Sandhill crane- Perhaps their uniqueness has been bringing prosperity to each other. A mating full of amazing skills and dances to show off to each other. Which made them able to exist for 2 million years, while barely changing anything about their physical genetics. A perfect life of a bird. But would that always be the same case to all of them? Would the joy still be there, when humans are involved in their nature?
An unfortunate life of a father experiencing something he has lost forever.

I heard the joys cried out of my species, screeching out loud, while praising how my generation was born to the new life of this world. My parents were overjoyed to see me. At first I was confused about what was going on, I looked around to my surroundings to see if anything could help out. An unknown place, an unknown thing next to me, a bluey soft sky with strange things floating on it. Later on I would understand what they were. I stayed there until I was able to move my legs. I was scared however with the comfort of my parents, I stayed confident. I took my first step and continued until I was able to move every single part of my body. My parents looked at me astonished. I look at the strange thing and ask, “What is that thing?” My dad responded,” That is an egg, where your other sibling will hatch from, it will take time but they’ll come.” However my sibling has not yet hatched. I tried to see if there were ways to make my sibling come out faster. I looked around to see, however I found one of the most amazing things I would witness, our community was full of other unhatched eggs or newborns. I remembered seeing a couple pushing their egg around, while hugging it. Trying to do their best to keep it warm. I went back to my nest to do the same thing, and there I saw my sibling. Covered in brown fur, I looked at him curiously. I said,” Are you the sibling of mine?”.He didn’t respond but looked at me blankly. I turned to go cuddle with him. We rested for the night, and day came. When my brother finally walked we both looked around to see the other hatchling. There I saw a pretty girl. Although we perhaps look the same, her way of walking and acting made everything look different from us. Our parents were there to look after us, however since the time has come it was our time to part away. I never got to see her again…
“Dad, what is that thing that is floating around the surface of this soft blue?”
That is what you call clouds and it's in the sky. With this you will learn how to navigate on where to go, you will find your group once it is time.”
Growing up I had to experience how to scavenge for food, navigate on this, like what to expect or where to go with our instinct, how to survive was it. Our ancestors have been doing this since the beginning of time. My brother and I decided to go out in our own to do our first search on how to survive. With a group we joined and said in about a week we will come to meet again.
Who would have known what was waiting for us…
While my brother and I scavenged for food, the other went to find what would help us.
I saw a golden beak with a beautiful feather that was mixed with some brown and white mixed in. Screaming at my brother to move, those claws already had my poor brother around his neck.
“SQUAWK, SQUAWK”
“RAAHHH”
“CRACK”,
I stood there looking at my brother, no dead brother up in the air with that golden beak. There was nothing I could do, but cried for my brother, the other ran towards me asking what was going on. When they saw those golden beaks, they knew what happened, telling me it is not safe to be here. I could not see during those days as I had lost my brother, what was I going to say to my parents? But survival was what I needed to focus on in order to bring this horrifying news to them. When we returned, they asked how did it go, and where my brother was. The other told them in my stead, their faces turned shocked.
I heard my species cry, for all those that could not make it in the journey, an ominous sound that I wouldn’t hear until later in my years.
Some months had passed by, our mating season had come. During this time I wondered if she had come as it had been more than 2 years. I left with the group that I went before and we flew to where we thought it was a good place. There were hundreds of flocks and birds that came to visit. We landed and I looked around and saw others jumping and dancing, showing off what they had in their skill. I went in the circle and I saw this pretty girl. She had others enchanted at her. We both looked at each other. I wanted to dance and take this girl with me, so I looked around and started dancing and jumping at her. I showed her a skill, I showed her my life in the dance, turned, and spread my wings to show off my skill. She looked memorized, and danced too. She threw a stick and I caught it. However, I had other rivals trying to outdo me. However I didn't let that happen, fortunately she chose me.
