She watched the man put her brother in handcuffs before leading him away. Their was nothing she could do. Everyone knew that the punishment was...extreme...if you used Dark powers. ‘That's it.’ She walked back home to do some...research. She needed to know everything she could to save her twin brother.
The next morning, Rayna went out to get the paper before her parents could get it. She quickly read it, scanning the newly printed paper to find where they were taking Blackout. After about five minutes of searching, she found the information she was looking for. He was being taken to Fiddleford Jail until his trial. She smiled before hiding the paper in her room. If she was lucky, her parents wouldn’t find out. She had told them the night before that he went to a friends house to spend the night.
She ran around her room, gathering the things she would need to break in. She slipped into some black clothing as well before running out of the house to the center of town, where Fiddleford jail was located.
Rayna ran down the streets, slipping into the shadows any time an officer walked by. They had obviously upped the security since last night’s...incident… She quickly shook her head, trying to forget what happened the night before.
She paused before running again, hoping her little brother was alright. ‘You have to focus on getting him out of there, and nothing else.’ She knew if she was distracted at all, she could lose her chance of saving her twin.
Her destination was right in front of her now. She paused, studying her surroundings. Two guards were right in front of the main gates. Three more guards surrounded the fence around the jail. The jail had the highest security in the area; it was the only logical place to put Blackout.
She ran up to the fence, but there was no humming. ‘Maybe it’s not electric?’ She bent over and picked up a nearby twig. Rayna threw it at the fence and smiled when nothing happened. She ran up and touched it herself, hoping she was right about this. She smiled when nothing happened before placing a foot on the fence. Nothing appeared to happen, so she started to climb up the iron fence.
She climbed all the way to the top when she realized her one mistake. Her supplies were still on the ground. She scowled, wanting to retrieve them, but at the same time she knew that would be wasting time that could be used to save her twin. She swung her leg over to the other side ofthe fence before using it to find a foothold. When she found on, she swung her other leg over and started to climb down.
Rayna smiled as she landed on the soft grass. ‘One step closer…’ she thought, wondering how much time she truly had left. If she failed, they would both be sentenced. If she succeeded, she had no clue what would happen.
She looked around again, trying to figure out how to get in. ‘Maybe I should have thought this through a bit more…’ she wondered, but she quickly dismissed the thought. She had to get to him quickly; the newspaper didn’t put the trial date.If she didn’t get here in time, they could put him on trial before she could reach him.
As she looked around, she saw an advantage she thought would be obvious to anyone who knew about Light elementals. There were a lot of sources of light, as if they didn’t expect a Light elemental to try and break in. She increased the light around her before running through the field into the jail. ‘This was easier than I thought.’ she told herself as she wandered around, hoping to find Blackout.
She had been wondering around for awhile now, still not finding Blackout. She thought that he would be a least relatively easy to find, but she was proven wrong in the blink of an eye. It had been at least two hours since she had broken into the jail, and she hadn’t run into anyone, not even a guard. ‘Maybe their high security is that it's extremely hard to get around,’ she thought to herself.
She smiled at her own little joke, and turned the corner before hearing a familiar voice.
“Ray? What are you doing here?” She turned around to find Blackout huddled in the corner of a (rather bland) jail cell.
“Oh, you know, I thought that maybe I could break in, say hi, leave, the usual. What do you think?! I’m here to get you out of here!” she replied, still a little miffed from their earlier fight.
She might have been a little too loud…
A guard walked up to her. “Miss? I believe that I have to ask you to leave.” She tried to run, but the young man grabbed her wrist before she could escape. She yelped in surprise as he pulled her back. “Or, would you rather join the man in the cell here?”
Rayna weighed her options. Would she rather never see her brother again, or stay with him here? She smiled at Blackout, who caught her message immediately.
“Ray, don’t do it!”
“I’m sorry, Blackout. Sir, I’ll join him.” The guard was taken aback, but quickly recovered with a small cough.
“Well, ok then, ma’am.” The guard opened the cell and she walked in and joined her brother.
“Rayna! Are you crazy? What will Mom and Dad think when they hear about this?!” Blackout practically yelled at his older sister.
“They might understand, they might not. I am not leaving you alone, Blackout! You’re my twin, for goodness sake! Don’t you even care?!”
“I-I….I didn’t want you to g-get caught too….” Blackout replied, turning away from her. By the way his shoulders were shaking, he was crying. She hugged him from behind, causing him to stiffen before replying.
“It doesn’t matter anymore. As long as we’re together, we’re happy, right?” she asked, smiling saddly.
“Yeah, you’re right Rayna.” he replied. He waited for her to let go before turning back around and hugging her back. They both sat down on the floor, not moving from the position where Blackout was hugging Rayna until they both fell asleep.
The next day, their parents found the newspaper with an interesting article in it.
It has been confirmed that Rayna Neo, 13 year old Light elemental, is now in jail with her younger twin Blackout Neo. Blackout was convicted of using Dark powers the night before Rayna broke in to retrieve her twin brother. She was caught red handed, about to break in. She allowed herself to be thrown in jail with her younger twin. They will be tried in one week.
The two parents glanced at each other and smiled. All those lessons of teaching the twins to stay together through thick and thin really payed off….
