I have been on death row for 13 years. Today is my last day. Today is the day I will die.410Please respect copyright.PENANANPtBjR3InP

I remember the day I killed those people. It has been carved into my memory; I let out a scream of frustration at the memory of it. The sound reverberates off the walls and bounces back at me. I realise how alone I am.410Please respect copyright.PENANAboZQ2ZKzmH

The cold wind licked my face as I burrowed myself further under my jacket to keep warm. It was early in the morning and I was so cold and so tired and so angry. I was so angry. I let out a humph of frustration as I marched down the desolate street. How dare he steal from me. From me! I had nothing but the clothes on my back, he had a roof over his head and food in his fridge but still, he steals from me. I caressed the blade of the knife in my pocket, I was going to teach them a lesson, that was for sure.410Please respect copyright.PENANAwiaxYWONea

I can feel the tears pour down my face as I remember the events that followed that night. I never meant it be like this, I was only going to teach them a lesson, I never meant for anyone to die.410Please respect copyright.PENANAg9gMEMVyJr

I rounded the corner that led to the flats. When I reached number 36, I ran my palm over all the buttons knowing that someone would open the door for me. Once I heard the click of the door unlocking from within along with the lull of angry mumbles coming through the intercom, I pushed my way up the stairs while shaking off the cold. Once I reached 12a I pulled a hair grip out of my hair and slipped it into the lock, twisting it until I heard a click.

I sit now, in my concrete cell, encapsulated by the cold and the fear realising, that I don’t feel sorry for what I did. I know I should, but I don’t. Maybe that’s why I’m here. Maybe I deserve to die.410Please respect copyright.PENANAs5suz7VC6a

His flat was like a castle to me. The marble counter tops glistened in the limited light of the early morning, the television was at least 32 inches and a crystal chandelier hung from the high ceiling. I pulled the knife from my pocket and shredded the leather sofa with the thick blade. I started slashing at other objects in the room, breaking everything I could without making a noise. And that's when I hit the lamp and suddenly everything stopped, I felt like I had been dislodged from my body, it felt like I was watching from the sidelines as the crystal shattered against the floor and bright light exploded into the room as someone switched the lights on. I felt disorientated, what had I done? I heard pounding footsteps and felt a fist connecting to my jaw and I fell to my knees letting out a whimper of pain. I raised a hand to my face, my cheek tingling beneath my touch and a warm syrupy liquid oozed between my fingers as I realised I was bleeding.

My fingers shot to my face as I felt the ridge of the scar that the encounter had left. Liquid seeped under my fingers again but it wasn’t blood. They were tears.

I staggered to get back on my feet, staring into the eyes of my attacker. He was the reason I had nothing. He loomed over me, his tall, lanky figure hunched over me. He swore, "what are you doing in my house?" He was quiet at first but I could the venom in his words. "What are you doing?" He exploded. His shout sent me back a few paces. This wasn't supposed to happen, I was only going to mess up his flat, he wasn't supposed to see me. I heard knocking on the door and I whipped around I could hear a women mumbling on the other side. She pushed through the door and into the apartment "are you-" her eyes widened when she saw the knife's blade glisten. She looked up into my face, terror glazing over her eyes. she was only a few feet behind me and I whipped around suddenly time sped up and a wall seemed to lift from around me, I felt the solidarity of the knife handle, I held on so tight my knuckles turned white. I felt so in control and without thinking I plunged the knife forward and into the woman's chest.410Please respect copyright.PENANAg3jBfP9f6k

I don't remember much after that. I remember the screaming and the blood. There was so much I blood. I killed three people that night. As well as the man and woman in the apartment, I pushed someone down the stairs in my rush to escape. They broke their neck and died instantly.410Please respect copyright.PENANARDtPJ6Gh2D

Once I was outside I ran. I ran and ran and ran until I collapsed in an ally. I trembled with fear, my hands were covered in blood and I could hear the sirens blaring in the distance.410Please respect copyright.PENANAGB9Ey5FXE9

I feel void of emotion sitting in my empty cell. Alone and afraid I cry quietly to myself.410Please respect copyright.PENANAVgbLF8o9rv

Three loud knocks sound on the metal door resonating throughout my empty cage. I can hear a key being fitted into the lock, the handle gets twisted and the door is pushed towards me. My panicked eyes look towards the guard. He doesn’t say anything. He just looks at me.

He leads me down the corridor and suddenly I realise that these are the last few moments of my life and I collapse. I fall to the floor screaming. "NO, please, no" I scream it over and over again crying into my handcuffed wrists, struggling to breath I feel as though someone has their hands clenched around my neck but I start kicking my legs to keep everyone away. I look into the stony eyes of the guard as he ignores my screams and drags me to my feet leading me to a locked room and the end of the corridor. When the door opens I see a nurse, she welcomes me with a sad smile, telling me to take a seat. I'm shaking and feel as though I can't breathe gulping at the air but I sit on the leather chair anyway. I don’t have a choice.410Please respect copyright.PENANATZcbLhAb75

I stare through the window ignoring everything around me. I can hear the nurse filling the syringe, talking to the guard but I don't pay attention to what they're saying. I can see the ocean from my seat. I remember my mother used to take me to the beach. She taught me how to skim pebbles along the waves and we built sandcastles together, I wish I could tell her that I was sorry, that none of this was supposed to happen. Suddenly I'm brought back to the present as the needle pricks my skin. Tears fall silently down my face as I think back to being at the beach. My eyelids feel like led as I struggle to keep my eyes open. Blackness clouds my vision and my last thought is of my mother at the beach before the dark unknown engulfs me.410Please respect copyright.PENANAsgIkaRK3fW
