It started with one of those nights that was dark and eerily quiet. The only sound that could be heard was the squeaking of wheels being pulled over cracks and bumps along the road. The wheels belonged to a burgundy battered suitcase being pulled by a girl.
"Now why would anyone in their right mind wander around the streets at this time of night?" I wondered out loud.
The girl stopped and slowly turned around. "Who's out there?" She whispered.
Her viridity eyes that seem to glow unnaturally surveyed the surrounding area. I shivered and closed my eyes as her gaze passed over me. I didn't open them again until I heard the wheels continue their squeaking.
"Maybe she isn't in her right mind," I whispered more quietly to myself scampering on all fours to catch up with her.
I followed her until she abruptly stopped. She pivoted to the left and walked straight off the road. I crept silently to the spot she had just been occupying. I then turned to the left just as she had done. In front of me, tall weeds drooped down lazily. Someone could get lost forever entering them. Someone meaning the girl. Reluctantly I entered.
The weeds tickled my body as I trotted further in them. Soon it became less of them until there wasn't anymore but a small clearing bearing a bench right in the middle, which the girl settled her self on. I edge closer and closer until I was directly in front of her. Her gleaming eyes locked eyes with mines. I looked away long enough to size her up.
She had a narrow, frail body that was hidden underneath an oversized green hoodie with baggy sleeves pushed all the way up to her elbows. Her hair, that was as dark as this night was pulled into a sleek bun that stood up high on the top of her head like a crown. And her eyes. Let's not forget about her eyes. They seem too big for her slender face and stood out against her rich dark coffee-colored skin. They looked like two great emeralds that had just been removed from the earth, washed, and left out to be dried by the sun. Her set of eyes obviously didn't belong in this world but yet they looked so familiar.
Choo! Choo!
The ground below me slightly trembled at the sound of a horn distantly being blown.
The girl's head jerked up and looked all around. Clasping her hands together she cried, "It's almost here!"
I stared at her puzzled. That's when I spotted something behind her. I stepped around the bench to get a closer look at it.
Railroad tracks.
I jumped a step back and looked at the railroad tracks to the girl.
She couldn't possib-
No. I shook my head forcing myself not to finish the thought.
I looked at the girl who was now gazing at the empty sky.
This girl couldn't possible be waiting to board The Midnight Train.
"Oh, dear. I'm afraid she isn't in her right mind," I squeaked.
