"No! Stop!" His voice was guttural, pleading with me to stop. But the song in my heart had grown too loud. I sprinted towards the ocean.522Please respect copyright.PENANAsdHgap6PIG
Around me, steel clashed with steel, mixing with cries of outrage, and longing and pain. Blood stained the once snowy white sand.
The ocean loomed before me, fierce waves crashing onto the broken beach with the force of an earthquake. Thunder shook the sky and lightning struck the bare earth.
My feet hit wet sand, sinking under my weight. My running slowed as I reached the water, the salty ocean stinging the cuts on my feet.
I heard the beating of mighty wings behind me. I swerved sharply, and he banked after me.
Diving, I just missed his outstretched hands.
The deafening din of the raging battle came to a halt as I swam out. It was eerily calm, broken by the occasional body breaking the surface of the water and sinking to the floor. The ocean was foreign and strange, a murky grey of storm clouds.
I came to a stop where the ocean floor plunged into a seemingly bottomless abyss. Time seemed to stop and stand still. This was the place that had been calling me, but I could go no further. I knew because I’d swan here many times before, although I'd never even thought of swimming over the edge.
Because I knew, if I had, I wouldn't come back.
The current here was gentle, swirling around in little eddies, sending clouds of sand in and out of existence.
It reminded me of my home. The one that the warriors above now fought to save.
Of sitting on a cliff a time not too long ago, watching him fly.
Thoughts of him won over the desire to go past the point of no return. I looked upwards. The rays of light grew brighter, beckoning me to the surface.
My back cramped. I curled into a ball as wings sprouted out my back.
The tether I had to the ocean snapped. I no longer wanted to swim into the abyss, to go beyond.
I wanted to go home.
I hesitated for a moment too long. A current hit my outstretched wings full force, knocking be off the edge I hadn't realized I was standing so close to.
Everything faded to black.
