(Phone ringing)
AG: Hello?
DM: Hi, is this Dr. Abigail Gonzales?
AG:...Who’s asking?
DM: This is Agent Duncan Meyers from the CIA. I’m calling because we need someone with your expertise. In other words, we need your help.
AG: Yeah, I got that. What’s so important that I need to be woken up in the middle of the night?
DM: We need to use one of your machines. The fate of the world may depend on it.
AG: How so?
DM: There’s something under the surface. Something dangerous. We need to borrow the machine you created to create tunnels underground so we can destroy it. Don’t worry, no one will get hurt.
AG: That machine was made to create homes for burrowing owls, not design tunnels to transport humans to alleged underground threats.
DM: It can be repurposed. It’ll take a few modifications, that’s for sure, but I’ll assume you can handle those.
AG: I can handle them.
DM: Good. Thank you for your compliance.
AG: Wait – I didn’t-
(Call Disconnect)
Unknown: Did you convince her?
DM: *sigh* Yes sir.
Unknown: Good. Because whatever’s down there is powerful. We need to get to it first before someone else picks up the scent.
DM: What if we just left it down there?
Unknown: Don’t you want to protect your family?
DM: Yes sir, but-
Unknown: We could use that power to keep our people safe. Do you understand what I’m saying?
DM:...Yes sir.
Unknown: Good. And Duncan?
DM: Yes?
Unknown: Don’t ever question my orders again.
DM: Understood, sir.

Abigail reluctantly hammered away at her device, her mind racing. Something wasn’t right. Still, she kept adding the modifications she’d been asked to, until someone else entered the room. Abigail’s wife, Rebecca, stood in the doorway, watching her with an amused expression.

“Oh. Hello Rebecca.” Abigail said nervously.
“What are you doing up this late?”

“I heard you tinkering with your machine, and came to see what was happening.” Rebecca said calmly. “Why are you messing with the tunnel machine?”

Abigail hesitated. “Some person claiming to be in the CIA said they needed to use the machine to check out something below the earth’s surface.” Abigail said. “I was told to modify it, but I feel like something’s wrong. Like I’ve been…lied to.”

“Then come up with a backup plan.” Rebecca suggested. “A way to shut it down if it turns out that they lied to you.”

“That’s a good idea.” Abigail said with a small smile.

“I can help you with the coding” Rebecca said. “You take care of the engineering bit.”
182Please respect copyright.PENANAaSQAq1EErD
“That would be great.” Abigail said, relieved.

“I know you’ll do the right thing.” Rebecca said.

“Thank you.” Abigail said.

“Let’s get to work.” Rebecca said.

RETURNING TO AUDIO MODE…
(Phone ringing)
AG: Did you receive my package?
DM: Yes. You made the right choice.
AG: Stop.
DM: *pauses* Alright. We’re about to start the machine. Thanks to you we can safely retrieve whatever dangerous object is down there.
AG: Retrieve it?
DM: I meant destroy it.
AG: How do you know that “destroying” it isn’t going to hurt anyone? What if destroying it causes it to have a destructive reaction?
DM: We don’t. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
AG: But you said no one would get hurt.
DM: *sigh* Maybe that wasn’t the full truth.
AG: Then what is?
The Drill: SYSTEM ONLINE. RUNNING PROGRAM IN 3…2…
DM: Sorry about this.
The Drill:…1

The ground shakes as holes tear open the earth’s surface. Homes are destroyed all across the world as many people fall through the holes and into the labyrinth. Every day, more holes open, and more people fall victim to the labyrinth. The only way back is to complete the maze. 182Please respect copyright.PENANALyCTiB7pkf
Many die trying to navigate to the end, killed by one of the many horrors within. Duncan Meyers was the first of many to die in the maze, along with most of the agents who were present when the device exploded. 182Please respect copyright.PENANAVBoOn4dtQm
Abigail Gonzales fortifies her home and shelters as many of The Tearing’s survivors as possible. She searches endlessly for a solution, with little success. No one knows when The Tearing will end, and no one knows if they’ll ever see their loved ones again.
