You pay for it in bloodshed, in violence

Bartered, borrowed, wagered, and sold

It’s loss lasts forever, worth it’s weight in gold

You lose your emotions to help you cope

When it asks for your virtue, your morals, your pride

You give them unwillingly, dying inside

When the world asks for the wishes and the dreams you once had

You relinquish them slowly, your worldview becomes ironclad

Clad in the fury of all that you’ve lost

That the world pulled from your fighting fingers, looked at once, and then tossed

When the world asks for the last drop of your blood and last breath from your lungs

You squeeze them out hopelessly, your last insult unsung

When the world asks for your heartless corpse

You hand it right over, immediately, of course

But then you see something that makes you come alive

You see it and suddenly something starts twitching inside

The world is angry and ugly and blue

But you have hope again, sparkling, brand new

Your eyes register color once again as long ago

Your heart that you sacrificed is now aglow

You break free from the spell, free from the agony

Uninhibited, pure, blissful mutiny

They wrestle you back into your custom made cage

The world once again demands payment, full of rage

You’ve left it’s forces, for once come undone

For this the punishment has already begun

But as much as the world takes and yanks and commandeers

You are protected by the thing that you hold dear

The thing that you love will be the thing that saves your life

You act obedient but it lays at your side, your hidden secret knife

Whenever you need a fresh breath of air

Though opportunities are few and rare

You turn back to the thing and unleash its power

Knowing that for now, at least right now, you can bask in its shower
