The evening, I heard of her existence I was sure that I had to see her at that moment to be sure, Roy had brought me pictures and various information from public records but only I would truly know.
Seeing her brought back so many memories over the centuries that I had cherished with her. It was December and there she was, leaning over one of the seven textbooks she had stacked beside her. She was exhausted but continued on even after her third cup of coffee not looking up from her page for a second. Her flesh was still pure with no signs of surgery or tattoos, everything had to be perfect, it would be perfect.
Feeling the need to breath her in I entered the little coffee shop and sat far away from her but not before walking past. She shivered but didn't look up, she smelled exactly the way I remembered her. I froze as I tried to calm myself, to keep myself from dragging her away from this world and back in to mine.
A short while later a man entered the coffee shop and walked over sitting with her, I could easily hear their conversation from the other side of the shop. This was Jack and from the pounding of Jacks heart he was just as excited to be around her as I was. Ayana was barely paying any attention to his words which made me smile slightly. She wasn't committed to this relationship like he was, but I could help with that, I could give her the push that she needed. Her education would be no matter, after all I was walking history and in time she would too.
It was dark outside now and all I could see was a few inches of snow now covering the ground. I left the shop keeping that image of her forever burned into my mind. She was alive, healthy, and waiting for me after all this time. My driver took me a few blocks away to her apartment where I let myself in. Her little dog Theo had come out of nowhere barking madly and trying to attack me where I stood. "Stop." He immediately stopped barking and turned away walking back to his bed.
Her studio apartment was cozy, more books littered her coffee table and right there in the middle of the clutter was a letter from Jack no doubt. I could tell from the smell of old spice and cheap cologne he had been here briefly. The letter confessed his feelings for her and tucked in the corner of the envelope was a ring. "Absolutely not." The little note caught fire in my hand until it was just a pile of ashes that needed to be dusted into the trash.
As I entered her bedroom, I took my suit jacket and shoes off climbing into her bed burying my face in her pillow, almost feeling her presence next to me. The front door opened, and I could hear Ayana's voice as she called for her precious Theo. Instead, I met her at the bedroom door, she screamed dropping her bags. "Stop." Mid scream she fell silent, and her face relaxed.
It was her, how else would my powers work so effortlessly on her? "Will you sit with me?" I gestured towards the bed as she nodded silently and sat down. The fear in her wasn't gone just calm for a little while. "You don't know me, not yet anyways but you will I just wanted to formally introduce myself to you and apologize for the things that I have to do." She just stared at me her lips parting slightly wanting to ask questions.
"But- Who are you? What do you have to do? Please don't hurt my dog." I couldn't help but smile slightly at the mention of her animal.
"I'm not going to hurt Theo or you my love I only want to bring us together. I promise you that it is very easy to love me, to please me, you won't be miserable this time, I'll pay more attention this time." She was confused and I couldn't blame her, unleashing all this onto her before she could even enjoy her career.
"You're going to forget about this Ayana, but I am anticipating you coming home in the next two weeks." She nodded seemingly accepting her fate, but I knew she'd forget about this conversation when she awoke in the morning. Forget that the worst night of her life was only weeks away.
After putting her to bed and taking the remnants of the ashes from earlier I left her apartment exiting through a back ally where a car was waiting for me. The driver held the door for me as I climbed inside greeted by a younger blonde woman. "Maddie, I presume?" She held her hand out to me smiling widely as the car pulled off.
We were outside a bar where Jack was waiting anxiously checking his phone and looking around. Maddie left the car walking up to Jack and just like that I had solved Ayana's problem. "To the airport Roy, we have things to do."
