No. Absolutely not. He hadn’t—he did not earn that right. She was shivering—quivering like a leaf, and God her hands were shaking. But he did not earn the right to see her like this—vulnerable.
It was nearing two in the morning and it was hours ago since the phone had rang. Her father had a stroke and she couldn’t see him. Couldn’t, perhaps wasn’t the right word. More like wouldn’t. To go into the hospital room is suffocating. The air is too thick and the emotions are too raw.
And here she holds herself up with pieces of paper that were far too thin. But to her irritation, to her frustration, to her anguish, and to her oddly unwanted joy—he was here. She didn’t want him to see her like this; it would shatter the illusion of her self-image, strong. To him, she should’ve been the woman that was limitless, fierce, and untouchable.
But here she is, tears running down her face, and her heart’s breaking, shattering into glass. She can’t speak, her throat clotty, dry and wet. Her shoulders shake in what seems to be dry sobs, and she’s silent. And he’s still watching, but now he’s close—so close that she can feel the heat radiate off him and then he holds her and then it’s all right. It’s all right.
