After leaving Thailand, my ship stopped at Taiwan. We docked in the capital city of Taipei, where we met the President. Following the Nuclear War, the Communist mainland ceased to exist and Taiwan (officially the Republic of China), considering herself to be the legitimate government of China, retook control over parts of the mainland. Without the Communists, Taiwan is now truly China. During our stay in Taipei, we were able to refuel and get some additional supplies. The President also expressed doubt over what I would be able to find, and I agreed with him. I still have my doubts.
Following our stay in Taipei, my ship set sail towards what was once Japan. And what I found was truly a surprise. Before we reached the Japanese shore, two ships intercepted us and demanded our identification. I discovered that these ships were Japanese, and thankfully we were able to avoid a confrontation as one of my crewmen is a man of Japanese ancestry who is fluent in the Japanese language.
The crew of the two Japanese ships were astonished by the fact that we were Australians. They assumed as we did of them that we all perished in the war of ‘83. Because of the collapse of the global economy while as civilization (or at least most of it), Japan thought that it was the last surviving nation-state on the planet, and the Japanese returned to their ancient foreign isolationist policy of Sakoku. Most of the Japanese government perished on Doomsday, as well as Emperor Hirohito and his sons. The Commies were lynched in brutal pogroms due to their association with China and Russia, and the remaining American troops stationed in Japan were exiled to Korea.
The Japanese ships were friendly to me and my crew. They invited us to the city of Kyoto, which became the new capital city. Once there, we were met by the Prime Minister of Japan as well as the Emperor, whom is named Fumihito. I am personally fascinated by Fumihito, even though I have known him for only a short period of time. He is the last surviving grandchild of Hirohito and he became Emperor at a very young age since most of the Imperial Family perished on Doomsday. His elder brother was studying in England but no one knows what happened to him (or rather England in general). He married a young lady named Kiko Kawashima in 1990 and they had two daughters but no son, and there is debate as to if the succession should include females.625Please respect copyright.PENANAega4pNXOrb
Well, Japan hasn’t recovered from the war very easily. Much of the country is what I had imagined, an inhospitable radiated wasteland, particularly around what was once Tokyo. The once densely populated country has had her population reduced to thirteen million people. The nuclear winter was also responsible for famines across the country. With half of the government obliterated, the Commies attempted to gather supported, but they utterly failed. No one wanted them, and many Commies were viciously killed. The government was unstable to the point that, according to my Japanese guide, the Emperor had to take total control. Eventually, some sort of stability was restored in Japan. The country became self-sufficient, but it looks as if she could have a new trading partner.625Please respect copyright.PENANAMyHdd589Ad
The Emperor and I, had a meeting to ourselves (along with a translator). I was personally amazed to be sitting with an emperor, something that I thought that I would never be able to do.
“I’m personally glad that my sailors have brought you here,” he said to me (rather what his translator had translated to me).
“No offense to His Majesty,” I replied, “I expected to see nothing but wasteland and mutants. I am personally surprised that you and your country has survived, and I am happy for you.” The Emperor’s smile grew.625Please respect copyright.PENANAYdyassU3q6
“I too am very happy,” he said, “I am happy to know that we are not alone.” He couldn’t have said it better.
Two nights after our arrival, the Emperor hosted a dinner in our honour. After the dinner, me and my crew took a tour through Kyoto. The Emperor has announced that a ship will carry emissaries from Kyoto to Australia, in order to formulate a new relationship. The Emperor hopes to start trade with the outside world (or rather Australia, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia). Everywhere was crowded, as people waved in excitement, like their Emperor, happy to know that they are not alone.625Please respect copyright.PENANAFckjHvpoPL
