I held onto her hand as hard as I could, I wasn't going to let her see me die, and certainly not over the ocean where there would be no body to bury. But then I saw the little trickle of soil by her feet. "G-Gillian..."
"Shush. I'm going to get you out of here, if it's the last thing I do!"
I knew that wouldn't happen. She was losing her grip with the ground, and I was the one pulling her away. Either I was going to die, or we both were. "Gillian. Let me go."
She looked at me like I had lost my mind. "What?! No! I'm not joining that pack of murderers I used to call my family in staining my hands with your blood!"
"I'm not asking you to. I'm asking you to save yourself."
My calm tone only made her more frantic. "No! I love you..."
"And I love you. Which is why I'm so sorry, but I have to do this. Goodbye, Gillian."
And I let go. I was suspended in the air, one second, two, and then Gillian jumped off. "If you're going to die, I'm coming with you."
Tears pricked my eyes. There was no way I was going to live, I saw that from the beginning. But Gillian was given the chance to live and forfeited it...for me. "I love you," I said.
"I love you too," she responded, and we kissed as we hit the water.
Neither of us could find the surface, but we didn't care. We kissed and played with each other's hair until we got dizzy, and then we kissed some more. The last thing I felt was her warm, sweet lips on mine before my vision darkened and I blacked out, leaving the water free passage into my lungs to drown me and Gillian, two star-crossed lovers who got their moment just as they got their end.
