Smile Bin Xin
As the sound of rain gradually faded, shades of light glimmered through the window curtains. I opened the window. Ah! The breezing clouds were gone and the raindrops that were still clinging to the leaves glistered under the moonlight like a thousand fireflies. Who would have thought that such a beautiful and tranquil piece of work would appear after a depressing shower of rain in this lonely night.
I stood by the window for a brief moment, and then chilliness started to sink in. I turned around and all of a sudden, everything started to spin. All the things in the house were cloaked by layers of shimmering clouds, except the painting of an angel hanging on the wall, glowing dimly among the others. This angel in white was holding flowers with her wings unfolded and smiling at me.
“This smile, I have seen it before but where? When did I…”
I sat under the window without realizing, as my head was wrapped in thoughts... and lost in them.
The sealed curtains in my heart slowly unveiled and a vague image from five years ago flooded – a long and old road. The mud was still slippery as the donkey treaded; the water in the field’s ditches was trickling by; the trees of the nearby village so green were clouded by mist with a crescent moon hanging above the crowns. As I walked along, I thought I saw a child by the side of the road, holding a bunch of things that are shining white. The donkey had already passed by, I looked by unintentionally – he was holding flowers in bare foot, smiling at me.
“This smile too, I have seen it before!” Thoughts continued to swirl... and I remained lost.
Another sealed curtain surfaced, it too, unveiled slowly, and a vague image from ten years ago flooded – raindrops dripped from the thatch onto my clothes. The tiny water bubbles by the earthen stairs were whirling all over the place; the wheat trail and grape rack in front of the door were both gleaming in vivid yellow and green, so colourful and beautiful. – After a while, the rain finally stopped, I hurried down the slope and saw the moon rising from the surface of the sea before me. Right then, I suddenly realized that I had left something behind. Immediately, I paused and looked back. The old lady inside the thatched cottage – she was leaning on the door, holding flowers, smiling at me.
At this moment, my mind was clear and peaceful, as if I had entered the higher realm or that I was back in hometown. For a short period of time, the three smiles before my eyes had become indistinguishable as they melted in love as one.
