Barely 2 hours after Chaeyoung Yoo left the station, me feeling slightly guilty, we get a call from some woman screaming and crying about their dead father in his apartment when she went to visit. Imagine my thoughts when I hear it's the apartment complex where our murderer/murder victim owned, the place where Chaeyoung Yoo lived.
"Think this death could be related to the landlord?" Anders asked as I drove us to the location. "I suppose, but it could be a coincidence."
We pulled up behind some police cruisers and parked near the building. We got out and made our way to the 4th floor once we entered the building. There with the door open we're a few police officers and the forensic scientists. We walked up to the Head forensic scientist, Dr. Sphine and asked for her notes. "From what I can tell, he was strangled and then stabbed through the skull, which would take immense force. But then... We found this." She handed me a small evidence slip with a card in it. The fox card.

"Does that mean this guy was a killer?" Anders asked. Dr. Sphine shrugged, "The bodies that had these cards on them before were all confirmed serial killers. This is just a war vet, as far as we know." I nodded along, but my personal bet would be that he's a demon like the other bodies the Fox left behind. I glanced over at the shaking 38 year old woman. "And his daughter?" Officer Dan answered, "She wouldn't say much, she's in shock, all she said was she knocked and no one answered so she used her spare key to enter the apartment only to find him like this." My head jerked over to Officer Dan, "She unlocked the door? Then how did the assailant get in if the door was locked?" I asked.
"Best bet would be the fire escape outside his bedroom window. It can be accessed from all the way on the first floor, every apartment is connected to this singular firescape." That piqued my interest, "Every apartment?" He just nodded in reply. I met Anders' eyes, "Let's go visit the neighbors. Starting with the tenant on the highest resided floor." Anders nodded stiffly in agreement.

There was no one living on the top floor, but there was someone on the sixth floor. I knocked on the door, only for it to be answered by a beautiful wet mess in a towel. Even without shoes on she was still much taller than me, the towel doing little to hide her long legs, obviously 5'8" or 5'9". I cleared my throat at the sight. "Hello?" She asked. "Ms Yoo, we have some questions to ask you." Her brow scrunched slightly, "Officer Danes? Look, I already talked about my landlord and don't know much about him-" I cut her off, "That's not what we are here about." The confusion on her beautiful face only increased, "Then what?"
I cleared my throat and glanced at Anders, a married man, leaned back against the hallway wall in discomfort as to not look at Chaeyoung. "Why don't you get dressed before we talk." I said.
She sighed out but waved us in. Her apartment was actually pretty big, even if it has as few rooms as she said, they were huge, and cheap. This caused me to question what relationship she had with her landlord again. "It's dark in here, why do you have such heavy shades... and no lamps?" She stopped in the frame before her bathroom and just faced me without speaking, as if the answer was in her eyes... "Right." I answered. She turned back to the bathroom, which was connected by a short hallway of clothing, and closed the door.

We waited about 10 minutes before she came back out in black leggings, and a plain blue long sleeve. "Just personal curiosity, how do you coordinate clothing?" She slumped down into her couch, "Uh, I have a friend who comes every 2 weeks who plans out my daily clothing and at the top of the hanger is a metal tag with the date on it in brail. Then there is a section marked as casual or house wear. Drawers are marked on the outside as well." I hummed out in reply.
"How do you use the correct dollar bill in your wallet?" She leaned on her fist, face tilted slightly in my direction but not quite there. "I fold them different ways... are you just here to quench your curiosity about how blind people live?" I choked on air at her sudden sharp question. "No sorry, down to business." I sat in the chair opposite of her couch and Anders sat into the other to my left. "Your neighbor, Mr Chan was murdered this afternoon." She sat up straight at the striking information. "Mr Chan? With the pine scented aftershave?"
"Uh, yes. He was found in his apartment." She rubbed her forehead, "Is everyone in my building a target? First my Landlord and then Mr Chan!?" It was Anders whose voice cracked as he tried to assure her, "Uh- uh- No it's not like that. They were found with a calling card a vigilante likes to leave behind. So unless you did something horrible you are safe." What the FUCK was that Anders?!?

I hit is arm and gave him a sharp look like 'Shut the fuck up!' He panicked. He is terrible at dealing with young women or little girls who appear scared. "What? Vi- vigilante? What did Mr Chan do?" The cat was out of the bag so I didn't stop Anders when he continued. "Not sure yet, but everyone else we have found with the calling card were confirmed... evil. We call them The Fox because their card has a Fox symbol on it." She seemed intrigued but I punched Anders in the arm because he was now over sharing. There was no need to tell her the name that we call The Fox, but Anders was really into comics and superheroes.

"We're just saying you're safe. Now did you ever interact with your neighbor?" I diverged the conversation back on topic, but she shook her head no. "I spoke to him when I first moved in but that's it. I just remembered what his after shave smelt like and would greet him if I ever passed him on the stairwell." Anders wrote it down in his notepad but I found it as unnecessary information. "Can you tell what type of building this is where you can have a huge nice apartment like this and only pay $500 with utilities included?"
She blinked a couple times before answering, "Are you asking my relationship with my landlord again?" Yes. "No. Just the building." She leaned forward and made eye contact with those vacant eyes of hers, creeping me out a little, "You're a detective, detect... Detect that this is a building for the elderly and disabled. Starting at 55+ for the elderly, while I am disabled. My apartment is actually half the size of my neighbors so why don't you go 'Wow' at their homes. Good day detectives, you can show yourselves out." She leaned back into her couch and folded her arms, no longer facing us.

Anders tapped my arm and pointed towards the door, basically telling me that we better leave. "Thank you for your time. Have a good day Ms Yoo." Anders said to her as we stood. She didn't reply, and I could understand why, I did piss her off and she has no obligation to be nice to us. We did as she asked and showed ourselves out, the second I closed the door Anders stepped in front of me. "What the hell was that, why are you so hell bent on trying to prove she slept with her landlord? She is one of many people who have came in contact with him. What is it about her that you want to turn into a money whore?"

Honestly, I didn't know. I just got this feeling from her. It wasn't exactly bad, but it was a troubling feeling, like she wasn't telling the entire truth about something. "I just feel like she's hiding something from us." Anders pinches the bridge of his nose, "Look, even if she did sleep with the land lord for lower rent, that's her hustle, it's not our case. But don't you think that what she is telling us about her apartment is perhaps the truth?"

I glanced down the stairs and looked at the number 6 sign nailed onto the wall. "I don't know, why don't we go down to the fifth floor to find out?" Anders gave me a stiff look and took the first step to lead us down to our next tenant to question.
