There are many definitions for what a writer is. A writer is someone who makes a point to write every day, a writer pushes through their writer's block to get things done, a writer is someone with a story to tell, a writer is simply someone who loves to write and does on their own time.
Which one is the write-uhh...right one?
Well, it's not as simple as that. Because all of these definitions come from writers themselves, and they make sure that they fit into the category they made for themselves. But a writer who writes everyday and makes a living off of it is not going to be the same as the shy writer who does it for his/her/theirself, and likewise that writer isn't going to fit completely in the circle with the writer who writes to get word out about an issue near and dear to them.
And then we have genres, both fiction and non-fiction. A poet or song writer is not the same thing as a realistic fiction author, and yet we consider both people writers. There are so many definitions and labels out there, it's really hard to actually define an entire group of people under such a broad term with such different views on a subject.
And what do outsiders consider writers to be anyway? Published authors? There are plenty of little kids who write for fun to try and be a writer like their heroes, are we saying their stories are not valid? And what about fanfiction? Are we excluding a huge genre just because it isn't what we see as conventional? Before you can even take a writer's advice or standards, you have to determine your own standards for who you consider a writer.
The fact is, no matter what standards you have for a writer, chances are you're going to miss a demographic or two in the generalization. Everyone writes, whether it's an e-mail or a school assignment, an article or a novel. What is a writer? A writer is anyone who simply views themselves that way, no matter how much they've written, or what they write for. If you say you are a writer, then you are a writer.
