The Finding
As the rain poured down hard upon her car, Amethyst Roses turned the windshield wipers to max so that she could see better. As she drove underneath an overpass, she was grateful that she didn’t jump when she heard the loud sound of lightning booming as she saw it strike down in the distance. She hoped no one was there when it struck.
When Amethyst saw her exit she drove off the freeway and down the hill before coming to a stop at the sign. She turned right after seeing no cars were approaching. Her boyfriend’s house was now one ten minutes away and she could hardly wait to see the look on his face when he saw her. To feel the touch of his hands make their way through her curly red hair, feel the touch of his kiss upon her brow.
“And they said gingers didn’t have any souls,” he would said as they cuddled. She would then bite him playfully. Knowing they would soon be in each other’s arms again shortly, she pulled into the Exxon gas station a minute after leaving the exit. The rain continued to pour down hard. Speeding into the entrance behind her, nearly hitting her car was a person from the state of Wisconsin. The car pulled into the front of the store, taking no regard to the person she had nearly hit. Amethyst’s mouth opened with shock and disgust in what had just occurred. Just the other day she had paid off her car, a 2007 Ford Fusion, blue in color, after two years of hard work. To have it totaled now would devastate her financially.
When the person shut off the car and stepped out, uncaring for the pouring rain drenching her slender body, Amethyst could see that she was a black haired woman appearing to be in her early to mid-twenties. She immediately thought she was a Goth woman but she wore not an ounce of black upon her body, but rather tattered blue jeans with a short sleeved shirt with a faded Superman symbol upon it. The soft boots she wore seemed to give stride to her confidence as she walked inside the building as if she owned the place. Her facial features from what Amethyst had seen, held a short nose and round chin. She would get a closer look at her when she entered the building and then, let the bitch know she didn’t appreciate almost being rear-ended.
Parking and stopping the car at the gas pump, Amethyst saw the woman that nearly wrecked her car walk out of the station as quickly as she went in. Within her hand was a box of Trojans. Obviously she was on her way for some bowchikawowwow, but that would have to wait.
“Hey!” called Amethyst to the woman. The woman looked toward her direction, appearing to scowl as she did so.
“What do you want?” she asked crossly.
Amethyst could hardly believe the nerve of the woman in her view as she approached her.
“A word,” Amethyst replied firmly, her emerald green eyes locked onto the woman. “You almost hit my car and I haven’t heard an apology yet.”
The woman allowed a small sigh to escape her.
“Ok, I’m sorry. Better?”
Was this woman serious? The tone in her voice sounded as if she could care less.
“Actually no it isn’t, considering how you sound like its okay!”
“Well too bad honey because I’m in a hurry. People don’t like to wait you know.”
What were those words Amethyst had always heard about gingers? Apparently they haven’t heard of the soullessness of raven haired women and the one before her made this evident. A wild romping was far more important than the life and well being of another human being. Fortunately that could be remedied. Amethyst quickly snatched the Trojans from the woman’s hand and gained her disbelief over what she had done.
“The fuck are you doing?! Give those back!” shrieked the woman.
“Oh I’m sorry were these yours?” Amethyst said as she tore open the box. There was a trashcan at the side of the door and as the woman tried to grab the condoms away from her, Amethyst quickly stepped back, removed all three from their wrappers then tossed them in the trash. She didn’t care that people were looking at them now, or that she was drenched as well. As far as she was concerned, the woman got what she deserved.
“Well looks who’s going without today,” laughed Amethyst as she walked away, ignoring the shrieks of ‘fuck you bitch!’ from the woman behind her. She was glad that the woman didn’t bother to chase after her. The last thing she wanted to do was to put someone in the hospital and possibly have herself jailed in the process. She walked over to the cashier and pulled her debit card from her wallet. Twenty dollars would be enough to last her for the remaining three days of the week, considering she had it off. A mini vacation with her boyfriend was soon to start and she had plans on where they could go and the thought of it made her feel giddy.
Walking out of the building and toward her car, Amethyst removed the pump from the hanger and filled her tank. Upon finishing, she placed the pump back onto the hanger and entered her car once more. Amethyst had just closed the door when her phone vibrated loudly, indicating a notification. She opened her phone and saw that it was a notification over Facebook.
“Oh my God I should have deleted him!” she muttered to herself in frustration. The friend, or rather former friend was Edmund, whom she had known for seven years. The two had plenty of time to grow close, but as of late the man had gotten on her bad side. With him, there was always a word of doom about the men she chose to be with.
