I remember the day when the world became monitored.
The news flashed on, the woman on the screen speaking looked blank. Her eyes dull, her mouth straight as a line.
"Emotions lead to rebellion, and that may cause the overthrowing of our lords. Emotion is now punishable by death" it sounded something like that. Though it was 5 years ago, so the whole memory is blurry.
But I knew how the moment felt, fear, but no way to react. So I just froze, like I was paralyzed.
I probably should remember it, the worst moment of my life, yet it's so blurry.
Shortly after we were all assigned jobs, the currency system was replaced with credits. You were given only given enough for a 'apartment' that was more like a hotel room and only enough food to live.
My friend told me of a place, beyond the borders of where they could control. But mid story, she smiled. That was the first death I've ever experienced. She screamed and hid her head in fear.
But when your seen by them, theres no escaping it.
Now I work at a gas station.
But only those with executive clearing can drive, so its empty except for the occasional high level person. They hide their faces with masks, so the general public doesn't hunt them down. I see a familiar face walk into the station. Brown hair, blue eyes, a calm face that almost begged to show emotion. Be he stayed blank.
"Serena, do you remember me?" He asked. His dark brown long brown hair fell over his eyes. I was a bit shy at his glowing appearance. He looked like a greek statue, perfect in every way. I looked a bit closer, narrowing my eyes deeply in thought. All the memories came flashing back. He was my best friend before this all started, he dissapeared the second it started.
"Alias?" I ask in shock.
"I'm sorry for everything, but serena you need to trust me, do you trust me?" He asks.
"I don't know, you dissapeared without an explanation for 5 years. I thought you hated me" I said trying not to express my hurt.
"Of course not! Though I cant tell you anything about it. I just need you to trust me" he says, leaning over the counter.
"Tell me about what?" I mumble in confusion.
"Cant even tell you that" he shrugs. I think of all the pleasant memories, how much I cared for him. I stay silent, pondering is the idea was smart. I sigh.
"Yes, I trust you" I say staring into his indigo eyes that shimmered like tanzanite stones.
He seemed to light up, and grabbed my hand aggressively.
"Let's run away together" he says with full seriousness.
He pulled on my arm rushing me out of the gas station into the inky black night. He was pulling me faster than I could run so I was tripping over my feet and stumbling.
"Thank you so much" he sighed, as we ran across the forested area, with firs so high they seemed to ascend all the way to heaven. I look up at the stars, the night was clear and every star was out, shimmering like gemstones. I was huffing with fatigue after running for a few minutes.
"Can, we, stop" I wheezed between breaths.
"Nope, sorry" he said playfully, reminding me of his old teasing self. It stung remembering just how much I missed his presence.
It seemed like hours when we stopped, but knowing my terrible running endurance it was probably only like a half hour. I smelled salt and heard the crashing of waves but could barely see in the midnight darkness. It also probably didnt help that it was a new moon so it was even darker than usual.
"The beach?" I ask with confusion.
"Yup, you'll understand in a second." He said. He was close enough to see luckily, so I studied his face as his ocean colored eyes studied the surroundings. I see the lights from a large cruise like ship. And the beach thing made sense but I was still confused about everything else. I see another figure walking towards us.
"You found her" the male voice said with surprise. He was very fast, I blinked and a rag was over my mouth.
Chloroform I'd assume, because I went unconscious in seconds.
I blinked my eyes open, fluttering my eyelashes tiredly. Elias was smiling so hard I thought he might get stuck like that.
"Were aloud to feel here!" He yells pulling me into a warm hug. I feel 5 years worth of tears drip down my face, I sob into his chest with happiness.
"I'm free!" I cheered, running across the foreign place.
"This is why I disappeared, I was finding this place, for us!" He says.
"I found this place and knew I had to find you, and then I stumbled into a gas station and there you were. As beautiful as ever" he explained.
"You did that all for me?" I ask in shock, I was not used to someone caring for me so much.
"Of course!" He laughed.
"B-but why?" I asked.
"Because I love you!" He yelled. I ran forward and went on my tip toes and kissed him on the lips. I smiled and felt love again, just happy to have emotion at all.
