What happened to our people all those years ago? Why are we confined to these space stations? Who are we? These are all questions I am often asked. The truth is that those questions are so old that even the answers have been lost to the passage of time. We only have written accounts by the people that escaped the tragedy a millennia ago.
According to the records, there were a series of events caused by an unexplained phenomenon. Planets across the galaxy began reporting unusual volcanic activity. The ash dispersed from the eruptions created a layer within a planets atmosphere. This layer of ash stopped sunlight from reaching a planets surface and blocked any form of communication from reaching other planets or systems. On colonized planets, the layer of ash would disrupt electronics, thus halting any attempt to evacuate, and within hours suffocate the planets entire population.
Mankind's extinction was all but certain until the emergence of Arc ships from Project Salvation. The project was started shortly after the discovery of the alien spacecraft in 1969 in case if mankind was ever thrown into a war with an alien species and was on the verge of extinction.
The date was 21st December 2012, otherwise known to our people as Judgement day.
The world was descending into chaos. Mankind had been cut off from all of it's colonies, leaving Earth alone against it's oncoming annihilation. The sky began to darken as the ash was spreading across the globe. Riots and mass panic enveloped the streets of every major city across the world as millions tried to escape the disaster. There were a total of ten Arc ships across the globe, each with only enough room to fit ten thousand people aboard. The problem was the total population back then was 8 billion. of course important dignitaries and people who could pay were able to board first, This left little room for other people trying to board.
As each Arc ship took off, the ash had enveloped most of the world that multiple Arc ships had lost power causing them to crash back to the surface killing all the people aboard and countless people below. A total of 3 ships were able to escape just in time to make a jump through slip-space, while the remaining population suffocated to death due to the ash or burn't from the magma from the volcano.
Around 7.7 billion people perished that day and grand total of 46 quadrillion people across the galaxy lost their lives.
The tragedy to this day would forever be known to us as The Cleansing.
