The People of Magi are communities of mages who come together to learn and master the arts of magic. These tight communities separate themselves from the rest of society to keep the knowledge of magic limited from outside groups. When a non-mage discovers such a group, the People of Magi scramble themselves to ensure complete secrecy of their magic by wiping out his/her memories or worse, death.

For a time, the People of Magi lived comfortably until the the early 14th century with the rise of witch-hunts. With the organization of the Church allowing the Inquisition to have full reign of accusing and investigating suspected witches of witchcraft. At first, it only surprised the People of Magi. Then there were confirmations of mages being execution by the Inquisition.
The numbers of such executions continued with the mage population slowly decreasing thanks to superstition. However, the risk of losing entire communities to the policies of the Church had forced the People of Magi to use these magical portals called 'gates.' As they fled from Earth, the People of Magi would refer to these events as the Purge and the Flight. The Purge being the moment in history when mages were persecuted by Christian Europe during the Middle Ages. The Flight being the People of Magi fleeing from Earth.
With an entire people becoming refugees, the desire for a temporary settlement was sparked. Luckily, the People of Magi had discovered there were kingdoms on this world only referred to as Märchen. These kingdoms existed and speculation from NATO and Russia based of the captured documents suggests that this is the world of Fairy Tales. However, it is mentioned within these documents that these kingdoms were very accepting of magic and easily integrated the People of Magi into their societies.
Here, we have the desire of the mages who wish to return to their ancestral home on Earth. It would be the first spark of nationalism which could be similar to the days of the First World War. With the increasing desire to return home, the People of Magi propagated the idea of a war to come which increased the nationalism even further. Tensions between the pro-war and the anti-war mages caused a civil war. In the end, the pro-war mages had won over the population and managed to banish the anti-war mages back into Earth with no support or assistance to their survival. In other words, they were left to die.
The mage nationalism increased which had managed to unite the different mage communities under one banner. The ultimate goal was to return home to their ancestral lands and be a powerful nation. At the same time, the kingdoms who integrated these people into their lands had showed sympathy and support for the People of Magi that creature auxiliaries and knights would support a prolonged military campaign.
In the year 2021, the Mage War begins.
