Episode 42 - Church of Sin
“Oh, my,” Grell said, holding his chainsaw over his shoulder as we all stood outside an abandoned town. “So of all places to sin, they chose a church? Isn’t that just… so ironic?”
“What’s ironic is that stereotype of those pastors who fuck little boys,” Carter said then.
Sebastian spared him a glance. “Carter, language.”
“Yes,” I said, smirking as I walked forward, “please, don’t alert everyone else of Sebastian’s favorite pass time.”
He spared me an amused glance, but I just stepped up to the church’s front entrance.
But my foot caught on a small dent in the porch, the heel of my shoe sinking in, and I cried out when my ankle rolled out from under me.
A shock of pain struck through my every being, but I caught myself before I fell.
“Master!” Sebastian said, running up to me. “Are you alright?”
“Did she hurt herself?” Cammie said then, stepping forward as Scarlet and the other two scanned for threats.
I breathed shakily, but Sebastian just caught under my arm. “Yes,” I said then, “just a dent in the sidewalk, is all.”
The moment I stepped forward, something sharp struck up my leg, and I cried out, falling forward.
Sebastian caught me before I fell.
I just winced, a bead of sweat slipping down my forehead. “Goddamn it. Figures. Right before the big fight, too.”
“Master, let me see,” he said gently, helping me down onto the ground.
I watched hazily as he lifted my foot and lightly slid off my shoe.
Another slice of pain cut through me when my ankle bent, and I closed my eyes tightly, whimpering.
I kept my body tight as he pulled off my sock, and when I opened my eyes, I saw all other servants gathered around me.
Even that… Grell guy. Who looked concerned.
Why was everyone concerned?
“It’s bruised,” Scarlet said quietly.
“Definitely a sprain,” Maddox stated.
“We should go home,” Cammie said then.
“No!” I yelled then, making them all blink, but I just pinched my brows together. “We came here for a reason. We are not leaving until Edward and Claudia are taken care of, do you understand?”
“But, master… doesn’t this put you more at risk?” Maddox whispered quietly. “I mean… I know how much you want to do this job, but isn’t it for your own safety?”
“Oh, you think you can convince this child?” Grell said then, laughing. “A bunch of idiots. Once Ciel sets his mind on something, then he will get it within a moment’s notice.”
Carter just spared him an annoyed glance. “Master’s name is not Ciel.”
Grell just gazed down then, expression growing numb.
“It’s alright,” Sebastian said then, making me gaze up, blinking. “We have other plans, master.”
“No!” I argued then. “I told you that I wanted to do this today!”
He just smiled, eyes glowing dangerously. “You misunderstood. I meant we can still go through with the plan, but with a different manor.”
I blinked then, brows drawing together. “How? I cannot walk.”
“Exactly, so I shall carry you.” He smiled, sliding his arm under my bottom. “Come, now. We must hurry.”
I gasped when he lifted me like a child, letting me use his arm as a seat and it didn’t falter with my weight in the slightest.
I fell onto him and tightly clutched onto his shirt, cheeks burning a bright red.
A small smile formed on my lips, but I attempted to hide it.
“Comfy, master?” Sebastian said, stepping forward.
“Yes.”
“Are we actually doing this?” Carter said then. “With master all injured and all?”
“Carter,” Sebastian said calmly, “are you growing cold feet?”
“What?” he said then, offended. “No! I’m just worried about her, is all.”
“I’ll take care of our master,” Sebastian said as he continued to carry me. “You all just try to stay alive, alright?”
“I see why he hired us,” Scarlet said sarcastically.
“I honestly don’t know why these children get all the good looking men,” Grell said then, sighing as he followed after us. “She gets Bassy and these two handsome servants.” He eyed Carter and Maddox, but they both ignored him.
We all stopped at the giant, front doors, gazing up at it uneasily as I popped my lips.
“So… what do we do now?” Cammie said then. “Knock? Enter?”
“Here’s a thought.” Sebastian smiled darkly and swung his leg out, slamming it into the front doors and caving them inward.
The doors flew off their hinges and clashed with the end of the room, shattering to pieces when they hit the wall.
Sebastian just smiled and settled back onto his feet. “I’ve always wanted to do that. I hate these places.”
He then walked in while carrying me, and they followed after him.
“So sexy,” Grell muttered, “did you see how strong those legs are? Yum.”
“Oh, shut it,” I hissed. “Will I have to listen to this all day?”
“I’m afraid you’re correct, master,” Sebastian said then, smirking as we stopped at the end of the room. “He is a nuisance.”
“I try my best.” Grell flipped his red hair over his shoulder, gazing around. “You know… I just noticed. This is all church but with no people. And it’s Sunday. Is that normal?”
“The town is abandoned, dumbass,” Cammie said then, stepping past him. “Or haven’t you noticed?”
He just grumbled under his breath, and I gazed up at Sebastian as he stared at the wall ahead of us carefully. “Do you sense anything?” I asked him.
He squinted his eyes and glanced back at me. “Master, they’re both here.”
“Who?” I said then.
But a voice came from behind us:
“OH, my! Madam Phantomhive! It’s been long, hasn’t it?”
