Jonathan Kensley winced as he heard the agonizing cries of his wife in the grips of the worst pain imaginable to man, or so the nurses described. Being male he had no idea of what it felt like bringing new life into this cold dark world. His fingernails dug into his palms as he clenched his fists while he sat impatiently on the leather chair that adorned the polished hallway. The priced paintings opposite him complemented the snow coloured walls quite well reminding Jonathan that his father was a man of great taste. Thinking of his father bought back memories of pain and regret, things that had too much bearing on the events of tonight. The clatter of thunder rocked the old mansion jolting Jonathan out of his trip down memory lane. The accompanying lightening flashed brilliantly, its tendrils of light escaping through the partially opened floor length window to Jonathan's right, casting the various decorative furniture into an eerie atmosphere. The light in that particular hallway was turned off which made Jonathan wonder why since he gave very strict orders to the head housekeeper to keep all areas of the house lit at all times. It wasn't good for his electric bill but a hefty trust fund left by his wealthy father took care of that. There were things that lurked in the dark, things that thrived in the shadows waiting patiently for the bright warmth of light to be snuffed out so that it can gain opportunities to prey on the weak.429Please respect copyright.PENANA3oQhGC0dKI
Pulling his thoughts out of the otherworld Jonathan stood up and briskly walked over to the double mahogany doors that barred his entry into the room where his beloved was birthing his child. It had been an agonizing fourteen hours since Marie went into labour and the thunderstorm that disrupted the night increased ferociously with each deafening cry that she made. The thunder exploded once more sending the neighbourhood dogs into a barking frenzy. The piercing wales of a newborn babe punctuated the silence after the ear splitting rolls of thunder ran their course, filling Jonathan's heart with joy and dread simultaneously.
Finally...Marie Kensley breathed, her sweat soaked hair sticking to her clammy pale face. Finally it was over. She watched as the nurse wrapped the babe in a fluffy white blanket after clearing her nasal passages. "It's a girl" the doctor whispered happily as she took the bundle from the nurse. Marie smiled with the knowledge that her Sight had given her before her babe was born. She knew that her angel was a girl from the moment she felt the first kick and her Sight was never wrong. The doctor gingerly carried the little person and slowly placed her in the folds of Marie's arm. The sound of thunder and beeping heart rate monitors filled the room but all Marie heard was the soft breathing of her child. She peered down at the small chubby face and was amazed at the startling blue of her eyes. She had the eyes of her father, beautiful and exotic but her face was all Marie's. Marie looked up as Jonathan, her love rushed into the room which was cleared of everyone else but them. 429Please respect copyright.PENANAdkAgzWZIAb
His eyes, glassy with unshed tears, landed on the miracle in her arms. A smile lit his face as he sat at the edge of the bed facing Marie. "She's beautiful." he whispered. Marie nodded, unable to talk because her throat was still hoarse from all the screaming she did. It was a difficult labour as she expected but she persevered through agony. Nothing was going to stop her from seeing the life that she carried for nine long months. Jonathan placed his hand on the babe's head his thumb stroking her soft black curls. He lifted his eyes from the tiny creature to stare into the grey eyes of his wife. Marie returned his gaze, her eyes mirroring the mixture of joy and sorrow that filled his. She read every message that his eyes silently portrayed. Atlas she must let go. She dropped her gaze to the babe who was silently sleeping, her eyelashes gently grazing her rosy cheeks. Not saying a word she ducked her head grazing her chapped lips against the babe's forehead. "I'm sorry..." she whispered "My little Iliana...my ray of light, I wish that things were different." Tears streaked down Marie's face prompting Jonathan to gently wipe them away. "Don't cry...my love..." he soothed "we'll see her again, if all goes well. Have faith." Marie nodded her gaze returning to the child in her arms. Oh how she wished she had the power to see into the future. 429Please respect copyright.PENANA18b1Dw9QpQ
She wished that her Sight was something she could control, something that would be useful for her child but the power that possessed her mother and her grandmother was not something that was subjected to human desires. She longed to see what destiny had in store for her baby, a girl who should have never been born but fought against the impossible to survive. If only her parents had the power to save her, if only she had been conceived by normal people, by people who didn't survive on secrets and lies. She nuzzled her baby closer to her and closed her eyes. If only for a little while, she'd listen to the soft breathing of her daughter's breath and feel the fast paced beat of her tiny heart while she still had the chance. Someday my child, we'll meet again, this I promise you.