Abusive.
Lustful.
Money.
No matter who it was or how good they treated her, he always held a word of evil for her happiness. She hadn’t spoken to the guy in seven months and she couldn’t imagine why she still had the bastard on her page. Amethyst sure as hell didn’t miss him or his negativity, let alone his wanting to be with her. Fortunately there was a way to remedy that.
“That takes care of you,” she stated proudly as she clicked the unfriend button on his page. No more would he be the bane of her happiness and success and the act of having removed him only made the thought of togetherness with her love made the continuation of the trip sweeter. Amethyst started the engine and continued on her way.
She turned on the radio and had caught the last few seconds of one of her favorite songs. She groaned to herself as the radio station’s news anchor took the floor. Amethyst turned it off, not wanting to hear any bad news.
“Thank heavens for iHeart Radio and Netflix,” said she under her breath. She wondered why she even whispered, it wasn’t as if anyone could hear her. She even felt embarrassed that she did it. What was more she wished this heavy downpour would go away, at least while she was driving. If it continued when she arrived at her boyfriend’s then she would simply make love to him during rain.
When she came to a red light she stopped and reached into her dash. There was a pack of fresh mint Tic-Tacs within it and because Amethyst knew this particular light would take a long time to turn green, she had the time to take some from the pack and place into her small mouth.
“Come on, come on, come on!” Amethyst said as she tapped onto her steering wheel impatiently. It was almost as if everything was trying to stop her from reaching her destination. The bitch as the gas station, Edmund’s Facebook notification, the heavy downpour, and now this stupid long light. When the light finally turned green she allowed herself a sigh of relief as she drove on.
When she drove down the hill she could see her boyfriend’s house in the distance. From there it would only take two minutes to get there. She could also see his driveway as well as an unknown car sitting there.
“Who’s here?” she asked herself. She began to conclude that it was one of his brother’s friends. Or girlfriends, Justin was proud he carried the title of a womanizer. However upon reaching and pulling into the driveway her heart began to beat madly. She recognized the car because it belonged to the bitch at the gas station! The bitch from Wisconsin! Add to the fact that her boyfriend’s brother’s car wasn’t there only added fuel to the negative thoughts that assailed her.
“Oh God no,” she whispered to herself. She stopped the car and was now thankful for the heavy rain because it concealed the noise of her pulling in and exiting her car. Soaked once again, she ran to the entrance of her boyfriend’s house and slowly opened the door. There was a cat that quickly came toward her meowing. Sparky, her boyfriend’s cat, attempted to rub against her leg, but Amethyst wasn’t in the mood for pets. There was another sound she was focused on. A creaking, squeaky sound occurring in rapid successions. Coupled with moans of pleasure just down the hall.
Amethyst slowly walked down the small hallway and silently peered into room on the right. There upon the bed was a sight she didn’t think she ever catch any man doing. The bitch from Wisconsin was naked and atop of him, straddling his hips as she bounced happily and wildly atop the man dating Amethyst. The pair in their lust didn’t see her at the door, that is until Amethyst called spoke out.
“I can see you’re having fun Kyle! She drove a pretty long way to get a piss poor fuck out of you!”
Kyle looked in her direction now and was shocked to see her standing there with her arms folded, glaring hatefully towards the two of them.
“Amethyst!” Kyle began. He shoved the woman off of him with no regard for her safety or his nakedness. Disgusted, Amethyst turned away. “Baby okay look I’m fully aware of what you saw!”
“Yeah,” started Amethyst. “I saw you fucking the bitch that almost rear ended me and gave two shits less!”
The woman behind Kyle didn’t bother to berate him for shoving her onto the floor, but rather began to place her clothes on as quickly as she could while Kyle fumbled for a suitable excuse, not that he’d be able to find one.
“Just wow,” Amethyst spat. “Hope she was worth the lay Kyle.”
“Baby I’m sorry it…look it just happened!”
There was a slight sound coming from Kyle’s red laptop that rested upon the white wicker dresser on the far right side of his room. As Amethyst lumbered towards it, the woman, seeing her chance for escape, bolted for the door still topless. The sound of rubber screeching away from the house was ignored as well as Kyle’s protests against Amethyst’s logging into his computer. Upon logging in, Amethyst was shocked to see that he was still logged into the website OkCupid. His last recorded login was the fourteenth of March, two days after their seven month anniversary. What was more, because that woman was from Wisconsin, Amethyst realized that it took her two hours to get to their state of Iowa.