Everyone flipped around, but Sebastian turned more slowly.
Madam Claudia stood far ahead, by the church’s doors, and she smiled when she gestured to a figure standing next to her. “This is my favorite person here, Edward. Have you met him?”
My lashes lowered. “Unfortunately.”
“We’ve been waiting for you,” Edward said, voice dark as he smiled. “You were a month late.”
“I’m sorry,” Sebastian said too kindly, “but it seems you’ve forgotten that you took my master’s soul and hid it. She needed time to recover.”
“I told you to hide it somewhere other than my manor,” Claudia hissed then. “Did you really think they wouldn’t find it?”
“I was planning on eating it that night,” Edward said honestly. “But of course... the storm drew me back.”
“You must always consider other possibilities, I’m afraid,” Sebastian said then, lashes lowering as he smiled. “Weather, demons, angels, nature. It happens sometimes. You can never be too prepared.”
“I think he’s learned his lesson, Sebastian,” Claudia said then, gazing over at me. “There’s the evidence right now.”
I just kept my position, and we all stared down at her for a moment.
“Ah, yes… it’s you,” Claudia stated then, tipping her head to the side when she gazed over at Scarlet. “It wasn’t very nice of you to leave my manor without saying goodbye. Especially with all the snooping about you did… stealing from me.”
“It wasn’t considered stealing when it never belonged to you,” Sebastian said gently. “It seems as if none of you humans ever understand that.”
“It’s sad, isn’t it?” I said, smiling a little as my lashes lowered. “Your demon friend keeps you reeled in like bait on a hook, hoping that you won’t attract too much attention until he eats your soul. That way Scarlet could sneak into your house and feed your desire for interaction.” I then glanced over at Edward. “You are cruel, indeed.”
His smile just deepened.
“So, why are you really here?” Claudia said then, tipping her head to the side. “However, did I earn the infamous Earl Phantomhive’s presence at this very day?”
“You’ve been killing and kidnapping innocents,” I stated then, growing slightly numb. “I was ordered by King Charles to stop you, so I shall.”
“That’s all?” she said then, smiling a little. “Aren’t you even a little curious about my creatures? You did seem very confused as to Eileen’s appearance. Don’t lie to me, you’re curious, aren’t you?”
“Not even remotely,” I said then. “In fact… your childish schemes don’t interest me in the slightest. I’m just sick and tired of the tools you use to create your projects. It’s not even creative.”
Her smile fell then, and she just clenched her teeth. “Such a brat, aren’t you? It’s all about you. You really think that everything is about you, don’t you?”
“Why are you so interested in cyborgs?” Sebastian questioned then. “It’s a boring subject, don’t you think?”
Her fists clenched at her sides. “I want to rewrite history.”
“Don’t we all?” I snapped.
“No, I want to rewrite the soul’s history,” she said then, lashes lowering. “Each soul has a task every lifetime. Go here, go there, suffer this, live that! What happens… if the soul just doesn’t belong to a human? What would happen if it wasn’t human at all, huh?” She gestured to Edward then. “I mean… look! Look who’s in this room!” She pointed to Sebastian. “Demons!” Then to Grell. “Reapers! Doesn’t this interest you? Supernatural deities exist in this realm! It’s not all just office jobs and works of tears! It’s not all just fantasies in books and diaries! Humans could be like that too! Enhanced! It’s amazing, don’t you think? This is my dream! To make this world… truly... inhumane.” She gazed up then. “Doesn’t that interest you, Phantomhive? Even a little?”
“No,” I said then. “It’s a childish dream.”
She dropped her hands then, clenching them at her sides. “Of course you’d never understand. You think you’re the most perfect being, don’t you?”
I kept my expression masked. “At least I don’t go about murdering innocent people just to make useless creatures.”
She gritted her teeth then. “They’re not useless!”
“If they aren’t… then where are they?” I said then, gazing around. “Hmm? Yes, I know. They’re all in the basement, aren’t they? Under construction? They’re never going to work the way you want them! You have to give them body parts that connect to your… circuits. You replaced their elbows and knees without connecting them to brains! I saw that Eileen girl. She can walk, but she cannot bend her knees or move her arms. It’s… faulty.”
Claudia just clenched her teeth. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“You’re right, I wouldn’t.” I just gave her a numb look. “I’d never understand someone as sick as you.”
She just gritted her teeth tighter. “I’m done with you! Edward, kill her.”
He just gazed down. “Wait… kill her? But I thought—”
“Do I have to repeat myself?” she said then, lashes lowering. “I’m done with her. She’s a bitch, I want nothing to do with her.”
He just gazed up, eyes darkening. “This wasn’t part of the plan.”
“And what was? What was part of the plan, hmm? Do you seriously think that she’ll help us now? She’s so entitled.”
I just sighed. “Do you always talk about people as if they’re not here?”
“Shut up, you wench,” Claudia snapped.
I just gazed over at Sebastian who seemed too calm right now.
“You all are worthless peasants, aren’t you?” Claudia snapped. “Fine, then. I’ll do it myself!” She smiled sharply. “My only worthy creation will suit well enough. Eileen,
“Kill her.”
