It was the summer of 82 and my dad decided it was a great idea to move and drag me with him. This year was already shitty enough and now I'm moving thousands of miles away to the middle of nowhere, to a damn farm, of all things. I'll start with something easier, my name is Zack and my dad's name is Brad. We lived in New Jersey with my mom and my little sister until they went missing in the middle of the night. The police never found any bodies or any other evidence so after 90 hours worth of search parties the sheriff finally called it quits and said she just got up and left my dad, which I don't think is true. We waited a little while after that to see if there were any new leads on the case but nothing ever came up so dad thought it would've been better to start over. So we began the house hunt. My dad stumbled across an old farm house that was built in 1915 on over 30 acres of farmland that had been foreclosed. I didn't understand why it was foreclosed though, the pictures from the website looked beautiful and newly redone, so maybe it was just all the land that came with it. Shortly after buying it, we made the 16 hour road trip to my new doom. From the big city to the cow land. After we finally pulled into the driveway you'll never guess what was behind it, that's right a huge cornfield that completely towered over us. From the looks of it, it stretched on for miles but near the center it looked like there was a building standing there. I don't remember my dad saying anything about another building so maybe it wasn't part of our property. Suddenly my dad started yelling for me and I ran over to see what was wrong, and not even 5 minutes of being here we had already found a dead crow, and if I've read enough books that's not a very good sign. We pushed the bird into the grass and started to unpack the U-Haul and truck into the house. The house had, from what dad told me, 4 bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, an attic and the cellar. This is a house a huge family would typically move into but it was just us two. On the Brightside I got to pick my room, so I chose the one on the second floor with the bay window that overlooked the corn rows. To actually look at the corn field from a higher point is absolutely gorgeous I put the box down that I had in my hand and stared out the window in amazement just looking over all the land and out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a girl standing there in the corn, but I don't remember seeing any neighbors on the way in. I'll make sure to ask him about that later, but for now I just wanna get the stuff loaded in. I started my way back down the stairs and I noticed a door at the end of my hallway and walked towards it, it was a creepy old door with a brass handle. I went to open the door but it was locked for some reason. I remember the set of keys that the realtor gave my dad. I wonder if it would be on those? Oh well, I'll ask dad for them later once we get done. I turned and started back down the stairs, as I started back down I heard a small creek, and I turned and the door cracked open. Wasn't it just locked though? I walked to the door and opened it and saw a huge spiral staircase that looked un-sturdy and dusty like nobody had been up there in a while. I started up the stairs very carefully, around and around until I finally got to the top and stopped dead in my tracks. There was a huge red spot in the middle of the floor right next to what looked like a ring screwed into the floor. The kind you you used to see during the medieval times as torture cells. I walked up a little further and realized that I was in the attic and it was absolutely huge compared to the other bedrooms and older looking compared to the rest of the house, which was unusual, like this wasn't touched for a reason. The realtor never gave us a background on the house and I really wanna know what happened here, maybe nothing, the red spot could just be spilled paint, who knows? I looked around some more and noticed there was one little circle window that looked over the back of the house and pretty much all its land. I looked through it and was able to see the barn, a huge reddish brown barn. I was about to turn to leave when all the sudden the hairs on my neck stood up and it turned freezing in the attic. So cold I could literally see my breath as I was breathing and I got a bad feeling in my gut and turned to leave and as I turned there stood the little girl I saw earlier in front of my face. "Grace? Is that you?" She just looked at me with a blank face and she looked as if she had been playing in mud or in dirt or something. She just stared at me for another few minutes and then out of nowhere she smiled and backed into a corner of the attic and sank down to her knees. " Grace, we've been looking for you and mom for almost 6 months! Where have you been?! Where is mom? How did you guys get out here?!" She looked up at me and lifted her arm to point at the little window. Confused, I