My friends and I had this crazy idea last week to visit the old cemetery that was supposedly haunted. People would always talk about how uncomfortable they felt or strange noises they’d heard, and yet not a single one of them had anything more to say. No photos, videos, or more detailed stories to tell. This of course made my friends and me want to investigate this place and find out for ourselves.
We didn’t really plan as well as we should have. Each of us took flashlights, phones, and money since this would be a very long car ride to take.
Driving there was pretty interesting, as we saw ourselves leaving our comfortable lives in the suburbs and entering the much more mysterious countryside. Houses were much smaller and many appeared to be run-down. Big named store chains slowly disappeared as local restaurants and stores became more commonplace.
At this point in our trip the sun had started to go down and night was creeping in. We all joked with each other about the creepy ghosts we’d be seeing. None of us really expected much more than maybe an eerie shadow at best.
It wasn’t that much longer before we finally reached the place and what we saw was a bit disappointing. There were only about ten tombstones places in a tiny patch of land. This wasn’t exactly what we expected to see for a place that had been the source of so many rumors.
For a while we just sort of awkwardly stood around and pulled out our phones. There was no way we were going back after driving for so long. Each of us split up to investigate different parts of the area. I chose to head north where there the trees surrounding the cemetery weren’t as thick.
I pulled out my flashlight and walked casually through the trees. The silent atmosphere was certainly eerie, but it wasn’t the sort of creepy I’d been hoping for. I could hear my friends talking to each other as they also went looking for something interesting.
Sometime during the walk I lost track of time. At least I think I did because all of a sudden nothing became familiar. The numerous trees that had been surrounding me before were now spread out more. On top of that my friends could no longer be heard. I tried thinking to myself how I’d become so absent-minded. It wasn’t like a lot of time had passed, or so I thought.
All my thoughts were quickly silenced when I came across the only sign of civilization within the forest. Out in the open was a poorly made shack that looked like it’d been there for years. I could see the wood splinters sticking out from where I stood and parts of the walls that had fallen off. Obviously I was a bit spooked by the sighting of this place. However, this was so far the only remotely exciting thing I’d found and marched right towards it with my phone out.
The inside of the shack was just as miserable to look at as the outside. It was a single room with a moldy rug on the floor and dirty looking tables against the walls. There was something more, but I couldn’t see because of how dark it was. As I pointed my flashlight in other directions I quickly found myself growing uneasier than before.
All across the walls were drawing of people holding hands. Each of them had a name attached to them. They were all wearing different clothes and differed in appearance. As I shined my flashlight further towards the ceiling I found something else that made me shiver. Painted on the ceilings were the words, “It watches us.” Next to the words was a pair of giant eyes looking straight down at me. I was so startled by what I saw that I actually dropped my phone, accidentally breaking the thing.
I’d seen just about all I would want to see and bolted out the door. While running outside my eye caught something interesting. One of the people painted on the wall had nobody by their side. Its hand was raised at its side and open, as if inviting someone to join them.
After leaving I ran all the way back the way I came where I found my friends standing beside the tombstones. Talking to them were a pair of police officers. My already high anxiety rose at the sight of the officers. Had something happened while I was gone?
My friends were started by my appearance. They had apparently tried calling me without any success. Unfortunately for them my phone had been broken when they called. That wasn’t why the police were there though.
They told us that there’d been reports of missing people in the forest. Apparently a cult had formed within the forest. Nobody really knew what they were about, but suspicious had been raised about them being connected to kidnappings. Immediately I told them all about the shack I’d found and let them to it.
Everybody had more or less the same reaction that I did, excluding the dropping of their phones. The place was definitely creepy, and it only became even more so as the police identified some of the names as people that had been missing.
While we investigated one of my friends found his food stuck in one of the floorboards. The police swiftly reacted and pulled him out. As soon as my friend’s foot came out something beneath the floorboard revealed itself: A decaying face. I felt my stomach turn at the mere sight of this thing. Parts of its skin had turned a sickly yellow while its greasy looking black hair remained attached to its head. The police pulled up the rest of the floorboards and found the corpse wearing the same clothes as the picture drawn on the wall above it.
My friends and I were told to leave immediately by the police as they called for more officers. We left that night not knowing exactly what to think about the situation. It was all so sudden and so much at the same time. We simply stayed silent the rest of the way home, lost in our thoughts.
