The Chill Alien's First Log
Let me tell you a story about how I was exposed to this human element called Music. I first got into it very early in my time here on Earth and let's just say I'm kind of a fan of it. So I do try to keep a log of all the music I was exposed to. Unfortunately, some of my earlier logs was corrupted by some Earthly-bug. So I'm starting over with this first log, my love for human music.
Here's my top 10 songs released in 2015 with some commentary. But before that let me just mention some that did not make it into the final list but still some of the most overplayed ones on my player.
Honorable Mentions:
The stripped down re-released version of S. Carey, Neverending Fountain. The impossible break-up song of Broods, Never Gonna Change, released back in 2014 but I only knew them 2015, shame on me. And one of the comeback tringle of RnB/Soul prodigy Jojo in her anthemic love song, Say Love.
Now back to the countdown, starting off with:
10. Aer, Keep You Here1054Please respect copyright.PENANAdMllNM6PNQ
The rap duo, Aer, on their sophomore album One of A Kind, venturing more on the pop side of their usually chill music with Keep You Here. I've been following these guys music for years now and they have really grown from juvenile white fratboy rap into radio-friendly tunes you can take with you on a roadtrip.
9. Halsey, Colors1054Please respect copyright.PENANAl7x5cp12a2
Halsey definitely broke out this 2015 although I'm not entirely impressed with Badlands as a whole, one song stuck out of the rest with its lyrics being one of the best written piece I've heard in the year. Colors will be released as a single this year.
8. Melanie Martinez, Soap1054Please respect copyright.PENANAC88Nf6noVg
Taking a bold stance of creating a concept album for her debut, The Voice alum Melanie Martinez successfully crafter her sound into something she can call her own. Martinez caught the feeling of regretting some of the things that came out of your mouth with Soap. The song sticks out from the rest of the Cry Baby concept with its pop hook and a lyric-less chorus consisting only of a bubble-popping drop.
7. Carly Rae Jepsen, Run Away With Me1054Please respect copyright.PENANAcnVJHLSgO3
I had doubts when people started recommending EMOTION, Carly Rae Jepsen's 80's pop inspired third studio effort. This song made me believe in her potential. She knows she's already achieved super success with Call Me Maybe, she's now free of expectations and effortlessly transition to a more mature and relaxed sound of bubblegum pop.
6. Billie Marten, Bird1054Please respect copyright.PENANASLEWqoTtBW
This English girl already displayed maturity on her vocals when she was just 12 ganing thousands of views on a live session featured on the Youtube channel Ont' Sofa. Marten is yet to release a debut but with two EPs out and a more realized sound, she may be the one to watch this 2016. Soothing, calming and sweet, Bird captures the pain words can inflict on a person.
5. Matt Corby, Monday1054Please respect copyright.PENANAiBWUYys1l2
Thousands of people have been waiting for two time ARIA Song of the Year winner, Matt Corby, to finally release a debut album and we are finally getting it this year 2016 with Telluric. After taking years of making his fans wait, Corby stuck with his soulful sound he's always been known for with the release of the single, Monday. Powerful, chilling vocals once again, Corby delivered with simplicity and grace. I'm still waiting for this man to be on the same level as his main influence Jeff Buckley.
4. Marcus Marr & Chet Faker, The Trouble With Us1054Please respect copyright.PENANAW3PkSTJ7C3
Chet Faker was never one to listen to critics about his music as he takes full control on where he wants to go. One of the most authentic artists of this time, Faker once again went with working on the sound he wants with Marcus Marr instead of delivering a followup to his debut album, Built on Glass. Work EP includes the funky sound Faker has always experimented on with The Trouble With Us. Trust in Chet Faker to always deliver some fresh tunes.
3. Lana Del Rey, Salvatore1054Please respect copyright.PENANAMixoeCBH1O
Honeymoon is a rushed effort, let's make that clear. It still chunked out some of her best songs such as High By The Beach, 24 and the Italian inspired track, Salvatore. I've always said she could have retired with Ultraviolence and the song Old Money in particular but I'm still grateful we get to hear new tunes from this lady. Salvatore is cinematic, somber, daring and beautifully produced, it's the classic Lana Del Rey we all have come to know.
2. Troye Sivan, Heaven1054Please respect copyright.PENANAObgMIpwdBP
Troye Sivan has always been that time bomb just waiting to breakout at the right time and he did. Blue Neighbourhood is one of the finest pop albums released although late into 2015. With so many single worthy songs from the album such as FOOLS, Talk Me Down (which are actual singles with a 3-part music video) and the songs heavily inspired by early Del Rey work, for him and TOO GOOD. Watch Troye become a household name in the future. Heaven is one of the best written songs for me of all time combining a cinematic and spiritual poignancy into one mature track. The whole album is current and the production value is top-notch.
1. Cleopold, Down in Flames1054Please respect copyright.PENANAia4sYyjOIL
Cleopold is relatively new to the scene but his first and only song was a hit you probably missed this year. As one of Chet Faker's first artists of his label Detail Co., Cleopold brings unrequited love into a melodramatic beat reminiscent of old-time RnB mixed with sensual Soul in Down in Flames. Cleopold is yet to release his first ever EP but with a second single Scarlet keeping the momentum, you are sure to see this guy breaking under the wings of Faker soon enough. Replay-worthy, melodic and just an overall jam, Down In Flames is one of those tracks you'd always be proud to have on your player.
