“What on earth is going on?” Were the words I asked before the sun went out. Our head of operations, Melissa, answered me, confused herself, “I don’t know, the sun is gone, but the ramifications- well, the ramifications are happening, that’s for sure.”

I simply did not process that. How could she be so calm? If she knew it was that significant of a problem, what would standing there do? “Wait,” I said, “The sun disappeared?” “Yes Roudolphus, It has.” “How on-” “The how doesn't matter, only what we’re going to do about it. The temperatures aren’t the only problem.”

“Then what is?” Melissa took a deep breath, as if I should know this already. “The solar system, It’s trying to reform itself around the largest mass it still has- Jupiter.” “That won’t work.” “Obviously.” Melissa said, “And with how things are going, It’ll be a miracle if we don’t crash into Mars.” “Then what are we going to do?” “There isn't much we can do, Henry. Weather patterns are going freezing in their tracks, crops will fail, and the cicadas- not the cicadas! Their hibernation cycle is going to be thrown off, and- damn it, every photosynthesising plant will be done for. Dead. Without the sun, there is almost no chance for life.” Melissa then abruptly stood up. “I need to contact the Department of Agriculture. You are dismissed, Roudolphus.”

“Alright then, good luck with that.” I said, what else could I have said? “Thank you.” I picked up my suitcase and left the building, blasphemously tired. Although it was only 1:00 in the afternoon, the night sky twinkled above me, something I knew, as I climbed into my car, would be the new norm, if not for a blizzard every now and then.

I sat in the driver's seat, contemplating things. Things were, put blatantly, going south, and very much obviously so. To survive through the upcoming cold, we’d need bunkers, and unless The Office of Public Infrastructure got started right as I was in my car, there wouldn’t be enough of them. Then there was Mars, the red planet we so hoped to colonize. Well we’ll never get the chance to, quite obviously.

Like Melissa had said, it was more than likely we’d crash into it, but one could only hope for otherwise. Hopefully the Roche limit takes into account its function. Though I very much liked the red planet, death was far more immediate than any astronauts wants.

Finally home, I exited my car, it had gotten colder. I frowned as I entered my home, I had some phone calls to make, even if I wasn't authorized.
