She walked through the barren land. The heat of the setting sun slowly lowered to a subtle chill. Every step was heavy, her feet felt like they were sinking in to warm thick liquid that stuck to her toes and sucked her down. The dunes whispered in the wind, the sand covered remnants of her endless walk.
Sonia covered most of her face with cloth, only leaving a small opening for her eyes. The sands twisting in the wind were cruel to her dried skin, scratching it as they blew pass her small figure. She pulled the white cloak closer to her body, sensing the night would be as unfriendly as day.
Nights of the dessert were cold and lifeless, just as she was back in the palace. Sonia tried to focus on her journey, trying to build a wall in her mind; a boundary between her past memories and her current thoughts. As a small girl she was the only daughter of the head of her tribe, she was the pearl in her father’s eye, pampered, spoiled, she never felt a single grievance.
One day, the tribe decided to marry her off as a tribute to the large Kingdom of Aracis. That was the moment Sonia’s heart broke. She hated her father for agreeing to it, her mother who dressed her up as a gift, and her tribesmen that carried her away from her home. Sonia lost all hope of love, she lost her will to live, and she lost her self to anger.
The Sultan took a liking to her, her flawless skin, her plump pink lips. But Sonia kept quiet trough out her life in her gilded cage. Her heart turned cold, her expression to stone never once letting a person hear her voice echo in the palace walls.
The only time she would subtly show any interest is when the royal story teller came to the palace. The stories of jinn’s and wishes, a secret cave of wonders and gold, the life of an adventurer, monsters and magic, gave her a small light of hope.
Sonia kept walking forward. She didn’t regret running away that day; the moment the Sultan left her alone in that room. Sonia felt that spark of hope again when she saw the window was slightly open. Throwing caution to the wind, Sonia jumped out to freedom. Under the cover of night she took cautious steps toward the outer walls, and grasps the first sight of the outside world she saw.
With unyielding determination in her eyes, her steps kept moving forward. She didn’t know where she was headed; the only thing she knew was she had to get far away from that place.
After what felt like a week of torture, walking through the dunes. Her body gave in; her knees buckled and fell on to the soft sand. Her lips were white and cracked; her face lost its healthy glow, exchanged with sunburn scars and a sickly pale face. Her eyes fluttered as her consciousness drifted in and out. Sonia felt her world spinning as her whole body fell on the cold night sands.
The dunes were unforgiving. With no life in sight, Sonia laid there waiting for her consciousness to truly fade away. Maybe God is punishing me for my past life? She thought, trying to find reason for her walk on the edge of death.
Suddenly she could hear the hooves that thrash the sands from a distance. The sounds killed the eerie silence of the dessert. Her eyes snapped open knowing that a number of people were coming closer. Sonia couldn’t choose whether to laugh or cry out to God. Where they took her after could only answer that question. Were they her saviors? Or were they her hunters?
