“What do we call this moment? Serendipity mixed into nostalgia mixed into a deja vu mixed into an epiphany”
——————————————————
It felt like I had been in the black hole for months. I wasn’t necessarily floating, though. Well not like I would in my dreams, I just stood there, never being able to move even if I wanted to. I was awake but not, all of my senses seemed to be dull, and my consciousness felt as if it was in a dream state.
Just when I was about to give up, stare endlessly into the void, without a care in the world. Not of whether I died or lived. A little light appeared and stood only 10 feet away. Every time I blinked it only seemed to get closer. My eye met with a light so bright that I struggled to keep them open. Just when it was only a few inches away, I tried to force my arms to reach, but they just wouldn’t move. It felt like an unseeable force was pushing them down. I sat there as the light engulfed me. At first, I thought it was god coming to take me away. I waited for memories to flash through my eyes like so many had said before. Or angels to start singing a beautiful song in perfect harmony like others and said. Surprisingly neither happened…
That was two years ago to be exact. How do I know? I was reincarnated into a new world. The first few months had been torture. The first day felt free, the ability to move my arms again after not being able. The thing about it though was that the excitement didn’t last long. I realized that it wouldn’t stop. That I would have to do that not just for a day, but for months, even a year. As soon as I was able to crawl I found out that the world I was in wasn’t the one I was from.
It was a world where the group you are born into can determine your whole life. Whether you become a villain or hero. Home or homeless and In the two years that I’ve lived here I have checked every book in my house. Reading about its past, I’ve learned a lot.
Long ago people lived in fear of the tower where the monsters lived. Then a meteor hit when all hope was lost. A group of people who called themselves adventurers showed up. They didn’t cower to the tower. Unlike humans they have abilities like no other, they formed categories.
There are six categories, hunters, alchemists, mages, swordsmen, beast tamers, and thieves. Hunters are people who are connected to nature, their senses have increased, and they naturally let out an overwhelming aura. Alchemists are scientists, they create healing potions and poisons. Mages can control magic fire, water, earth, air, and lightning, usually, they focus on two elements. Swordsman fight with swords, their physical attributes are enchanted. Beast tamers can control the beast, they understand and talk to them. If the bond is strong enough the beast may be able to share certain abilities. Thieves can disappear into the darkness like they are synced with it. While I. The shadow they can hide is its presence/smell.
Although each category had different abilities they all had one goal in common…defeat the tower. The tower is where every beast lives. If floors are not continuously cleared beasts from the tower will escape and attack nearby villages. So categories go on raids to defeat floors of the tower to keep them in check. The tower can make the poorest person the richest in the world.
A loud thump knocks me out of my head. My head turns to look behind me. My uncle, Gabriel who is a man that age has no factor in his looks, with sky blue eyes and blond hair, was held down by my dad against the wall. I try to crawl away. Gabriel struggled against my dad who was a hybrid between thief and hunter. My uncle on the other hand was an alchemist, people who were not considered the strongest, brains over brawn.
“I won’t let you take him”
“It isn’t your choice” my dad seethed through his teeth.
“And who said it was ever yours.”
My dad pushed harder. My heart raced. Fights between them happened often but never got physical. I look at my hands. If only I was bigger. Even after all of my training as Izuku, I’m still as weak as I was before. I can’t stop tears flow down my face. This is all my fault. If I was stronger, I would never be in that villain’s trap. I wouldn’t be in my world. I-…I…this…
“Arthur, Gabriel,” I look up and the see owner of the voice. Even though my vision was blurry I could tell who it was, my mother, Lilith. All fighting ceased. She walks towards me and picks me up. Her soft finger wiped my tears, clearing my vision. “How many fucking times have I said not to fight in front of Ezra?!” Both my day and uncle lowered their head as they mumbled their apologies. Next to each other, looked like twins even though they were 6 years apart.
My mom sighed,” Elizabeth needs both of you downstairs” After they both left my mom lifted me above her head.
A flashback of Izuku flashed through my eyes. Even though my dad left us my mom would always come home to play with me even though I knew she was tired. She would lift me and swing around. In my full All Might costume, I would lift my arms and pretend I was flying, rushing to go save people. The sound of laughter knocked me back into reality. Unknowingly I lifted my arms and smiled. I looked down to see my mom's bright ruby eyes and blond hair that seemed to fit perfectly with her smile. It was the little things that she did. Like how she was just smiling now, or somehow knew when I needed help that reminded me of my mom back at home…
