I took the metro to work. My hair tied in a messy bun, earplugs on, looking sleep deprived and absolutely not my best.
I worked as a noodle chef at the HAIMS, a popular asian cuisine restaurant located in the new york times square. My job was actually pretty cool, if you take out the being overworked part. I mean it helped me pay my bills, and afford a room in one of the most expensive city in the world, plus it also involved meeting with a lot of popular chefs and celebrities since we were the leading restaurant. I was basically living my brown girl dream to finally be free, and happy on my own.
I rested my head on the window, and a notification popped up. Someone wished me a happy birthday in the family group chat.
'what an incredible birthday' i ironically said to myself. This was my first birthday without my family, and i was missing them so much. Back in my country, my mother used to cook an entire feast on my special day, and here I was, going to work, looking like a dead snail straight out of the basement.
I hopped off the metro at my station, and went into my workplace. It was hardly 50 m away. My coworker susan greeted me a good morning with a smile as I was wearing my apron and gloves, and i greeted her back with a smile. We both then went in the kitchen to get things done. It was a big order we were preparing today, for some music band's crew I heard.
'you cook the chicken broth noodles and I'll look after the cheese corn dogs' susan suggested.
'yea sure, I mean they don't call me noodles fairy for no reason ' I replied with a chuckle and flipped my hair dramatically. Susan laughed. I've worked with her for about 8 months and to be honest she was my only friend here. A 35 yr old widow and single mother of her preschooler son, she was quite different and rough than me, yet somehow we always got along and she has been a great mentor to me.
After finishing out little chit chat we prepared and packed the food, and just then our boss Sebastian came in.
'hello ladies' he spoke in his annoyingly cheerful voice. That man didn't look like a successful entrepreneur at all. I mean berrers and a french suit? Seriously? Can't deny he was the best boss tho. Yes he made us work very hard, but repayed us with bonus too. Plus he was the most obvious gay in the entire world.
'what do you want?' i suspiciously asked raising my left eyebrow. 'you never come into the jit unless you're making us do some extra chores.'
'hahah...you guys are so funny' he waved his hand in denial. 'im not here to make my two precious chefs overwork...' he was saying, and i took a sigh of relief.
'thank god I can finally rest now.' i said to myself in my head.
'i am actually here to well...make kate overwork a little maybe' he then completed his sentence in a awkward low voice of shame and the smile on my face disappeared
'youre making her do the delivery again, aren't you?' susan scolded him, and he scratched the back of his head.
'did the delivery guy fell ill AGAIN??' I rolled my eyes. I knew I had no choice. None except me among us three could drive a food van, and our boss was such a misee he only had one driver that also fell ill almost every other day, so I obviously had to go.
'fibe give me the keys and the address.' i said in a tired tone.
'hehe ... It's over there on the table.' he indicated to the keys that were kept on a sheet of paper that looked like some ticket. And just then, my eyes fell on the letters written on the paper: TXT's 4TH WORLD TOUR BALCONIES TICKETS
I froze there for a minute as I picked it up and read it. It had my name on it. But I didn't remember buying this, i don't even remember myself talking about TXT for years now. They were my favourite boyband when I was a teenage girl. Yeonjun being my bias, i was CRAZY about him. I thought I could meet him and marry him, but then I grew up and life happened. I realised some much bigger dreams of mine. And here I am.
'Did you guys get this...for me?!?!' I asked, my voice shaking.
Sebastian smiled at me opening his arms for a hug, and susan was hardly controlling her laughter seeing me tear up over a ticket.
'well...i might have accidentally looked at your phone's notification while you were working, and I found out it was your birthday so... ' susan said with a smile.
' ...so we wanted to do something very special for our youngest yet most hardworking chef, our very own noodles fairy.' Sebastian completed Susan's statement.
'aww you guys are the best.' I said wiping my tear off as I hugged them.
' happy birthday sweetheart ' they mumbled together.
I couldn't believe I was going to TXT'S concert. I wanted to fly because today is the day I'll be seeing them in person. This is literally the best birthday day ever!!