went over to the window and looked out and there stood the exact same little girl that was with me in the attic. My skin went cold and I slowly turned around to see she was gone. I felt like I was gonna pass out, my stomach turned and I felt even colder. Grace was my little sister that went missing with my mom and the little girl that was here could have been her twin. I immediately took off down the stairs and slammed the door to the attic, hoping I would never have to go back up there. I turned and slammed right into my dad. "Zack, where have you been? I have been yelling for you for almost 20 minutes?" He had a confused yet mad look on his face. "Dad I think I just saw Grace upstairs, then all the sudden she was in front of the barn out back, is there something wrong with me?" He turned almost pale white which was unusual for him and he looked at the door to the attic as if he was zoning out, he finally turned to me with a blank expression and said, "Zack I'm pretty sure you just psyched yourself out and got your nerves worked up, it's been a hard few months on the both of us" I started to think about it and realized he was probably right since it was a new house and everything so I just turned with him and left to finish unpacking. After a few more hours of unpacking and terrifying silence we finally finished unloading everything, and we began to put our new house together. I started in my room and my dad started in the kitchen, putting all the dishes away. I loved my room in a way it was calming and quiet, unlike the previous encounter I had in the attic. I keep telling myself that it was just stress playing mind games with me and it was no big deal but I just couldn't get over how much that little girl looked like grace, it was scary close. I still think we moved way too fast but dad seemed pretty forward on moving into a new place. As I was putting my things away I didn't realize that it had started to get dark and the way the sun set on the corn field looked gorgeous. It was nice for a minute to think about something else other than what was happening to us all. Since we didn't have cable yet or anything I hooked up my DVD player and started to watch some of my DVD's that I had collected over the years and my dad walked into my room. He didn't say anything at first he just kind of stood there and was staring at me as if he'd seen a ghost. "Dad? Are you okay? Is there something wrong?" He just kept staring at me the same way he did earlier when I told him what I saw in the attic. It was starting to scare me now. "DAD?! HELLO?!" He finally looked at me and blinked a few times, " hey kiddo I'm sorry i was thinking about something for a minute, are you hungry? Want me to order some takeout?" That was weird, he never called me kiddo before. I mean I'm 17, why would he call me that now? "No I'm okay thanks though dad I appreciate it, I'm probably gonna get some sleep so I can get up early, I love you" He came over to my bed and gave me a hug and told me he loved me and just walked out. That was super strange, something he's never done before, but I chalked it up to him just being as nervous as I was. Big mistake. I got up and closed my door and turned off my light so I could finish my movie and fall asleep, I was just about to fall asleep when I heard someone call my name. "Dad? What do you want?" No answer. "Hello? Dad?" No answer. I shrugged my shoulders and laid back down and I heard it again, someone yelling my name. I rolled out of bed and opened my door, "Dad what?" nothing. I turned on my light and for some reason it wouldn't turn on but my Tv was working. "That's strange" I walked down the hall and walked down the stairs to find my dad sitting on the couch staring at a Tv screen full of static. "Dad, what are you doing?" He got up and looked at me for a minute before he spoke, " nothing kiddo I was getting ready to head to bed, what's up?" I looked at him funny, "Didn't you just call my name?" He shook his head no to me and said it was probably just the walls echoing the Tv and to go back to bed. I looked at him and turned to walk back up the stairs and he didn't move, he just watched me walk all the way up the stairs as if to make sure I went back to bed. I waited a few minutes and I creeped back down the stairs just in time to see him grab the key ring the realtor gave him and leave out the back door. I ran straight up to my room to look out the back window, but I made sure to close and lock my door first. I went to the window and saw the corn moving as if someone was walking through it, and sure enough it was my dad. He was heading straight for the barn. "What is out there dad?" I wanted to follow him but I knew I would get lost and probably get hurt so I just stayed. I eventually lost sight of him but I wanted a clearer view and as much as I didn't want to go back, I knew the perfect place to see everything, the attic. I ran to my door and unlocked it and took off down the hallway to the attic door, which