It was a hot summer day. The birds were chirping as usual. As you proceed with your long journey you enjoy the beautiful scenery of the forest. You wore a dark blue hakama, the traditional outfit of a samurai. As you walked a small path deep into the bamboo forest you could hear the crickets chirping. Your faithful sword was always by your side. You would be a fool in this time of age to walk around without one. You didn’t know how long you've been walking but to you it felt like days. You were glad that at least you were wearing your favorite takuhatsugasa hat. It would help block the raise of the hot sun from your head. You wandered around aimlessly. Even though you felt safe with your sword by your side, the forest you were in had a bad reputation for attracting thieves, murderers, and thugs. It provided them a safe secluded place to hide from their enemies. However, you didn’t know nor did you care of the dangers. You just kept walking like the rogue samurai that you were.
You suddenly stop walking. Something attracted your attention. You begin to listen to the birds around you. But it wasn’t the melody of the birds, no, it was something devious. Something was moving around to your left. You heard movement and then snapping of some twigs. Then faintly you could hear the voice of a man. “You just sit comfortably right there on those rocks! Don’t move!”
You peek through the bamboo trees and right away you can see a man with black hair and sharp menacing eyes pushing a girl onto a large stone on the ground to sit on. You knew right then and there that he was up to no good. Then your attention went to the girl. She was in a traditional floral purple kimono dress. She had long black silky shiny hair. You could see that her hands were tied up and she was clearly frightened.
“Your family is being incredibly stubborn! Your idiot father won’t bend. He doesn’t want to pay the ransom fee.” As the man said that she closed her eyes shaking and turned her head away from him in terror. He screamed at her as the man was clutching to what looked like a small dagger.
“Please stop…” The girl cried out trying not to incite the man’s anger. As soon as she said that he put the dagger down but began to laugh in her face.
His expression changed quickly however, from amusement to pure anger. He growled in frustration. “You were supposed to make me rich!” The man now continues expressing his frustration as he waves his dagger wildly in her face.
You could see it in her eyes as you looked towards her. She was incredibly terrified. The man must have kidnapped her and was now holding her for ransom, so you thought. You came to the conclusion that her family must be wealthy. Her glamorous kimono was a dead giveaway. You stood there looking and wondering if it would be worth your time to save this girl. To you it would be easy and the reward money for her safe return doesn't sound bad at all. Kidnappings like that happen all the time, especially in this day and age.
You thought about situation even more. Getting involved requires a lot of work. Where did the girl live exactly? If the father wouldn't pay the ransom money, what chances do you have at seeing any money at all yourself for her safe return? You thought that it could even all be a simple trap to steal your weapon and your money. You know for a fact that a lot of con artists are on the rise in the land. You look to the left of the man and then to the right. It doesn’t seem like anyone else is with them, waiting to ambush you.
You now stared into the girls dark watery tear filled eyes one last time. It was as if her eyes alone were calling you. You felt conflicted inside. That’s when the man said something else.
“Maybe if I send your family one or two of your little fingers, THEN perhaps they would be swayed. Yeah, that’s what I'll do!” The man chuckled at his brilliant idea. He aggressively grabs her hands and moves his dagger closer to them.
She began shaking violently struggling to get him away from her. “Please I beg you!! Don’t!!”
