It was a cool spring dawn when I've woken up in a cold sweat, panting and shivering. The warehouse was still empty this early in the morning, my scream couldn't be heard.
The same nightmare...
Every night a nightmare of my parents dying has been plaguing me for years. I can't make their faces out nor can I hear their voices.
When will this end...
I did not have much time to ponder over things.
The carriages must be ready or today's meal is a goner.
I had an absurd constitution. I slept very little, maybe 3-4 hours and got a single meal every 3 days or so. I had to sleep on the stone floor of the warehouse.
The fate of the races, huh...
Sometimes, I thought we were less then slaves.
With my head in a disarray, I dragged my body up and got ready. For today I had around 15 carriages to load.
Luck was on my side, because today's crates were only filled with clothes and not smithing materials like last week. Compared to my usual morning, my mood was somewhat lighter. It was a good thing, because the citizens were slowly filling the streets.
Usually I didn't pay much attention to their chatter, but today was different.
"Did your hear? Most of the royal army's troops left the city! What will we do if we get attacked?"
"Well, that is unlikely, but their mages fortified the wall and equipped it with the strongest iron gate!"110Please respect copyright.PENANAsICoa26JIA
What good does a strong wall do if there is no one to defend it. Was it on purpose? I thought to myself.
The morning went by as usual. When the owner appeared he started yelling at everything that came into his view. What was his problem anyways.
Even though it was still spring a scorching heat set in. Everyone hid in the shadows of their houses or tried to find a place where they could cool themselves.
On the other hand, I was only half done. For some reason I stopped to catch my breath. That was the moment I looked out.
The carriages were near the massive stone wall. There were slits in it for mages or archers to shoot through. It was through there that I saw someone standing in the distance. Not even, it was a small army coming towards the town.
So it was on purpose!
My heart started racing. Most of the citizens were not out anymore at this hour, because of the heat. The army withdrew 3 days ago. The wall is the only thing standing between us and them. They probably thought the gates were the weakest link so that's why they installed such a huge steel gate.
I looked out yet again to see them standing, but at a much shorter distance. There were a lot of demonic beings, but one stood out. A young looking girl stood in front of the army with a glaive bigger than her own height.
Huh? Is she the leader?
My thoughts were interrupted by the bells. The alarm has been rang. I had no time to stay by ideally.
I had to open that gate.
I rushed towards the gatehouse, where the opening mechanism was. The people still out on the streets and the few soldiers on the walls started panicking. Screams and crying could be heared.
Of course they were in dismay. There was nobody to defend them and they didn't think the wall would last against a sizeable army like that..
I barely made it undetected. I blocked the door with a steel pipe and set the gate's mechanism into moving. The giant steel door slowly lifted itself with a heavy metallic sound. There was a convenient slit in the gatehouse from which I saw the army.
They started moving full speed towards us.
It is finished.