was unlocked. I started up the stairs, shaking. I got to the top and ran to the window and looked out and saw the light to the barn was on and the big doors were closed. I wonder what he was doing. I looked at my watch and it was 5:30 in the morning, why was he even awake? I kept looking through the window hoping to see him come back out but he didn't and that's when the hairs stood up on my neck again. I knew what was about to happen and I turned Casper white. I didn't wanna turn around to find what was waiting for me on the other side of the room. I felt something breathing on my neck and almost dropped to my knees. I slowly turned to find two little girls in the same outfit, like twins only this time they were covered in blood. "What do you want from us?" They just looked at me and smiled, but their teeth were gone. That's impossible they couldn't be more than 11-12 years old. Why were their teeth gone? "What happened to you guys?" they just stared at me a little longer and they finally pointed to the window again. I walked over to the window and I'm not sure what I was seeing. It looked to be a family who was doing farm work, I saw the two little girls that were behind me a minute ago playing with what looked like a horse, then I heard screaming. It was coming from the man on the farm who was taller and more built than my dad but older looking. He had a scythe in his hand running at the girls with it. Then it was dark again, I turned to see the little girls had moved, one on each side of the room in different corners. "What did he do to you?" They never answered, they both pointed at the floor where I was standing. Right in the red stain on the floor. "Did he hurt you guys?" They both shook their heads yes. They both started to walk to me and put their hands on my shoulders. I blinked and when I opened my eyes I realized I was chained to the floor by the ring and I wasn't wearing anything other than my shorts. There was furniture in the room and it was lit, I noticed there was a man standing across the room with his back facing towards me. I opened my mouth to ask where I was but I realized I couldn't talk. I reached up with my hands to my mouth mortified to find that my tongue was gone! I started to panic and the man turned to me, "Shh Shh Shh Daddy's gonna take care of you darlings, don't you worry your pretty little heads." I tried yanking the chain up out of the floor and it wouldn't budge at all. I couldn't scream, or cry, or say no. I was stuck. The man turned back around and walked up to the window of the attic where there was a little bowl and held up something out of the bowl, at first I didn't see what it was until he brought it closer to my face and I realized he had my fucking tongue in his hands. "Looking for this?" He looked at me and smiled as he put the tongue back and picked up a pair of bloody pliers. He looked at me and smiled a smile I've never seen a human have. "Open wide honey, Daddy's gonna take care of those baby teeth for you" He took off running towards me and I slammed my eyes shut and put my head in my lap, I knew it was over as I heard his footsteps slamming closer. Boom Boom Boom BOOM BOOM BOOM. Then it was quiet. After a few minutes I opened my eyes to find myself in the fetal position on the attic floor. I had to find out what happened in this house. Whatever it was, it wasn't good. I ran back to the window and the barn lights were still on so I knew my dad was still there. I ran back down to my room and locked the door and tried to fall asleep but that was impossible without nightmares. I finally fell asleep as the sun came up and slept until about noon. When I got up, I made my way downstairs to find my dad making lunch. "Hey bud, How did you sleep?" I just looked at him. "Fine, you?" He continued making the food and looked back at me and smiled. "Like a baby" That was super weird considering that he was in the barn at 5 in the morning. He's been acting off since we got here, I wanna know what's going on. It's definitely not fucking stress. "Hey dad, I thought I would go and explore the cornfield today, any good recommendations of places to explore?" He stopped what he was doing and looked at me wiping his hands, "Not that I know, just be careful kiddo okay?' I nodded my head and out the door I went. I circled out back and started in the corn field. I was about 10 minutes into the cornfield and that's when I heard the giggling. There were no kids nearby, so please tell me how there's kids giggling? "Hello? Is someone out there?" No answer. I kept walking and the corn stalks moved as if someone was running through them. I took off after them. "HEY WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!! THIS IS PRIVATE PROPERTY!!" I ran and ran until I came to a clearing where the barn stood in front of me. It was huge compared to what it looked like. I went up to the doors and tried to pull but they wouldn't budge. They were padlocked shut. Why? What's in there? I tried around back