The rain hammers down, muffling slightly the roar of the guns.

My back against the wall,

The mud thickening slowly under my feet.

I shiver, months of fear and cold leading to this moment.

And still the rain hammers down.

I know tomorrow, I will be out there,

Running into the mouths of the guns,

Just another dead man torn to pieces.

Maybe they won't even know my name.

And still the rain hammers down.

Who will miss me? Will my title be up on a plaque somewhere,

Etches on metal the only part of me left?

Everything that made me a person,

I am staring into the sky,

as clouds of smoke rise above the piles of earth that protected us,

Kept us alive for so long,

The hail of explosions creating billows of a strangely beautiful ash.

How can war ever be beautiful when we know exactly what it means?

It means death and we all know it.

And still the rain hammers down.

My mind wanders, and I allow myself to close my eyes.

I pray I will never have to wake up,

To wake just to be cut down.

We are 'the final stand'.

But we will not stand much longer.

And still, the rain
