’s life. Julia and Lucus are twins, but they grew up separately until recently he moved back to town and is currently living in his own place, but he’s 18 as well.
Chapter 1: The Beginning
“Hey guys.” I say politely.
“Hey girl!” Julia responds, blonde hair long and curled at the bottom, her summer dress, covered in floral patterns and her eyes green as emeralds. She’s about my height.
Lucus just nods his head, with his cowboy hat, jeans, and button up shirt. He has blond hair and green eyes as well, although he’s taller than both me and Julia.
I groan quietly before speaking, “Let’s go.”
It’s a good thing they didn’t hear me. I forget wolves have good hearing. Yes, we are werewolves. You don’t get to meet your mates until you are at least 18, but some don’t find theirs until 21, and some somewhere in between. The worst thing about it is you can be in the same room as the person and not know they are your life partner.
“Klaylie? Are you coming?” Julia asks.
I didn’t realize I had stopped at the threshold. “Yeah, sorry I’m distracted today.”
“Well, around my brother you get distracted anyway, come on.” She laughs.
“That’s not entirely wrong, but not entirely right either. My mind is just elsewhere. Thinking of when I will find my mate.”
“You are only 18, don’t worry about it. It will happen when both of you are ready.”
I sigh, “Yeah, I guess, but I’d like to at least know who it is, maybe then I will move on from someone who isn’t interested at all in me.”
“You don’t know that he isn’t interested.”
“Oh please, he’d talk to me if he was, unless he’s shy, but I’ve never seen him shy away from a conversation with females before… just me.”
“Well maybe he’s afraid to talk to you, because he likes you.”
“Yeah right. He won't even look at me. every time we try talking it ends up in an explosion.”
“I don’t know, my brother is weird. Let's go he’s already waiting in the truck for us, and you know how he gets if we don’t hurry.”
We walk to the truck, Julia in the middle and me in the passenger seat. I look out the window as we drive to the school. The other two are talking about something but I’m not paying attention.
“Right, Klaylie?” I hear Julia say.
“Huh? What? Sure, I guess.” I say.
“You need to pay more attention.”
“I’m sorry.”
“This is why I never talk to her… she doesn’t pay attention.” Lucus says.
“You two were talking about goddess knows what… I wasn’t part of the conversation, excuse me for letting the siblings have a private conversation…” I yell.
“See this is exactly why I can't stand being around her… she snaps at me for no reason.” He says to his sister.
“I’m sorry.” I say in a low voice only Weres can hear.
“Why can’t you two ever not fight and actually TRY to have a civil conversation.” Julia states to no one in particular.
“Because she’s a bitch.” Lucus says.
“Well duh… I’m a female wolf of course I’m a bitch.” I glare at him but find it hard to keep my anger. I sigh, “I’m sorry I yelled, but I feel like you don’t even care what happens to anyone but yourself and your sister… you could care less about anyone else.”
“No one else matters. I’m only around you because my sister is your friend. We aren’t exactly friends. How could I possibly care about anyone who only knows how to yell at me?” he growls.
“Let me out, I will run the rest of the way.” I try to open the door, but he locks it.
“No. You know we can't be caught in wolf form. Or naked at a school.” He seethes.
“No kidding…” I say sarcastically, “I’m not stupid… I’d strip down, put my clothes in my bag and shift, carry my bag to the woods outside the school and shift back and get dressed…”
“I’m not letting you out. I will take you to school like I do every morning, because I’m not an asshole.” He says.
“Could have fooled me.” I state.
“Oh, for moons sake, knock it off you two… I swear you fight like a married couple…” Julia pipes in.
“Werewolf couples don’t usually fight… unless training.” I argue.
“Who told you that? Our parents argue a lot.” Julia adds.
“She wouldn’t know because she doesn’t have a dad.” Lucus retorts.
“How dare you.” I say, tears forming.
“Oh, I’m sorry I was wrong, she does have emotions.” Lucus says.
“LUCUS!” Julia yells.
“I’m sorry, Juls… but she never shows emotions to anyone. Forgive me for thinking she didn’t have any.” He says softly.
“You don’t know anything, Luke. It’s hard being a female. We have a lot more to deal with than you men.” Julia states.
“From a male's point of view, a woman is supposed to show emotions. They need to be loved and cherished like a rose. They are beautiful flowers but if not taken care of properly, they wither and die. So, if a woman doesn’t show emotions because she is afraid people with think she’s weak, well then there is the problem. Women shouldn’t be afraid to show emotions.”
“Blah blah blah. You don’t know what it's like. Women have to fight for what they want, and if they so choose to reveal their softer side to someone, it should be appreciated, not left in the dirt.” I cross my arms.
“Okay, okay. I’m sorry. There is no wining this thing, is there.” He asks.
“Weather win or lose, doesn’t matter, its weather or not you actually pay attention to what was said.” I say.
“Well said, Klaylie.” Julia says.
“You are taking her side?” Lucus asks.
“I’m not taking sides. You are acting like children fighting over their favorite toy.”
We pull into the school, and he finally unlocks the doors. He jumps out and runs over to the passenger side to open the door before I can do it. I go to climb out and fall into his arms. Our eyes lock and I get a feeling of intense emotions.
“Shit…” he whispers so quietly only I can here, “We are mates?”
“Apparently so.” I say, slightly disappointed.
“I can’t believe this. The mate bond is making me want to devour every little piece of you.” He licks his lips and inches closer to me. I await his lips when we are interrupted.
“Oh, wow… you two are just… first you are fighting now you seem like you want nothing more than each other. Care to explain?” Julia inquires.
I push myself from his arms, straightening my outfit, “Trust me, this isn’t what I was expecting, but he’s my mate…”
“Oh. My. Goddess!” Julia’s excitement floods over us, “I can’t believe it! My best friend! My favorite brother! Together!”
“The Goddess sure has a twisted sense of humor.” Lucus says dryly.
“For once we agree.” I state, though deep down I’m filled with excitement. He’s the son of the alpha. I couldn’t have a better mate.
“This is perfect! My two favorite people! Mates!” She squeals.
Lucus and I glance at each other, which was a mistake, because I suddenly wanted to jump his bones. I turn away. “Please, Julia… this isn’t right. It has to be a mistake. Lucus? Me? Together? As mates? It’s impossible. We can’t even get along. We are always arguing.” I try to be convincing.
“A Goddess doesn’t make mistakes, Klaylie.” Julia argues.
She grabs both Lucus and me and pulls us into a tight hug. This is unbearable. The electric current that’s running through him and I could light up the night. I wanted him so badly, but I knew it was all one sided. I only await his refusal. It would bother Julia, but I don’t think that’s going to stop him from rejecting me. The very thought causes me so much pain I have to excuse myself.
“Klaylie, wait.” He uses my name for the first time in what seems like forever.
I pause, knowing what was about to happen. Here it comes. I think to myself. At least I got to hear him use my name.
