After school, I got in the car and headed straight to Falon’s school before I even went home. I knew that if I went home first, I wasn’t going to feel like going back out. When I picked her up, she was jolly as usual.
“Hi, Kaylie!” She said, still in the energetic mood I saw her in this morning.
“Hey, Falon. How was school?” I asked as we pulled off.
“It was super great! We had a donut party in my class because it was my teacher’s birthday and she bought donuts for everybody. I got two donuts; you wanna guess what kind they were?”
“Hmm…,” I pretended I had no idea what kind of donut she would pick. Everyone knew that Falon lived, breathed, and craved chocolate, “was it jelly filled?”
“Nope, try again.” She said excitedly.
“What about that one kind I got from Dunkin’ Donuts that time? Was it that?”
“You mean sprinkles? Of course not! You know I hate sprinkles! You get one more guess or you lose.”
“Okay, okay. Let me think real hard about this one.” I said as we drove into the driveway. I parked and turned off the Audi, still pretending I’m thinking really hard about her extremely simple question.
“Come on we don’t have all day, Kaylie.” she said sarcastically while rolling her eyes. I looked over at her and smiled. She always made me laugh with her hysterical personality.
“I got it,” I said. But before I gave her my answer I got out the car and walked towards the house door.
“What? You can’t just leave me in there. Are you crazy!?” she yelled slamming the car door behind her. I opened the house door and waited for her to walk in. She stopped just before me and stared with her arms crossed.
“What?” I said.
“You gotta guess, Kaylie!” She said frustrated. Apparently I wasn’t playing her game the way she wanted me to. Oh well, she couldn’t play her way all the time.
“I’ll answer it when we get in the house. Come on, it’s cold!” I said ushering her in. She stomped in, and I followed, hanging the keys back on the wall.
“Now can you guess?” She said in the most baby-like voice I’ve ever heard in my life.
“Ugh, fine.” I said annoyed, “Was it… was it… wait… hmm. Oh, dang it! I can’t remember what I was about to say. I really had a good answer.” I stepped closer to her, still pretending to think.
“I really can’t think of it. Maybe you can remind me, Falon. Can you give me a hint?”
“It’s my favorite thing in the whole wide world!” she said with her arms outstretched. I smiled a devious smile at her.
“Like this?” I said and picked her up by the waist and started tickling her as she immediately started squirming and screaming.
“No! No, Kaylie!” She screamed through her laughs. I didn’t stop, making her unleash a scream that could break glass.
“No wait. I think this is helping me remember.” I said over all her screaming.
“No, stop thinking! It was chocolate! It was chocolate!” She laughed out. I finally let her go and sat her on the bar stool near the kitchen island.
“I win.” I said after she’d calmed down.
“No you didn’t! I told you the answer.”
“Well I thought about it before you said it, so technically I win.” I said with a sly smile. She smiled a sarcastic smile and hopped off the stool towards the steps.
“What did I do?” I said, sounding clueless. She didn’t reply. I knew she was upset with me. Ha-ha. She should have known it was coming.
I decided to go next door to Ronald’s house to see how he was doing. I hadn’t talked to him all weekend. He was my best friend, and even though Yana was my best friend too, I knew Ronald first. We’d known each other since second grade, and I knew he always had a crush on me. Later on in life, he pretty much gave up on that notion, although I knew he would always have the hope.
I knocked on the door and waited. Twenty seconds went by and nothing. I knocked again, this time a little longer and louder. I waited another fifteen seconds or so; still nothing. I shrugged and walked across the lawn back home. Maybe he was out of town for the weekend. He would usually tell me, but I figured he would mention it the next time we met. I walked back in the house, stumbled up the steps to my room, and plopped on the bed. I took my phone out of my pocket and looked at it with barely-open eyes. I had a text message but I didn’t bother opening it. I threw down the phone and closed my eyes. I took a big breath. That bed was so comfortable. I didn’t even remember what I was thinking about at that moment because as soon as I blew out that breath, I was out.
