Prologue
Gods... Demi-Gods... Mortal Men? Doesn't make much of a difference now. Similar in their savagery, lust, and greed. Pillaging through death and destruction for purposes of power while the smell of blood grips and hangs on the scent of the air. The light breeze felt heavy as the sunlight broke through the clouds and its rays drifted across my skin warming it. The clouds began to gracefully pass through the sky as if dancing in and out of the beams just like the deer in the meadows from when I was a boy. I remember trying to run and jump to match their grace as I chased them up and down the green wildflower-covered hills of my home. Never tiring, never struggling to catch my breath.
That seems so long, distant, and far away now, a lifetime ago or maybe just yesterday. All the memories of my life jumbled around and mixed as I see them play out in my mind, hard to tell what is real or fantasy anymore. My body feels heavy now, so damn heavy. When did my body become like an anchor planting itself into the ground and rooting itself in a reef of the most bottomless void? Trying to get to my feet, I feel like an infant managing his first steps. I get up to my knees, resting my overbearing weight on my golden shield, dented and worn, using it as a crutch. I can feel my ribs groaning and cracking more with each movement. I stare at the ground begging in my mind that it would help to push me to my feet. All the while wishing, hoping, even cursing it to provide the aid that I desperately need.
Time is moving slower now as I can count the moments between seconds recounting the events that led me to this one place in time. Why... why is this one grain of sand of the hourglass taking an eternity to tumble and fall? It's funny, the old man said it would be this way at the end, and why not? All things die eventually. I can feel the cold creeping in and the blood running down my arm as it traces down the curves of the edges of my forearms. Drifting until it drips off the tips of my fingers with gravity pulling it down joining with the pool that has formed beneath me. Holding my hand up to block the sun from my eyes I can see it glycine and sparkle with only one word that rushes back to me that I can manage to say out loud... "Beautiful". Death... death is beautiful and today, yes today, would be the day that I die.
