Chapter 11
Kara
Blaze helps me unpack my things into the loft type area of our room. It’s a strange layout for a bedroom. Two ladders lead up to two platforms, each hold a queen size bed with white sheets perfectly folded over the corners of the mattresses. I plop onto my bed and begin unfolding the comforter that I managed to steal from the castle. It’s a cornflower blue with embroidered butterflies and flowers that seem to swim across the fabric. I run my hand over the comforter lovingly before spreading it over the bed. Blaze glances over from her side of the room.
“You know Kara, something about you is really familiar, but I can’t put my finger on it.”
“I know, it’s crazy. Did we know each other from…”
“Probably not. My parents kinda sheltered me. This is...my first time at a real school even.”
“Same. Probably because of King Henry.” I spit his name out like poison.
“That little-” She curses. “Killing off the shifters, the Drage, and who knows where the royal family is.”
“I’ve heard they’re in hiding in the enchanted forest.”
“Enchanted or Forbidden?”284Please respect copyright.PENANAmWQuUle4eW
“They’re the same, just depends on who you ask and when you ask them.”
“Mmm.” She pulls out a guitar from her bag and plays a lazy western style chord and hums the tune almost every child in Ericlyn has learned. In the palace we were forbidden from even mentioning the Prophecy. “One to watch the empire fall and one to reign above them all.”
“One to raise their sword and fight, One to bring the Drage to light” I finish, we look at each other and laugh. I plop on my bed and fluff the pillows. “Hey Blaze”
“Yeah Kara”
“I have something to tell you.” She turns to face me on her bed.
“Of course, whats up?”
‘Don’t do it.’ Says a voice. ‘She’ll hate you.’ I pause.
“Your...a really great friend.” I manage a smile and she beams with a wet sheen over her eyes. “I...haven’t exactly been able to have a friend, but your pretty great.”
“Thank you. And I haven't really either. My childhood friend ended up being something more…” She smiles and traces the guitars dragonesque designs along it. “You’re a really cool girl Kara.”
“And you’re fantastic too Iris, everyone loves you!” says a voice from behind me, I jump.
“Iris No! You can’t just float wherever you please! Knock first.” I roll my eyes.
“Fine! I’ll just leave you two lonely children alone.” She drifts back downstairs.
“Sorry about that, she's the only other friend I have and I wanted to make sure I had someone I knew, no matter how insane.”
“I know insane, believe me.” Her almost smug look turns to knitted eyebrows and a dirty look. “A friend?” Oh no.
“I met her before our classes changed for the new semester. She kinda took me under her wing.”
“Took you under her wing? She’s more of the kind of girl who would steal your eyes then leave you for dead.” She stands up and cracks her knuckles. “How did she warm up to you? You said you were only there for a few weeks, about three, one week is in between the semesters and that would mean that you would have had to form a really close bond with that maniacal little chark.”She tilts her head. “I knew I recognized you from somewhere.”
My expression hardens. “I never tried to hurt you that day in the forest. It was an accident.”
“I never said anything about the forest” Blaze lunges across the platforms, tackling me against the window. Her wings are spread, fanning through the air and pushing me back into the glass. “How dare you!” She screeches “You could have killed me!” I hang my head
“I never meant to hurt you” I look up at her, tears brimming in my eyes “H-Henry would have killed me.”
“Why didn’t he kill you then? When he killed all the other shifters and when you let me go? Why would he spare you.”
“He said I was special, that I could help him. He trained me, clothed me, gave me everything in order for me to become a weapon of war.”
“Henry slaughtered my people!”
“Well he slaughtered mine too! Get over yourself!” I yell back, shoving her away.
“He murdered my parents in front of my eyes!” She shakes, a tear falling to the carpet. “I was NINE!”
“Oh you think your so special Blaze. You are not the only person with a hard life! Henry killed my father, I don’t know where my mother is. Every single day of my life Henry told me I was useless, good for nothing without him.” I grab her by the wrist and make her look into my eyes “But I’m not, and neither are you!” With that, I climb down the ladder, storm into the hallway, and down the stairs to the living room, leaving Blaze speechless. I plop on the couch and sigh, bringing out my phone to text Dustin.
“Oof.” Iris leans on my shoulder, making her long blue hair fluff around my head. “She found out, and after you just started making a friend. Mortals are pathetic. Never tell each other what their feelings are. Not before it’s too late.”
“Go away Iris, I’m not in the mood.”
“Oh, angsty aren’t we?” She says just as Blaze comes thundering down the steps. “Hey where are you going?”
“Out. Don’t worry, I’ll be back.” She doesn’t take her eyes off of me as she grabs her helmet, and rushes out the door.
