We sat comfortably, Jane and I. Our legs dangled over the side of the bridge, nothing but sweet, precious nothing on our minds. Jane was ginger blonde with golden honey eyes and delicate features that made every guy compete for her attention. She hated that attention though.
I on the other hand was just a plain average person. Or at least as average and plain as a human turned shapeshifter can be. I was gifted with slate grey eyes, pale skin, and black as night hair. My features are so average that I'm not even gonna bother boring you with those details.
So, basically, we were sitting there on that bridge, the Summer air twirling our hair and tickling our skin, when Hollen and West showed up.
Seeing them from the corner of my eye, I lightly bumped Jane with my knee and bent my head down so my hair would cover my face. I focused on trying to make myself unnoticeable, but my efforts failed the minute West snuck up behind me and said, "Oi, Kestin,"
I looked over my shoulder at him. "What?"
"Could you move over?"
I arched my eyebrow at this. West always forgot common courtesy and politeness.
West rolled his eyes and grudgingly replied, "Please. Could you move over, please."
I moved over.
It was common knowledge that West had it pretty bad for Jane, and having this knowledge, made Jane prickly around him. I watched as her shoulders tensed ever so slightly when he sat down next to her. I didn't like West very much to be honest.
After a while, when West couldn't get anything out of her, he decided to just "casually" put his arm around her shoulders. This made Jane tense even more.
I almost decided to change into a mountain lion or a cheetah and scratch his eyes and arm off. Underline almost. Now please, don't think I'm some creepy over protective friend or anything. I just know how much Jane dislikes West and how his attention makes her want to, well, puke.
Luckily, as I was seriously beginning to consider actually attacking him, Hollen spoke up and whispered, "Dude, don't you have lacrosse practice right now? It's 3:40."
Wide eyed, West scrambled up, hurriedly said goodbye to Jane, and then took off yelling, "Why didn't you mention it sooner?! Dynsten is gonna kill me!"
I felt Jane's and mine's unease melt off. Meanwhile, Hollen just stood there and stared after his friend with a look that said 'what am I? Your mother?'
It made me laugh. Which made both Hollen and Jane look at me. Jane with an amused expression, and Hollen with a surprised, concerned look in his eyes.
"I've never heard you laugh before." Hollen bluntly stated.
I coughed awkwardly.
"It's a nice sound." He followed up.
Unfazed I asked, "What? My cough?"
"No, your laugh."
"Oh. Thanks, I guess." I replied.
Jane slowly stood up, giving a little sigh. "I'm afraid I have to go, my mom wants me home to help her bake her cake for the charity club thing..."
I nodded understandingly and she smiled, waving as she walked off.
"Text you later, Kestin!" She said.
I smiled at her retreating form.
"So. I have 10 bucks, wanna grab a Cola or something?" I spun around to find Hollen still standing there on the bridge behind me.
"Don't you have somewhere to be or something?" I asked him.
"Nope."
"Oh." I replied.
"Oh as in cool but I'll be going home or Oh as in sure I'd love some ice cold Cola ?"
"Oh as in I'd love to grab some Cola."
"Wonderful!" He declared before offering me a handsome smile and whisking me off down into town.
And that's how it all started. Hollen and I that is. He finds me to be anything but average and plain and, I can happily say, knows and accepts that I'm a weird shapeshifting weirdo. >_^
