I had awoken early because I dreaded the meeting that was to take place in an hour. Throughout the existence of our people, we have only engaged in one war. My people are a people of peace and prosperity, never before has a meeting for war taken place. Yes I admit that we’ve conducted meetings for preparations for defense, but for a full scale attack brought shivers to my being.
My holocaller powered to life and the image of my brother in law appeared. He was dressed in regal attire and he wore a stern look about his middle-aged features.
“El-Ging, do not arrive late,” he said. I felt a pinch inside of my stomach upon hearing the sharpness in his voice. I often think about why my sister chose this man, this new president of our people to wed. He takes his role very seriously and I fear that he will grow to be a tyrant.
“I did not intend to Mr. President,” I say to the hologram. “I am about to fix breakfast and then I’ll be down.”
“You had better, we’ve much to discuss about an important matter.”
The holocaller then turned off. This important matter he wanted to discuss I knew not, but I had a dreadful feeling that it would not be a pleasant discussion. I walked downstairs and opened the curtains. The two yellow-blue suns orbiting our planet give our home a beautiful green sky with stars barely visible. My android hoovers toward me with a menu in its metallic hand.
“Good morning El-Ging, what will you have for breakfast this morning?”
“Give me racon and xggs please, and make it quickly I have important matters to attend to just now.”
“Very good sir. I must also remind you that it is time for food harvesting and that your son’s game is today at the third rotation of the second sun.”
I say nothing as I close my eyes. I had forgotten about my young son’s event and would now have to cancel a very important date with a potential wife today. She will not be pleased but a promise is a promise, I keep my promises whenever possible.
“Thank you Dria, that will be all.”
The android left the room without a word to prepare breakfast. When it finally came back, I finished my breakfast and walked out of the house. I did not say goodbye to my family for I did not wish to disturb their rest.
I stepped onto a bronze, circular board and instantly I was transported to the office of the council. I took my seat and waited as the president of our world sat in his chair. He took one glance at me as though he expected an opponent in the meeting about to take place. When other members of the council sat, he spoke.
“I called this meeting today to discuss the matter concerning our planet. As you know, we have taken great steps to ensure the regrowth of our planet’s resources but sadly we have only been able to slow the increasing decline. We must discuss other means of sustaining life on our planet which is the purpose of this meeting.”
One of the men raised his hand and the president acknowledged him.
“I have thought long and hard over this matter and sadly I’ve concluded that the only way of doing so is by means of occupation of another planet. I’ve discussed this affair with my wife and she is in agreement.”
“But your wife is not part of this council,” barked another. “Therefore her opinion is invalid.”
“Mind your tongue Felridge! Need I remind you that because of you my marriage had nearly ended!? You’re only alive because you are an important member at the table!”
“Silence!” shouted the president. “This meeting is not about whom slept with whom!”
“Correct,” came a low, morbid voice. I recognized it to be Neghel. Neghel was a man with a brooding aura about him. He gave the feeling of one not safe to be near and many others shared my feelings about this dark and reclusive being. “That’s correct. Now that we have that out of our system I’d like to bring my opinion to light. I think Felridge is correct, occupation of another planet would be the best course of action and I’ve been researching methods upon the matter. I’ve found a planet known as Earth a few light years from our own recently.”
He took a glance at the president who nodded for him to continue. My breathing began to grow heavy as I realized what he was getting at.
“I’ve learned that the Earth is abundant with resources similar to our own. The beings that inhabit it look the same as us but unfortunately they are a warlike breed.”
“Neghel,” I began, hoping to dispel the thought of war. “While I share in the opinion of occupying another planet I believe we should leave this particular one be. Searching for a planet with living resources and yet devoid of sentient beings is the best course of action.”
Neghel turned his head slightly and gave to me a glare of disappointment before he spoke once more.
“El-Ging once again you deliver a non-logical notion to the council. As you all know I am a man of study and I have studied the inhabitants of Earth.”
“What have you learned?” asked the president.
“The beings known as Humans as I’ve said, are a warlike people. I’ve learned many things that would appall many of us. For example, they continuously waste the resources of their planet to satisfy their own greed. As a result, they have damaged their protective layer which protects them from their single sun by releasing toxic gases into the air.”
Loud gasps were heard as everyone including myself shook heads in disbelief. Neghel continued.
“They have driven many of their species to extinction for their fur, bones, and other materials. One that I had grown fond of in particular was the Passenger Pigeon, a type of bird on their planet that once blotted out the sun. The humans hunted them for the meat and now there are no more.
“Hopefully we can remedy that,” someone said. “Continue.”
“Also, I have learned that for some strange reason or another, dark skinned Humans are considered inferior whilst light skinned Humans are considered to be the superior skin color. During my research I came across those who consider slanty-eyed Humans the next closest thing to a light skinned Human for breeding purposes.”
“What monstrous beings are these Humans to consider one skin color inferior to another?!” cried one who was also dark skinned. “Do they know they are equally the same!?”
“They do not and in my eyes these humans are…inadequate. Upon their planet each nation holds the power to destroy another nation, triggering what they would call a nuclear war and destroy their very planet and with it, our chance for survival as we speak. I believe if we are to survive, if our people are to live, we must occupy the planet Earth.”
“Let me speak,” I said as I stood. “Taking the lives of other sentient beings has always been against the ideals of our kind! Throughout our very existence we’ve only experienced two wars and I firmly suggest we keep it as such! The humans may indeed be warlike, but they have committed no evil acts toward us and-”
“They will soon,” Neghel interrupted. “The humans are already looking for other planets to inhabit. They’ve already landed on the planet Mars and are seeking to send more Humans to make the planet like theirs. They’ve also considered Jupiter and Venus. When they discover us they will most likely make war with us.”
