Something was pinning my blanket down at the bottom. I wriggled my toes. There! That crinkling sound! Another wriggle and I heard it again. I opened my eyes and let them adjust to the dark. As I lay there I could have been sure I heard bells in the distance. That was it! Of course! It was Christmas Eve yesterday, I had hung my stocking - the same one I hung every year - over the fireplace and left a mince pie for Father Christmas. The stocking was now at the foot of my bed. A little kick sounded the tinkling bell.
'Go back to sleep!' My father's muffled voice from the next room. Same every year. Slowly and carefully I crawled from under my blanket and down to the bottom of the bed. A sneaky delve into the stocking and my hand closed around something hard, cold, like a ball. I pulled it carefully from its place...
What I revealed was a glass globe on a stand. It fit perfectly in my palm. Inside was a house and a tree. Outside the house was the biggest snowman ever built! I shook it and it started to snow inside the globe, and words on the stand began to glow red. "Make A Wish" it said. Wishes. Ha! They never come true. 'I wish there was a toy train in here' I thought as I reached back into the stocking. It was worth a try. I couldn't believe it! It was a train! I looked at the globe. It sat there on the bed, words still glowing red, still snowing sparkling snow. Turning back to the train, from the corner of my eye I caught a movement. Did the snowman just wave? Pretending not to look, I casually glanced from the corner of my eye. Nothing. I looked at the train. It was wooden, straight out of Toytown. I risked another glance at the globe. There was the snowman, waving at me.
I picked up the globe again, closed my eyes and shook. The room spun, then stopped. When I opened my eyes I was on a narrowboat. Lunging across to the window I looked out to see the train from my stocking hurry by on a railway track. It gave a little toot as it passed, and in one of the carriages a snowman waved at me. So wishes can come true...
On the table beside me there was a steaming mug of cocoa. Marshmallows, cream, everything. It was creamy and smooth. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep. When I woke I was back in bed. I leapt out, opened my stocking and found the globe. I ran downstairs.
Around the tree was a huge bridge, with a railway and a canal beside each other, On the canal sailed a narrowboat; a train hurried by, tooting. I set the globe next to the railway and gazed at the scene.1319Please respect copyright.PENANAYGzdM2ZBxP
