The Window

Upon walking into his room he removed his wife-beater and wiped the sweat off his brow. Steven wanted nothing more than to relax in the comfort of his bed and that time was a mere second away. However before he did so he would have to shut the window. In the back of his house was an apartment complex and lately because of the noise that came from there he couldn’t get the sleep he wanted or needed. For the past five days he had heard a couple arguing and fighting over something, of which he didn’t know nor did he care. None of it helped his sleep schedule.
When he walked over to the window he purposed to close the curtain and shut the window when he beheld a woman appearing to be in her early twenties inside a room in his view. Her hair was chestnut but he could not make out her eye color from where he was. He knew that this was not the woman that had been keeping him awake, this was someone new. When she took off her shirt Steven closed the curtain so as not to raise suspicion, but he left the window open so he could hear the sounds coming from the room. Sadly she kept the window in the room down. When she undressed, he watched her intently, admiring her young womanly features.
Before he could fully enjoy the show a man walked in the room and embraced her. The woman smiled at the muscular Caucasian brown haired man who entered and she embraced him in a heated kiss. Steven gathered that the man had finally had enough of the woman he had argued with and had either thrown her out or had simply stopped coming by. The man removed his shirt and the two unknowingly removed themselves from his view. Steven silently wished that the woman was in his embrace. He was confident in his abilities to please women. He sighed loudly in his lonely house and threw himself on his bed.

A few days later when he returned from work he turned on his fan to let some cool air in the room. One season he hated was summer as the sun burned hot and his skinned turned red. He found it embarrassing. Just as he was about to open the window the woman appeared in the room once again. Quickly Steven closed the curtain and watched from a small open space within them. The woman removed her clothing and dressed into some house clothes before the man walked into the room the join her. Damn it! That man would always spoil his view! This time, Steve decided that he would remain by the window and watch the couple behind his house. He went to the kitchen, got a chair and sat down. After sitting for a half hour the television came on and a movie began to play. Scream was the title. The two must have a love for early two thousand movies. No matter, he had never seen the movie so he would watch it, albeit without sound. The man always seemed to have his window closed.
When the movie ended Steven found that he had fallen asleep. He quickly rose from the chair hoping that he wasn’t found out by the people across from him. Cautiously he moved on side of the curtain to peer out. The television was turned off and the room was empty. Relief set in as he sat on his bed, realizing that if he were caught, his free view would be over. He didn’t need for that to happen.
His phone vibrated upon his bed so quietly that Steven barely heard the sound. He had set it on low so that he could not hear it when he slept. It never failed that whenever he slept the phone would blow up. Looking at the ID his saw that it was his friend Catelynn. Catelynn was a twenty-five year old woman who, although was obsessed with climbing the legal leader, was annoying and downright boring. He spent some time with her last week, an event that was uneventful. The pair had watched a movie and when it was over, she babbled about her achievements in the lawyer field for a half hour before she left. Hell, he didn’t even get laid like he had hoped.
He decided that he would ignore her call and his decision to do so was reinforced when he heard a sound out the window. He carefully peered out and saw that the couple had returned from somewhere. The two appeared nervous and began talking to each other in what appeared to be bated breaths. What had happened? Shortly after this, the man was hurriedly helping the woman remove some clothing, much to his pleasure. Sadly, once removed, they resigned themselves from his view. He silently cursed his luck as he watched for any bodily sign of the two. Finally he grew tired of the wait and flung himself on the bed. He looked at his phone and saw that Catelynn had left him a voicemail. Instantly he deleted it, not caring about what she wanted. Looking forward to the next time when the woman would appear in front of the window once more, he closed his eyes and slept.

Two days later when Steven returned home from work, he once again threw his things onto the floor then sat in the chair he placed beside the window. As of late, the woman on the other side occupied his thoughts. While he did get a good look at her topless, he wanted to see her in her full glory. Once again the woman came into the room and removed her shirt, but this time she removed it in a fashion that resembled anger. Steven wondered what could have set her off. Did the boyfriend say or do something? Did she have a bad day? The man came into the room, flailing his arms about while he argued with the woman. Because the window was closed, he couldn’t make out what they were saying. The woman pointed in his face and the man swatted it away. Perhaps he had cheated. Steve looked on as the argument continued. He saw that the woman held up a picture of a person, from where he was couldn’t make out the gender. The man began rubbing his head nervously and soon Steven found out why. The topless woman produced a gun and she began yelling, pointing at the man then to the gun she then threw to the bed. Steven placed a hand to his mouth, wondering if he had two murderers living in the back of his house.
The woman placed another shirt upon her upper body before slapping the man, causing him to stumble back. The man rose back up with a blunt object and struck her upon the head with it. Steven watched with horror as the woman slowly recovered, felt the place where he struck her, and then, engage him in a heated kiss. He couldn’t believe what he was watching. Why the hell didn’t she run away or shoot him?! Perhaps these two were a match made in hell.
The woman removed her shirt once again and did the unspeakable. She looked out the window and saw Steven looking. Saw him! Steven jerked back a bit as the woman wore a disgusted look about herself before angrily shutting the curtains. Steve felt his heart pound within his chest as it became apparent he had seen too much. A man and woman making love after abuse, a gun, a picture, and… his phone vibrated loudly. It was Catelynn sending a text. When he opened the message, it was urgent.
“Steven! I tried calling you two days ago! Are you alright?! Listen there was a murder that happened a few days ago and I know the people involved! Their names are Travis Lines and Vanessa Case! They live right behind you! Leave ASAP!”
No sooner had he read the text, he heard loud banging at the door. Steven dropped the phone to see who it might be. Upon looking through the peephole, he saw that it was the man he had watched in the window!
“Open this fucking door you fucking voyeur!” he shouted madly. Steven backed up and ran for the back door. He wasn’t about to fall victim to these people, he still had life to live! Adrenaline helped his run to the door, including in his speed in opening it. Sadly, it didn’t help him with the gunshots he felt pierce his body when he opened the door. The woman, Vanessa, had shot him point blank range in the chest and Steve fell flat upon the floor. He could not believe that his life was ending this way, in this manner, in his own home in his own blood. He barely heard the pair walk inside the house and discuss what to do with him.
“We have to move, it won’t be long before someone calls the cops!” Vanessa said fearfully. “Did we have to kill him?!”
“Who knows what he heard, we had to! Come on, let’s clean this up!”
As Steven felt his life depart from him, he barely felt the two lift his body to attempt to cover up his murder.