Aghast murmurs ruled the room until the president silenced them again. Neghel continued
“My liege, the humans also destroy unborn children within the wombs of their females on their planet.”
“No….!” a member whispered harshly.
“Yes. The only logical explanation for this is to decrease the risk of overpopulation upon their planet, beyond that, I’ve seen no other reason for it as their planet is abundant with resources as stated previously.”
To my horror talks about such acts began to surface.
“I agree with that,” said one. “We could reduce the usage of our planet’s resources by decreasing the number of children born each year.”
“Seconded, by doing this we could replenish what was lost to us and at the same time, occupy other planets whilst sustaining life on our planet. Only those with the president’s permission may procreate.”
“That is logical,” the president said. I slowly sat back in my chair as I witnessed what was unfolding before my very eyes. “I will decree it. Starting today no woman before the fourth month of carrying may bear children unless given special permission from me. I will set the example by ordering my very own wife to end her carrying.”
At this I rose from my seat in anger. I made my anger known by bashing my hands against the table.
“Shalrig you would kill your unborn child!? Such an act makes you a coward and a monster!”
My brother-in-law didn’t even look toward me but kept his gaze on Neghel.
“The humans kill their unborn children to decrease consumption of resources and chances of overpopulation, why not us?”
“I…I agree with El-Ging.”
The woman who spoke was Nira. Being in her early thirties, she was the youngest woman appointed in the council in the existence of our people. Slowly she stood and the president’s gaze met her own.
“While the humans commit atrocious acts we should not mimic their evil actions by destroying our own children. Children are precious and should be cherished, not destroyed. I cannot agree to this global abortion, it is barbaric.”
“But the survival of our planet is paramount!” cried one. “Our resources have suffered dire declines as it is! I agree with the president only because I seek the greater good for my people.”
“As do I.”
“And I.”
“I oppose this foolish notion!”
When arguing erupted once more, the president silenced the room.
“We will vote on it another hour! Neghel continue.”
“Actually I intended to close by stating that I believe most of our resources would flourish upon Earth, after we rid it of the humans.”
“Genocide!” I shouted. “If we wage war upon the humans we will tarnish our peaceful name across the galaxy! I propose we discuss trading with the humans. Anyone capable of war is capable of trading.”
Shalrig our president finally looked towards me as did the rest of the council.
“El-Ging,” Shalrig began regrettably. “Do you honestly believe that the humans will agree to galactic trade? El-Ging the humans are mere monsters that should be destroyed.”
“They may commit heinous acts, but that gives us no right to kill them and take their planet from them! Anyone capable of war is also capable of peace. If we do this, there will be no need for the abortions you speak of nor will there be a need for war! Our hands will be clean, our name shan’t be tarnished and perhaps we could coexist with the humans on each other’s planets!”
“I refuse to live beside monsters that make war with their brethren based on skin color!”Felridge hissed, slamming his fist upon the table.“Who’s to say they wouldn’t bring such mindless behavior to our world and teach such heinous actions to our little ones!”
“Just a moment ago you expressed desire for global abortions and now you want to protect our children from humans!? Seat down in your seat again and keep silent!” I said to council member sharply.Nira took her turn to speak.
“I second the notion of coexisting. True some of the mindless humans may find their way here, but we are advanced and intelligent enough to weed them out and keep them out of our world. And as Neghel has said, perhaps some of our resources would flourish upon earth. In fact, I believe our organic resources are capable of interbreeding with theirs.”
The room fell deathly silent and I knew that our proposals were for naught.Neghel leaned into Shalrig’s ear. He nodded.
“We will make war with the humans in two months. This will give us more than enough time to prepare for occupation. By exterminating the humans we will save the earth and ourselves.”
“Shalrig!”
“Enough El-Ging! Your pacifist ways are no longer welcome here! Anyone speaking against the war will be tried for treason and killed, family or no! Do I make myself clear?!”
I said nothing. I stormed out of the meeting room and activated the transporter. I found myself back at my home with my wife waiting for me.
“How did the meeting go my love?”
No sooner had she asked this, my caller vibrated, indicating that a vote had taken place. Shalrig had passed the vile decree and now my unborn child was in danger as well as the rest of the unborn upon our planet. Then a call came through. It was Nira, the one who supported me at the meeting.
“We must find a means of escape El-Ging. I am one month carrying and my husband has been taken away for refusing to join Shalrig’s army.”
“No…not Youlik.”
“Yes. I left shortly after you did to warn him of what was about to occur and found him being arrested outside our house! What is worse is that Shalrig has decreed that those who refuse to relinquish their mates who are carrying, will be put to the sword as well as those who refuse Shalrig’s drafting. He plans to turn our planet into a planet of war and death!”
“Thank you Nira, come to my home immediately. I intend to make preparations to warn the Humans of what is coming. Hopefully my actions will also save our people.”
I hung up with her and grasped my wife tightly. She peered fearfully into mine eyes.
“El-Ging, our family!”
“Nothing shall happen to us Biara, I swear it! I’m going to send you and our son to Earth as soon as possible. I must remain behind to gather the rest of our family and try to break my sister away from Shalrig.”
“How do you know that we can survive in the Earth’s climate? They have one sun and we have two!”
“You must my love. From here I will warn the humans of the upcoming invasion so they can prepare whilst you and Gildrid live among the humans. Now get prepared.”
“But El-Ging!”
“Biara for all that is good do not argue with me! We must act quickly do as I say!”
My wife reluctantly did as she was told. As I watch her race upstairs, I silently prayed my actions would enough to save my people, my family, and the Humans.
