The gates of the school were now open and in view. Mercy could see them and it already sent chills down her spine. Needless to say, school gave her a lot of anxiety. She may know her peers, but this is high school. And, high school is terrifying.
She swallowed air, squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head when she stopped walking, pausing right in front of the gates. Maybe this is all just a bad dream and Mercy doesn't have to start high school today, or ever.
But, no. It's not a bad dream. It's reality. She has to start high school today, just like every other thirteen-year-old.
Her eyes fluttered open and she looked around. She was still in front of the school, unfortunately for her.
Mercy swallowed the words in her throat once again and walked through the gates.
Booths with banners of club names littered the school yard. There was one for dance, one for soccer and another for track. There was another one for student government and , but it seemed empty. All that Mercy had to find was the booth for student schedules. It shouldn't be too hard, right?
And, it wasn't too hard. The booth was right near the gates; it had just slipped from the strawberry blonde's view.
She wandered over towards the booth and took notice of the two girls who sat at the booth. She tried to get their attention, but it was no use. They were too busy ranting about something to each other.
Mercy didn't want to be rude, so she didn't butt in. She just stood there and accidentally listened to their whole conversation.
The girl on the left let out a huge sigh. "I can't believe we're the ones manning the booth this year. It's actual stupid. I was supposed to do the student government booth this year!"
"I know; and I have so many better things to do. I need to go talk to my new teachers and set up the club room." The other girl said with her head in her hands.
"There might not even be a student government next year!"
"What?" The girl on the right looked at her friend with wide eyes.
"There might not even be a student government next year, Nevada. What am I supposed to do with my life if there's no student government?"
"You could join my book club!"
"There's no way in hell I'm joining that place. I'll just have to die."
"Jaspy, there's more alternatives..."
"Jasper." The girl with blue-black hair corrected Nevada. "I already have it all planned out. I'll just jump off the cliff tonight; get it over with."
"Jaspy, no. Why are you even saying that we might not have student government next year?"
"Because Mrs. Adix said that there would be a chance that there might not be one." Jasper said, bringing her fist down onto the table, causing both Nevada and Mercy to jump.
"But why would she say that?"
"Because apparently the government found out that it's called Student Government so they're going to look into it and that means it'll most likely get shut down."
The girl with blue hair sighed and that's all she could really do. At least without the threat-no, at least without getting exiled from the Isle of Ikimono for treason.
"I know; it's ducking stupid."
Nevada looked over at Jasper with wide eyes and covered Jasper's mouth with her hands. She then looked around to see who could've heard what Jasper had just said.
Her eyes landed on Mercy and they immediately filled with worry and began to be pricked with the threat of tears. In a low whisper, Nevada asked, "How much did you hear?"
"I've been here since you were talking about the possible, er, most likely end of Student Government..."
"Please don't tell anyone what you just heard. I'll give you my life savings of pax! And hers too!"
"Hey!" Jasper pulled Nevada's hands from her mouth.
"You don't want to go to jail, do you?" She asked in the lowest voice she could mutter, making Jasper shut her mouth immediately.
"Um, you don't have to do that either of you." Mercy said as her ears twitched and her tail slid in between her legs. "It's fine."
"But we have to do something." Nevada insisted as Jasper turned her head around and sulked.
"If you had to, you could get me my schedule...?"
"Oh, right." Nevada said, beginning to look through random folders without even asking for Mercy's name.
"Wrong folder, Nevada. She's the Cosmides kid; not any other of those hybrids."
"Right, sorry!" Nevada searched for the folder with the letter C on it, but Jasper was holding it.
"Here's your schedule Cosmides." She handed Mercy her schedule. "And thanks for covering for my dumbass mistake."
"Um... it's not problem." Mercy then thanked the two for her schedule and began to walk off away from them, slowly. She wanted to take a quick look at what clubs the school had to offer before the bell signalled the beginning of her high school career.