I was happy on our first night. After a few days of our night. We had one egg, during those days I would protect her, however there were times we would leave ours unattended. We grew up our first child, one of the most difficult things that would happen to us as we were new to this. She grew up beautifully, the way she danced gave off other males in the species to be fond of her, she got it from her mother. We love our daughter as who she is, when the day came we had no choice but to let her go on to her own life. We said we would visit her once in a while when we can.
We left to where our navigation would take us. That would be a sunny place, while looking around. We found a place to stay, which has a neighborhood full of oranges and tan walls. It had three ponds we could visit and rest in between the forest it had next door. We walked around to see if there was any food scattered around, luckily we found most of what could fill us each day. I saw a community of birds surrounded and we talked. We walked close to the apartment we knew, and there was this kind lady who gave us bread or anything she had. We love it, however we were greedy for food and made things go our way, which was destroying her garden. She didn’t let that through. This happens after so many years and manying mating. We did what we had to do in our instinct. Until the year finally came, where things would go downhill. In the rainy days we would try to hide from the strong wind that would pull us apart. After several days of it passing, we went out to savage food and we found it. After a few months, everything settled down, so we decided to go around to our usual place.
However this time my wife wanted to go to the other side of the road so we did. We had a marvelous time together with our son, even so it was time to go. We knew that we had to see both ways to check if no cars came, so we walked toward the road.
Tick tick tick ta ta ta… I heard a noise and out of the sudden.Screech
I heard a loud noise, I wondered what that was. I looked at my wife and counted 1,2… me and her were there. I looked at the street and I saw two beautiful pairs of wings flying. A dead body, two wings, and a trail of blood, unknowing what to do. I tried to tell myself it wasn’t him, but some other bird that looked at him. However, we foolishing couldn’t do anything, as our life was in danger too. All we could do was just stare at our son being run over by multiple cars. Both me and my wife tried to get close until a car passed by us. This person seemed shocked and surprised to see us by the side of the road. However her stopping was something that saved us, as we almost went to the street. Later in the evening we both went to the pond next to the apartments, all we could do was cry out of anger and sadness. Not caring if they were bothered by our horrifying sounds. We went on until we felt weak from crying. My wife and I fought about it, saying we should have run, however I told her it would've been best if we didn’t go to the other side of the street. However she told me this is what we have to live our lives, suffering while maintaining ourselves. I desperately wanted to cry again but I couldn’t…
It's been a few days since my son has died. My relationship with my wife had been difficult, my instinct wanted to mate again, however we both did not want to touch each other. Out of nowhere, I tried to go to a small white crane but I pushed away from it as if I was the one who went crazy. There my wife was watching and yelling at me for doing such a thing. We still couldn’t do anything for months. Suffering in depression. Unknowing we both felt a sensation we hadn’t felt for months. I had to watch my wife go to the road and spread her wings for a mating and dance. Just as I was about to do my part, a car ran over her and she yelped. I cried as I lost my only mate. All these years of living made me realize how much I was given and taken from.
Losing my brother to a predator and helplessing crying for help for my parents. Losing my son by a car who didn’t care and finally my wife who danced beautifully in her final moments. All I could do was just watch the sky change colors. I stand there in the pond next to the apartments and just watch. I didn’t want to eat anymore, other birds tried to talk to me to continue living as that is what they all wanted me to do, my family. However I told them I don't want to live anymore. I stood there with my head raised and with any strength I had I cried all I had. And I drop to the ground with no more strength.
I felt lighter, I spread my wings and ran to fly. I went toward the sky. I wanted to go deeper, as I passed through clouds I witnessed the strange things called “planes” and “telescopes". Suddenly I saw my wife dancing, making her feather flutter for me, my son waiting for me to play with him. My brother told me where I had been since he finished finding the food and finally my parents welcomed me back. We all talk about all the things we miss and experience throughout our life. And there I see my other species welcoming me.
There I heard the joy of my species, welcoming me and others that had descended from the earth. I heard them tell each other lifes and how it has been seeing them. I saw them all flying across the dark and shiny place. I looked at the earth, seeing my daughter. I knew that things would go well for her.
I heard my species…..
The end[1]
