I've been looking around penana looking for some stories when i recently noticed a trend. It seems that people are making the same mistakes that I did when I first started out. Before I get into the tips; I just wanted to say: I'm not calling anyone out, and I know these are amateur mistakes and don't work because I have personally done all of these myself; and I'm telling you know there are better ways to start your novel. These are cliché, you want to show off your own creativity and unique writing style not a copy of a copy.778Please respect copyright.PENANAaDzKqFCGBc
#1- Don't start your novel with an info dump.778Please respect copyright.PENANAZwzs5fVGVY
The most guilty of these are typically fantasy and sci-fi. If someone reads your description and gives your book a try, the last thing you want to do is make them sit through a five page history lesson on your world. The reader will learn about the world as the plot progresses, there is no need to tell them the origin story of entire universe before they even know the protagonist.778Please respect copyright.PENANA8llWA8PbgF
#2- Don't' start with your protagonist waking up/ starting with a dream sequence.778Please respect copyright.PENANAFGVLtCLqMF
I know that because we start our day with waking up it feels natural to start your novel the same way but it really isn't. It's not exciting or gripping in anyway. The only exception to this rule is if by them waking up it reveals information about their living conditions. 778Please respect copyright.PENANAHtz4WCca8j
If you absolutely need to have a dream sequence put that later in the book. Your reader doesn't want to start the book by decoding intricate symbols and the prophetic meanings of the dream before any action starts.778Please respect copyright.PENANAAv6RM1PtiW
#3- Don't start your story with a huge dump of description.778Please respect copyright.PENANARPpzCxCJEW
If you pause the story to give huge paragraphs of descriptions not only does it disrupt the flow of the story and won't look professional. Make the most of your descriptions by invoke sensory details: use sights, sounds, scents, sensations; these types of descriptions really ground the reader in the story and allows them to feel as if they are in the story along with the protagonist. 778Please respect copyright.PENANA0IqPByUHuI
