The Quarantine Comparison
What a blessed time quarantine is to bring out our angst. It is pretty obvious that people would go back to doing something that they have been doing consciously and unconsciously for a while now. With all the changes and tons of new stuff to drink in it is quite natural for us to try to cope with things we are familiar with.
But one such trend that is quite rising up the ranks is ‘comparison’. With three generations at home and dear Whatsapp to picture every single moment of your life. We were not warned properly of these days. Every single thing you do is shared with or without your permission. Messages like ‘my kids woke up at 7 here is a picture of them’. ‘My daughter doesn’t wake till half past twelve’. ‘My darling son wakes at five and does all the house work’ are the only messages being posted in other wise very dead Whatsapp groups. If you aren’t a victim to this consider yourself lucky. Strike that very lucky.
What unites us young adults during this time of isolation is none other than this ‘Competition’. What resulted in your boredom and a stroke of inspiration is being used by your family members to show case how good their upbringing is. What should be fun and innovative is being turned into a battle between you and your cousins. There are mentions of people you have never heard before and pictures of their cooked dishes and paintings are being shown. There are also some who do the work themselves and then easily convince that, that was done by their children.
That’s how much pressure we are surviving in. If you are feeling stings of sudden pain along your body it is because of this pressure to be perfect. To shine among the others and to prove that you can do more. And who are these others? The kids you grew up playing with, the ones you built pillow forts with and scaled trees and shared secrets.
At times it feels as if no matter what you do you will never be able to reach those expectations. And if you did then you deserve it. If you like me feel that you are being violated and used and that your innovations are going to waste then don’t worry. We are not alone.
Wishing happiness and good health
Until next time that is if I survive the pressure.
