Storm pulled up to the parking lot. She had an interview for the Mission Polus. A little background check to make sure she was fit for the job.
As she walked into MIRA (the company that runs the missions) her stomach felt a little queasy. Would she really qualify for the mission? Most of her friends had applied and few passed the physical exam. All they had to do was get interviewed too. MIRA was very strict about the perfect candidate.
Storm walked to what looked like a help station. She tapped the screen of the station. Instantly it lit up.
"Hello and welcome to Moora International Research Atmosphere or MIRA for short. How may I help you?" A robotic voice chirped.
Storm swallowed. "I am here for the Mission Polus interview. Where is the meeting taking place?"
The machine beeped. "Please put your hand on the designated area for ID check."
Storm put her hand on the screen and waited. A few more minutes and she might be late.
The voice finally spoke. "Mission Polus Background Check starts in five minutes, third floor, door 56. On your right."
"Thanks."
"Happy to help. Good luck."
Storm hurried her way towards the elevator. She willed the elevator to be quick. Every second counted.
She ran out of the elevator, running to the right, her eyes searching the door numbers. At last, even though it was only a few seconds, it felt like eternity.
Storm straightened up, smoothed her hair that fell out of her hoodie, and walked in. Five pairs of eyes looked her way. As she took a sit near the door in a comfortable looking chair, she scanned the room.
Each person was quite different. Or at least, she thought 'person'. Two looked like they were dressing up as vegetables. Both had a stem and leaf sitting on top of their heads.
But who was she to judge? After all, Storm had some weird quirks too. She had wolf-like ears and tail. The reason nobody really noticed her was because Storm wore hoodies a lot. And she usually hides her tail in her pants or if the hoodie were long enough, she would just tuck it underneath.
She sighed, memories flooding in from the scientists lab. They had ruined her life by making her a freak.
After what felt like forever, another door creaked.
A head poked out. "Storm?"
Relief shot through Storm. "Here."
The person opened the door wider. "We're waiting for you."
Storm walked into the room. There, sat another person. This woman had her eyes glued to her Apple computer.
As Storm sat down, the woman looked up. "Storm?"
"Yes." Storm smiled.
"Mk, all we're doing is going to ask you some questions."
"Okay."
She cleared her throat. "Let's start. Where are you from?"
"Grimshaw, Canada."
"DOB?"
"6/16/1999" Storm smiled to herself. It wasn't her actual DOB but it didn't really matter.
"Your day job is a mechanic, right?"
"Yes ma'am. I have a knack for electronics."
"Did all tests and insurance forms?"
"Yep."
"It says here that you have been inhumanly experimented on in the past. Any side affects?"
Storm sighed on the inside. "It's nothing, really. My health is great but my physical appearance changed a bit. Look."
Storm took off the purple hood of her sweater, revealing some furry, brown ears at the top of her head.
The woman stared a bit and averted her eyes back to the screen. "That's.. interesting. But we have had weirder looks in past interviews."
She filed some papers out from a shelf. "This is the remaining questionnaires that you must fill out." She took out a pen. "Take these, and go back to the waiting room. Once you are finished, wait until we are done with the rest of the people."
"Okay." Storm thought this didn't sound too hard. She placed the hood over her ears again and took the papers and pen.
She walked out of the room and settled back into the comfy chair.
The questions really did pass her time. Once Storm was finished, she realized everyone was filling out similar papers.
She shuffled back to the question room, and handed over her papers and pen.
The lady took them and placed them neatly on the shelves of the white room. "Thanks. And have a nice day."
"You too." Storm mumbled.
She went outside and got into her car. She wondered if she'll ever get in..
