Sweets were spread all over the table. They were all so colorful and bright, I just wanted to eat it all for myself.
”You know,” Ron said while chewing something, “you didn’t have to do that.”
”It’s ok, just enjoy yourselves,” Harry replied. “Hey, go ahead, pick something,” he said to me, noticing I hadn’t picked anything up.
”Sorry, it’s just so pretty looking! Chocolate frogs? Who would’ve thought of that!” I gushed.
”First time with candy from the wizarding world?” Ron asked, taking out his wand.
”That’s right, I’m muggle-born. Oh, look I got Dumbledore!” I said, marveling at the moving picture of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts.
”It’s my first time too,” Harry said, smiling as he showed me the card he got. Another Dumbledore.
“Want to see a spell my brothers taught me? I can make my rat yellow,” Ron announced, holding out a rat in his left hand and his wand in the other.
I grinned and nodded. That ugly, old rat scurried onto the table.
”Sunshines, daisies, butter mellow, turn this stupid, fat rat yellow,” said Ron, he cleared his throat before speaking it aloud.
“I don’t think that’s a spell, Ron,” I said, raising my eyebrows.
Ron tried it out again, not wanting to give up. I heard the door slide open behind me. A girl with bushy hair stood.
”Greetings, have any of you seen a toad by any chance? Neville’s lost his,” she asked, looking around the compartment.
“No, we haven’t,” Ron replied.
“Oh, are you doing magic? Can I watch?” she said.
”Oh, uh, sure.”
Ron repeated the made-up incantation. The second-hand embarrassment hit me hard. Nothing happened to his rat, the bushy haired girl actually looked amused at this.
"Are you sure that's a real spell?" said the girl. "Well, it's not very good, is it? I've tried a few simple spells just for practice and it's all worked for me. Nobody in my family's magic at all, it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean it's the very best school of witchcraft there is, I've heard -- I've learned all our course books by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough -- I'm Hermione Granger, by the way, who are you?"222Please respect copyright.PENANASychInGdc0
Hermione said this way too fast. I’ve looked over the course books and memorized the important looking things, but some of the stuff in there looked like total nonsense, so I didn’t bother with that.
”I’m Ron Weasley,” Ron mumbled, red cheeked from embarrassment.
”Harry Potter.”
”And I’m Mad-.”
”Are you really?” Hermione said, stunned. “I’ve read all about you — I picked up some extra books for background knowledge you see. You were in — if I recall it correctly — three of my books.”
”I am?” Harry asked.
“You didn’t know? I would’ve found out everything I could if it was me.”
I could tell she was going to say something else, but I interrupted her.
”I’m Madeline Caddel.”
”Oh, hello Madeline,” Hermione nodded in my direction before continuing. “Anyway, do you guys have any idea on which house you’ll be in? I reckon I’ll be in Gryffindor. It’s sounds the best by far — I suppose Ravenclaw wouldn’t be so bad either. You three should get your robes on, you know. I believe we’ll be there soon.”
Hermione walked away. I let out a sigh. She was very talkative, I was more of a funny introvert.
”Whichever house I get in, I hope it’s not with her,” Ron said.
(Sorry for the short chapter! Next one is going to be really long though :) )