“So what was her name Kyle?” Amethyst asked, not expecting a straight answer. Kyle answered her as expected.
“Baby what does it matter?! She’s not in the picture anymore!”
“Now that you’ve finished fucking her she’s all used up! Was I not enough for you?!”
“Baby it was a mistake, it was dumb I know!”
Amethyst had already shut him out as she began looking at his FriendsFace page, a social media website within the social media network. There she found the name of the woman that Kyle was seeing.
“So, Natasha Connors was a mistake?! Friends since November 7th?!”
Kyle quickly approached her and slammed the laptop shut. A small crack was heard from the device, indicating that something had broken within it. Too bad for Kyle, Amethyst wouldn’t be helping with the repairs.
“Sounds like you’ve lost your laptop and your girlfriend you fucker. I’m sorry, that word’s a bit nice. I’ll go with bastard instead.”
Amethyst ignored Kyle’s pleas as she walked out of the house. Outside the rain continued to pour and even as she got into the car, Kyle lumbered out as she fidgeted his pants in order to right them. He was unsuccessful and nearly tripped inside of his own clothing as Amethyst started the car. Before she drove off, Amethyst lowered her window and tossed out some clothes Kyle had in the back seat.
“You can have your clothes back and the shit you have at my place, I’ll send it in the fucking mail!”
As Amethyst began to drive away, Kyle decided that he should give a few lat pleas for forgiveness. He pounded on the car madly but it was no use. Amethyst peeled away, leaving Kyle with the guilt of his infidelity.
The rain beat hard on the car as Amethyst drove down the road. The windshield wipers worked hard to keep the roads visible, but they also seemed to work on another task, to remind Amethyst of her foolishness. Edmund had been right all along about Kyle and it took walking in on him and his new woman to see it. It didn’t seem possible, he didn’t appear to be capable of infidelity but…
Amethyst pulled over and parked the car. After deleting Kyle’s number and placing it on block, she allowed the tears for roll down as she placed her head upon the black leather steering wheel. Cheating was to her, an unforgivable act. It was deliberately allowing your partner to feel a false sense of security and all the while, making fools of them. Her father had been a cheater and had been honest about it before walking out on her mother, herself and brother.
“Fuck you!” she screamed as the steering wheel felt her wrath. Upon finally calming down, a thought occurred to her as she listened to the sound of car still running. She could drive over to Edmund’s and stay the night with him. Of course she could always return home, but given the circumstances it was out of the question. Many reminders of Kyle were there and she lacked the mental strength to deal with it.
Edmund’s apartment was a place of sanctuary. Slowly she removed her phone from the inside dash, unlocked her phone and restored his number to her phone before calling him. After the third ring the phone was answered.
“Hello,” the voice said. It sounded grogy as if he had woken up from sleep. Reluctantly Amethyst answered him.
“Edmund hey.”
Her voice nearly jolted Edmund awake.
“Amme,” he began, calling her by the pet name he’d given her five years ago. Her stomach nearly bolted by the sound of disdain in his voice. “I thought you made it clear you wanted nothing further to do with me.”
“I…made a mistake Eddie,” she said with a sad sigh. “You were right about Kyle, he’s a player and only wanted one thing.”
“Told you.”
That almost hurt as much as finding out. Still, he wasn’t without mercy and Amethyst knew it. Or did she?”
“I know what I told you and I’m profoundly sorry. May I come over and stay the night? I can’t go home right now.”
“You want to stay the night?” Edmund said evidently surprised. “In the time we’ve known each other you’ve never wanted to stay over.”
“Well tonight I do. If you don’t want me over I….I understand. I’ll simply get a hotel.”
Now it was Edmund’s turn to sigh. If it was one thing Edmund didn’t believe in was spending more money on a cheating sleeze. Besides, despite everything that had occurred between the Edmund still cared for her.
“Amme how about we talk about it when you get here. How long will you be?”
“I’m coming from the bastard’s house so about forty-five minutes. Is that okay Eddie?”
That was it. Amethyst was lost, defeated even. Edmund could tell by how slow she spoke and the low, sorrowful tone in her voice.
“Yeah that’s fine Amme. I’ll have a pizza waiting for you.”
Amethyst wiped a few more tears from her eyes before she gave her reply.
“Thank you. I’ll be over soon. See you later.”
She hung up the phone and resumed her driving. Silently she thanked God as the rain began to let up. Yes, the pair would have much to talk about when she arrived. She looked forward to the chat and the comfort that Edmund’s arms would provide.
