Chapter 1

Fire rains from the sky. Supernovas rain down in sulphur and poison gas. From the flames emerges a soul once assumed to be lost. The seal is broken, releasing the beginning of the end. The Sins ravage the world, killing everything that breathes. In their path lie corpses and hellfire, bringing damnation to the world above. The wielders of white magic, The Druids try desperately to stop the Sins, but to no avail. It was only she who could have stopped him, but she too was among the casualties. Her name erased from history, and those who knew it rendered unable to speak it. Suddenly, a bright light., The death,— no,— the birth of a star. He who cannot be named descended unto the mortal plane to banish his son's usurper once and forever, returning balance to the world. He breathed life back into the earth and the stars. He went to sleep, and has slumbered since.

"Shit, I'm late for school." I said.
257Please respect copyright.PENANAliLPGJj3bX
It wasn't the only time I'd be late that year. My nightmares had been progressively getting worse until a point when I could barely sleep anymore. Whenever I told Andrew about it, he'd either brush it off or give me some dumb excuse.

I wasn't your stereotypical, perfect teenager. My eyes were black, I had scruffy hair and I was overweight. No "dazzling blue eyes" or "chiselled abs" or "sculpted jawline". Plain old boring little me. The only thing I had going for me was my height, which (unlike Tall Girl) I treasured.

A black sign, the phrase "A-1" etched into its silicone front. "Good, I'm at the right place," I thought. I twisted the door handle, letting the warm air hit my face. The temperature inside was drastically different from the biting cold outside. That's just fall for you, I suppose.

Most people had already settled down and were awaiting our teacher's instructions. Nobody liked him since he taught math and gave a shit-ton of homework. However, we all needed the credit from his classes. Most students had begun pairing up for the year.

"Grant, you will be partnered with Gabriel. You two should keep working together for the rest of the year. I would tell you it's for valuable experiences but I know you want extra credit," Mr Lorenz Wolfe said. Though he had lived in Germany is whole life, his accent was barely traceable.

My heart jumped when I heard his name. On the opposite side of class, he smiled at me. Oof! That smile, that pearl white smile. Gabe was everything that I wanted to be. He was literally Adonis. Perfect tan skin, perfect smile, the cutest nose, and hair that smelled like watermelon bubblegum. Not that I occasionally smell his hair, who does that? Oh and I forgot to mention, I'm gay. Very gay. Like, 100% gay.

I picked my stuff up and walked over to his desk, trying my hardest not to smile like an idiot. "Hi!" He said.

"Hey," I replied coolly. Shit, was I too cold? Does he think I'm mean now? Why am I so bad at this?!

"Gabriel, Grant, Jamie here doesn't have anyone to pair up with. Would you mind if he joined your group?" Mr Wolfe said.
257Please respect copyright.PENANAI3doaCkWGK
Of course, I fucking mind. Jamie is a narcissistic, selfish piece of shit. And also my ex.

"No, we don't mind," Gabe said. I flashed a pained smile as Mr Wolfe sauntered away, acting like he just won best teacher award. Jamie, who ruins everything all the time.

"Okay guys, where do we start?" Jamie said. I wanted to choke him so badly, but apparently the bible says no.

"Well, since the decathlon is coming up, I thought we could put forward our individual problems and solve them," I pitched. Jamie seemed alright with it, not that I cared, and Gabe nodded.

Instead of spending most of the time working, Gabe and I decided to talk about people that we didn't like, but he seemed uncomfortable about it. Being the good person he is, he tried to rope Jamie into the conversation. He seemed distracted and far away.

Nothing much happened from then on. I heard a group say that it would be unfair to compete with us since there were three of us. Mr Wolfe told them that they'd just have to put in some extra effort if they wanted to win.

"Okay guys, time's up, be on your way." Mr Wolfe instructed. Dreary students pushed back their desks and chairs, making them screech against the tiled floor. Thank God, the lesson felt like it lasted forever.

Ah, wasn't that a wonderful school day. Other than the fact that I had teamed up with my ex and we had to work together the day after, it was fine. The sun tinged the sky beautiful shades of pink and orange, making me feel as if I lived in my own mini-paradise. I wanted time to stay perfectly still as I soaked in its magnificence, but I didn't have superpowers so how could I stop time? Right?

By the time I got back home, Andrew was back from wherever he had been. "Hey little bro, how was your first day?" he asked, turning down the volume on the tv. My elder brother and only sibling had very few things in common with me. He was perfect, so perfect that it was annoying. Outgoing, loveable, respectful. Even blue fucking eyes. The only thing we shared was a family name and a home.

"It went alright," I replied, dropping my school bag on the ground and heading into the kitchen.

"Your seventeenth was a few days ago, so why not deliver on my promise?" He told me. I glanced at him as I opened the fridge and took out a soda. At that point, I didn't even think I cared enough to pay attention.

The promise he was talking about was one he had made to me a decade before. The kids at school didn't want to play with me because I "didn't have a mommy or a daddy". Of course, I was heartbroken and went home wondering why I had never thought about it.

When I asked Andrew, he promised that he'd tell me when I turned seventeen. For the first 6 or so years, I wouldn't stop bothering him about it. I'd remind him constantly, write in my diary about it, write songs and poems and.. Basically, I cared a lot.

"Grant, get over here." Andrew requested. Begrudgingly, I obliged, plopping down onto the unnaturally comfortable seat cushions.

"Our family history is complicated. But I made a promise. Take a breath, brace yourself for what you're about to hear," he said. I would have laughed but the look he gave me said he wasn't joking.

"Your father is the King of Hell, and a Seven Deadly Sin, Diadromes." He said. "Hmm, and I'm guessing that my

mother was one of Lucifer's concubines stolen by Diadromes himself." I jested. He glared at me, but I kept running my mouth.

"Oh come on, the Sin of Wrath? If his anime depiction is accurate it wouldn't be that hard to take him down, would it?" I asked him. Clearly, I had pushed all the wrong buttons.

"Will you just shut your mouth for once in your misbegotten life? If only you knew where you came from, maybe you would swallow your pride and do what you're told!" He yelled.

A void-like silence snaked it's way between us, leaving so much to be said. "You were born on the night of the first apocalypse, 2000 years ago. You were encased in an Ageless spell by our uncle, who wanted me to train thoroughly before I gave you a chance to live in this world. Only seventeen years ago did I unbind the spell and give you breath once more," He said,

My head began to hurt, and I looked away from him, turning over all the things he said to me in my mind.
257Please respect copyright.PENANAHVuiEMvvna
"Grant, look at me, our mom died to give birth to you. Our relatives died trying to keep you safe! Your destiny is to prevent another apocalypse from being started. That means killing off Lucifer and his rogue band of angels once and for all." He emphasised.

"Who was our mother?" I asked, my voice hitching, but I dared not look at him.

"Her name was..." his mouth sealed shut just as she was about to say her name. "She was the Proavus. Created to restore balance to the world." He said. Since I had caused him enough grief for the night, I decided to make it slightly easier for him.

After an elongated sigh, I said, "Where do I sign?" Warmth flickered across his face but it was instantly replaced with authority. "Good."

I retreated to my room, instantly going on my phone and trying to forget what happened. As I scrolled through twitter, a colourful banner caught my eye.