and nothing. I saw a few cracks in the front enough to at least get a peek into the barn. I went back to the front and looked into the holes. It was huge inside and from what I could see there were multiple shelves of different tools on the wall, including the scythe. I leaned back for a second. "Could that be the one from the attic??" I looked back in and tried to look for a better view. I finally found one on the side of the barn and I looked in and there was a brick wall inside the barn. How weird? Why is there a brick wall inside a barn? It looked like it was a circle wall like some people use to build fire pits with. There was no way I was getting inside so I figured I would just steal dad's keys and come back later, plus I wanted to go through dad's office to see if there was any information on the house. I started back through the cornfield and finally made it back to the house just in time to catch dad. "Hey sport, I'm gonna run into town and get a few things for dinner and the house. Do you need anything?" I knew this was a perfect time to go through his office. "No thanks dad I'm probably just gonna hang around here and watch some movies" He looked at me and smiled. "Okay kiddo I'll be back soon I love you" I told him I loved him and watched him leave the house. As soon as he pulled out of the driveway and down the road I took off to his office. Thank god he always leaves it unlocked. I went in and started to look through his files and drawers and in the closet and I didn't find anything. I was about to leave when I noticed the box on top of the hutch. I drug the chair over to get it down and boy was it heavy. I dropped in onto his desk and as I did something dropped from underneath his desk. I looked on the floor to find it was a small key. I have no idea what it's for though. I started to go through the box and it's just what I was looking for. I pulled out the files and started at the beginning, the house was originally built by a preacher and his wife. They had no kids till about two years later and ended up with triplets. They lived in the house for about 3 years until the wife and the children disappeared into thin air. After that I guess it says that the priest had a mental breakdown and hung himself in the barn, his body was recovered but his wife's and kids never were found. After that the house didn't go back on the market till about 5 years later to a young couple who was able to fix it up a little, they too had no kids. They lived in the house for about 6 years and along that time had a baby girl. It says that the man came home one day to find his wife and daughter gone. People thought she might have run away at first but they never found her or her baby. Why was everyone going missing? Was there something wrong with the house? After that the man moved out and was never seen again. The house went on to be owned by the bank for a while and then was bought by a farmer and his wife, and her two little twin girls. "Are those the little girls I've been seeing everywhere?" It read the same thing the others did, his wife and little girls went missing and they were never found but nobody knows what happened to him. He just vanished. After them the house was foreclosed and then bought in 1981 by my dad? There's no way. Me and dad never moved in here till now 1982. How is that possible? That would've been before mom and Grace went missing? There's no way dad would've gotten that around us. Could he? I wonder where they could be. Did mom really take Grace and leave me? Or did something else happen to her? The police said they didn't find any signs of foul play so that should rule dad out right? I put the box back up and picked up the key that had dropped. I started looking for a chest or drawer to unlock and after about an hour of searching I finally found a small drawer in the file cabinet that was locked. I put the key in and it was a perfect fit. Why would he hide this key? I opened the file cabinet to a file that had my name on it. What for? I took the file out and sat in my dad's chair and started to read. Zack Rylan McGregor, 4.4oz, Male, Father: Brad Daniel McGregor, Mother: Sophie Marie Jeston. No fucking way. That can't be. My mom's name was Angela Stevenson. Or so I thought. It says that Sophie Jeston was my birth mother but she died in childbirth due to complications. I dropped the file in shock, "So Angela is my stepmom?! That mean's Grace isn't even my real sister? WHAT THE FUCK" I'm 17 fucking years old and I had to find out through a damn file?!. What is even happening? I put the file back and as I was closing the drawer I heard a sound like someone watching scratching the floor. I followed the sound into the living room and the color drained my face again. This time it wasn't two little girls it was three. They were taking chalk and coloring on the floor of my living room. "How did you guys get here? What happened to all of you? Were you killed here?" They all stopped what they were doing and looked