Chapter Nine
Kara
“So, your telling me the girl that you tried to kill is now one of your friends?” Dustin paces while running his hand through his blonde hair.
“I-I guess so”
“and the principal unknowingly put you and her as roommates.”
“It’s not just me and her, It’s another girl and Iris.”
“Iris. The ghost who tried to kill us and steal our eyeballs.” I pause,
“Maybe.”
“Kara! You are going to get us killed.”
“Now hold on a second, just because they’re my roommates doesn’t mean they’re going to find out everything about me. I’m a big girl, I got this.” He strides over to me and cups my face in his hands.
“Your sure about this?”
“I am” I say pinching his cheek teasingly and pulling his hands away from my face. “Now get out before they show up and ask who you are.” He kisses my forehead and walks out the door. I go into my new room, mine and Blazes. I’m so glad I didn’t tell him that not only am I in the same house as the girl we were trying to kill, I’m sleeping five feet away from her. The door crashes open and I hear an all too familiar screech.
“I have the cellar! It’s mine!” I run out of my room to see a blue and slightly transparent figure run to the cellar and shut herself in.
“Iris?”
“Kara?” Her head pops out of the center of the door. “Kara!
“Hey girl! I see you found the cellar…”
“Yes!” She smiles gleefully, which scrunches the stitches sewing her eyes shut. “And it's all mine!”
“Okay Iris.” I roll my eyes.
“Someone’s coming!” She yells and slips back into the cellar. The door opens and Aspen walks in, the two boys carrying the huge amounts of luggage she has.
“Hello Darlings!” She sets down her bag and kisses both the boys on the cheek. “Thank you deary's, I’ll take it from here.” They nod and blow a kiss to me. Iris shoots in front of me and “catches” the kiss. “Oh, this place is so...so.” She waves her hand through the air and searches for the word. “Small, but homely.” I glance around. The room is relatively big, big enough to hold a flat screen TV, a sectional sofa, and a smallish coffee table.
“It’s perfect.” The corners of my mouth turn up without my consent.
“How much stuff does one woman need?” Blaze walks in and trips over a pink and floral patterned suitcase.
“I’ll have you know this was a downsize from what I normally take on trips.” Aspen grabs her hand and helps her up. Blaze is much taller and more intimidating standing next to her, my mind starts calculating other ways to take her down.
“Ugh, stop it Kara” I mutter to myself. Such thoughts are treacherous, and after all, I am attempting to be a better person. ‘Henry does not own you anymore’ a voice in my head says. ‘Yes he does.’ Another voice chimes in, ‘You are nothing.’ I shake my head to dismiss them. Aspen lays a hand on my shoulder, it makes me jump.
“What rooms do we want, and where's our other roomie?”
“IRIS IS HERE!!” Screams a voice from the cellar. “DON’T WORRY YOUR PRECIOUS LITTLE EYEBALLS!”
“OH, um, well I was hoping that I could get a room by myself. Not to give any of you the wrong idea, you all are wonderful girls and I don’t mind sharing but...my…” She battles herself to get the answer out. “My therapist says that I need a space for me.”
“Wow, you were really open with that. I’m…proud of you?” I manage to say. Her eyes well with happy tears and she embraces me tightly.
“Oh Thank You Kara Dear! You’re such a good friend!” I fight of every urge in my body not to throw her against the wall and run into the other room whilst anxiously hyperventilating instead I pat her on the shoulder and smile weakly.
“Aw, get a room.” Blaze smirks. I punch her in the arm a little too hard, it feels good to at least let some of my aggression out at her. “Ow! I’m just kidding!”
“Omygosh I’m sorry.” I shrug away from her slightly “I didn’t mean to, are you okay I-”
“Dude, it’s fine we’re chill. Deep breaths. I’m a tough girl, not the first time I’ve been beat up for running my mouth.” She points to the scar over her eye. “See this? Had a run in with a shapeshifter a while back, she was fierce. Almost lost my eye-”
“I SAVED IT! YOU’RE WELCOME YOU UNGRATEFUL LITTLE-” Iris goes of in a string of curses one would not expect to hear from a hundred year old ghost.
“And yes, she saved it.”
“I think I’ll take the upstairs bedroom.” I say.
“I’ll come too” Blaze offers and begins taking the stairs two at a time.
“Great.” I sigh through clenched teeth and go after her.
