I don't believe in ghouls or ghosts or being afraid of the things that go bump in the night. Well, in a way I do, but I don't believe that those things are material and existing in the way most people do.
I believe that we project our shadows onto the world. Those creatures we fear are what we see in ourselves. That's the truly terrifying thing about humans. We are the the truly scary monsters in this world. All of our darkest, most terrible desires are reflected out into the real world, twisted into a monster in our closet. The thoughts that coil inside our minds at night give birth to the terror lurking under all of our beds.
The monster, our enemy, our greatest foe. It's us. Everyone is scared of something. I, myself, am terrified of anything that fits into the concept of the Uncanny Valley. Humanoid looking things that are just a bit off. Not right. And that is because those humanoid things might be what the dark side of us looks like. At least, that's how I think of it.
We don't fight horrible beasts. We fight our own minds. Have you ever stood at the top of a high building and looked down and realized that you could just leap off? That you have control of whether you live or die? I've had moments where that's occurred to me. It's terrifying. And exhilarating. I fight that side of me every day. Everyone at some point is tempted to give in to whatever darkness seduces us, but we fight for the freedom to be free from that side of us. And usually we win. Sometimes, people give in.603Please respect copyright.PENANAEt0vDa2ub1
I bet if I were to list of some random people that gave in to that urge, you might recognize some names. Jeffrey Dahmer. John Wilkes Booth. Jack the Ripper. Ted Bundy. John Wayne Gacy. Adolf Hitler. Attila the Hun. Elizabeth Bathory. These people are what we should be afraid of, the true monsters. Humans are wholly and truly terrifying. We have so much intelligence, but some people use that knowledge to do nothing but maim society. They leave scars on all of our memories. We might be fascinated with the gruesome, and we may create stories of inhuman monsters, but every legend must have a basis in fact. And here, with these psychotic monsters that are barely human by moral standards, is where the origins for those stories take root.
I love studying the morbid and grotesque, and I love writing about such things as well. But I know enough to understand that what I see in history is truly disturbed and chilling. A while back I was looking into the Black Dahlia case. For those of you that haven't heard of this case, a young woman's body, that of Elizabeth Short, was found in a park in Los Angeles, her body cut in half and drained of blood. The murderer had also given her a Glasgow grin, or Chelsea smile, where the corners of the mouth are carved into a smile. The killer was never caught, and the case was never solved. This case, the Zodiac Killer, and Jack the Ripper were what caught my attention. Soon I was deep in the world of murderers, neurological disorders, and the horrendous history of murderers. It made me sick, yet I was still enticed by the fact that someone could be so incredibly twisted and feel no remorse for what they had done. Around this time was when I truly became afraid of humans. Not all humans are as severely dark and psychotic as these, but I believe we all have a part of us that can, if fed, turn into a monster. People aren't born murdering. They grow and change into monsters. They start small, torturing animals, manipulating people, and as they grow, the behavior becomes more and more severe, until one day... they snap and become the truly horrible monster that was lurking just beneath the surface.
So don't be afraid of ghosts, ghouls, and urban legends of fright. Be afraid of what humans are capable of. We are the true monsters. Look down, and be afraid of what we are. That we share the same species and genus as some of the causes for the most horrifying events. Look up and believe that we have all been monsters at some point. But we, as the human race, can work to become better and to suppress that monster.
A/N: SO MUCH WORD VOMIT. Okay, apologies for the boring rambling of this. As you can see, I have an incredibly messed up mind. This is the stuff I think about on a day-to-day basis. Yeah. Fun. Anyway, hope you enjoyed. Or were unsettled by my wackadoodle ideas. Thanks for the support lovelies!603Please respect copyright.PENANAu9SlI1Spm3