up at me and stood up. I stepped back and they surrounded me, they each grabbed a part of my clothes and led me over to the place they were coloring with the chalk. I looked down and it read "ALIVE". "Who's alive? You guys?" They shook their heads no. They were about to talk and I heard my dad's car door close. I looked back to the living room and everything was the same as before. No little girls, no alive signs. My dad walked through the doors and looked at me. I was pissed. "Hey sport what's wrong? You okay?" How funny of him to ask. "No dad, I'm not fucking okay, Why didn't you tell me my birth mother died?" his face dropped after that, "Kiddo I'm sorry I was trying to save you the pain and try and help plus Angie was an amazing mother." Why did he say she was? "What were you doing in the barn this morning at 5 am dad?" He picked up some more groceries and looked at me "Oh kid that, I was woken up last night and I had to make sure that nobody was in the garage" Right. "Yeah, Well I'm gonna get some sleep. I didn't get too much of it last night" He came over and hugged me and told me sweet dreams like he's not being suspicious. As he was hugging me I swiped the master keys to everything and I am going to wait till he goes to sleep and I'm going to the barn. I went up to my room and stuffed the keys under my pillow and waited for him to go to sleep. I had ended up passing out and woke up around 3 am and got up. I checked the light to the barn and it was off, my time to go. I opened my door and tip-toed down the stairs and opened the back door and took off through the corn. After about 15 minutes of endless turns I made it and put the keys in the door. There were what seemed like millions of keys so it took me forever but I finally found the right key, the lock clicked and the door swung open. I was finally inside. I went straight to the circle wall and looked down. It was a well not a fire pit, I couldn't see the bottom but for some odd reason there was a ladder leading down and it was all black. Apparently there was nothing from what I could see so I turned to leave and apologize to dad when I heard the whimpers. I stopped for a second thinking maybe it was an animal, and it was silent. "Hello" I whispered, trying to hear something again. Then I heard it, it was coming from the fucking well. I immediately started looking for a flashlight and found one in an old tool box. I turned it on and shined it to the bottom of the well. I nearly passed the hell out or puked, one of them. It was mom and Grace. They were chained to the bottom of the well by the same ring that was in the attic. I grabbed a pair of bolt cutters from the wall of tools and took off down the ladder. After I finally got down there I removed the gag from their mouths and as I was cutting the chains my mom finally looked at me.
"I'm so sorry Zack I tried to grab you and run but he wouldn't let me. There is something wrong with this house that makes people do crazy and dangerous things, we need to all get out of here." I looked at her and shook my head yes and we started back up the ladder, but to my surprise when I got to the top of the ladder, there stood dad. "Heyyyy good ol' family reunion ain't it?!" He looked like something else, like the man from the attic. "You know this house and land was buried on an Indian ancient burial ground? I bet ya didn't know that did you? It's nice to see us all here in the end together one last time". One last time? What did he mean "What do you mean dad" I pushed the girls behind me and grabbed the scythe. "Well to start each and every person in this house has been possessed and killed their families, ain't that fun?" His face twisted into a sadistic smile and he leaned in and whispered to me, "And this is going to be another one for the history books!" He charged at me and swung the axe he had hidden behind his back, I pushed the girls out of the way and ducked. He would've taken off my head, I swung the scythe at him and cut open his shirt on his chest. That just made him more mad at me. He came at me faster and harder, I took off near the well and swung his axe and snapped the scythe in two. He stood up on the side of the well with a demon in his eyes. "We're all gonna be a family again!!" I knew this was it, I closed my eyes as he was about to swing the axe to me. I expected to be hit but I wasn't, when I opened my eyes mom and grace had shoved the blade of the scythe through dad's chest. He looked at me as he went down into the well below. It was morning now so we could see inside the well as he fell to his demise. We thought that would've been it, but as we started to leave we heard a blood curdling scream coming from the well. We rushed over to find that there were little hands, kid hands, coming up from underneath the dirt of the well and slowly dragging dad down with them into the pits of hell. Back to where he belonged. Mom, Grace and I took hands and decided it was time to start somewhere new. All over again.
