Tern eyed the large red dragon warily, her muscles clenched. Her oddly coloured wings were lifted, even though she couldn't fly yet, and her scales burned hot. The old SkyWing glared at her through golden eyes with disgust, the same kind of disgust the white dragon who gave her to the red one wore whenever he remembered her presence. She'd been told enough times what she was. An abomination, an anomaly, a hybrid discrace with weird flame/ice scales to boot. She shivered, remembering the frigid Ice Kingdom where she used to live, before the white one carried her here in a sack and dumped her in this cave. Her twitching tail brushed against a tall strand of hay, which burned away instantly. She jumped backwards and her firescales simply vanished, her blue eye suddenly glowing brighter than the red one. She sighed. The SkyWing noticed the sudden drop of temperature and frost spread from the small Sky/Icewing's talons. Tern sighed again and lay down in the spreading pattern of ice. The SkyWing observed her for a minute and ignited a pile of wood in the corner with a huff of flame and turned away, watching the crackling fire. Tern suddenly said quietly, "Who are you? Where is the big white one?"

"Silence, dragonet."

Tern was quiet for a few minutes, watching the red SkyWing intently.

"My name is Tern.." she said softly.

"Kite."

"Oh."

"The Icewing who placed you here doesn't want you anymore. He's gone home."

"Oh."

"Silence."

Tern curled up and tried to sleep. Her icescales, sticky from the heat of the fire, switched to firescales again. Her eyes flashed open, her right eye suddenly burning red again. She sighed and drifted off to sleep, resigned to her new life.
