Two hundred thousand years ago

The human race began to grow.

And as we took our first few steps,

We likely looked around perplexed

At planet earth, at all its splendours,

And of course its many dangers.

Humankind must have convened

To wonder what it all could mean.

"What is that great big ball of light?"

"Why does it disappear at night?"

"Why did that mountain just explode?"

"What makes the ground quake and erode?"

"What was that rumble in the sky?"

"What happens to us when we die?"

"All of this is quite unclear,

And how did we even get here?"

Of these countless strange events

We tried our best to make some sense.

From curiosity and fear

Religion, finally, was reared:

An early, naive explanation

To try and understand creation.

One faith though, was not enough,

It wasn't long 'til more sprang up.

Throughout the many centuries,

There have been countless deities.

Osiris, Odin, Zeus, Thor

And likely many thousands more,

Who's names have since been lost to time,

forgotten now by humankind.

Each made earth in their own way,

Each with rules you must obey.

And now we come to modern day,

Where some faiths still won't go away;

Still preaching orders as demented,

As the fables they invented.

Subject kids to circumcision.

Don't have sex in that position.

You can't eat pork, you can't be gay,

Sit facing east five times a day.

And if these rules you disobey,

Or question any single way;

Should you dare renounce your faith,

Or convert to another's grace;

If you think of your own free will,

Or think or feel what God deems ill:

Faith has a special place for you,

Where postmortem you're cast into.

This firey place, says certain sources,

Reeks of rotting, burning corpses.

Here you're punished for the crime

Of sinning 'til the end of time.

While high above, through pearly gates,

Those that receive the Lord's embrace,

Will laugh at all this misery,

To try and pass eternity.

Now all of that is quite untrue.

But tell it to a child, who,

With boundless imagination,

Is scared to indoctrination.

Reinforce it over time,

And they'll stay perfectly in line.

So even when they're old and grey,

They still won't dare to disobey.

No matter what good they came from,

Religions have now all become,

Outdated stories, rules and ethics,

Kept alive by fears and relics.

A convenient expedient,

To keep people obedient.

It strangles independent thought.

It inspires hatred, violence, war.

It's caused so much unneeded crime,

The biggest killer of all time.

Any good deed done in it's name

Could, by sceptics, be done the same.

Yet no freethinker could achieve,

Such vast amounts of misery.
