I didn't have any muscles, or a lot of upper body strength at that. I mean, my friends and Mom always told me that I was abnormally strong, and my dark brown hair makes me look almost like a gang member if I don't but it into a high, messy bun. This might seem to be a bit awkard and random, but this information will come in handy at some point.
"Yeah, Cari, stop yelling. I'm almost there. Our boxing instructor let us out a bit late." I tucked in my phone into my back pocket, and watched a maple leaf fall onto my nose. Dusty Covers, my favorite book store had two exact maple trees, standing guard. I dropped my duffle bag right in front of my feet, and I placed my two arms out to maybe catch a good-luck leaf, but a long, dark figure whooshed down into them.
My left arm felt like a boulder had just smashed onto it, and I awkwardly balanced myself once again, and my eyes opened finally, slightly afraid of what was in my arms. Of course, in my mind, I had imagined falling into the arms of my lover, maybe while we were taking a romantic walk in... off the top of my head... in Paris, smelling the flowers and roses along the park's path. Yet, I'm the one holding a man in my arms, in front of a rusty, old book store, with two leaves on top of my head. Romantic indeed.
I screamed for a split second, but then I stared into this mystery man that seems to be unconscious in my wobbling arms. Dashing into the book store, I gently plopped the man onto the couch after shooing away a few children.
Waving my hands over his face, I repeated, "Excuse me? Mystery man? Hellooo? Are you alive? Excuse me? Excuse--"
Making my heart jump a beat... no about four beats, his large, bony, and cold fingers held mine, in effort to force me to stop.
"Oh gosh, I'm sorry. Uhm... are you okay?" His eyes closed, and dark circled of stress and sadness, squinted as a single light shone on his face.
"Why..." He mumbled.
"Huh? Sorry, I can't hear--"
"Why did you catch me? You weren't supposed to catch me! Let me bloody rest in peace!"
Then, it struck me. After thinking about for some time, I realized where he came from. Of course, he attempted suicide, and instead of dying, he landed into my faithful arms.
Not knowing what to do, I responded, "My arms... they're super heroes dude..."
His cold, blue eyes shot up, and looked at me, puzzled and obviously trying to figure out who I am. I continued, "My arms saved your life. Be grateful, Mystery Man." However, I leaned my face closer to his, and observed his young face that was just a bit withered from a very transparent experience of agony and misery. His dirty blond hair that was a bit wavy and messy, almost reached his steel marine eyes. His cheeks lacking in color, and lips in between ancient dimples, still yet to be discovered were frowning all at once after what I said before.
He groaned and rolled his eyes, staggering off the velvet couch and limping his way towards the door.
I picked up my duffel bag, and speed walked right behind him. After registering the fact that he was suicidal, my body automatically whirred its engine, and began to follow him
"What are you doing miss." His eyebrows dipped down, anger beginning to rise, but failing.
"What do you think, Mystery Man. You effing allowed me to realize my powers! I have to pay you back, purely from my own gratitude."
His husky voice rang in my ears, saying, "Don't you have somewhere to be?"
"I actually don't-- Oh no..."
I hurriedly began to call Cari, and when she picked up the phone, I even felt Mystery Man flinch.
"AMELIA WRISTON!! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU WHEN I FIND YOU!! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN! IT'S BEEN LIKE ALMOST 45 MINUTES!!"
"Cari! Calm yourself. I'm okay, just..." I looked up at the tall figure beside me, and it surprised me that he was still allowing me to walk with him. "Something came up. I'm alright, and let's meet for coffee another time. Love ya'"
I shut off my phone, and faced the man once again, but that time, with about 100x more confidence. "Dude, or whatever your name is, I'm going to stick right beside you."
"Why? Like you said before, you don't know my name."
"Well then, we'll just have to get to know each more, huh?"
"Your exuberance is really irritating me now."
I crossed my arms, and replied, "Using big words now? Challenge accepted."
Apparently, Mystery Man's name is Alexander Skirland, only a year older than me (29) and he has this huge apartment with everything anyone needs or wants.
A month after we met at the book store, I stepped into his apartment, a bit skeptical about entering his abode, but deep inside me, I realized that my body and mind just wouldn't let go of the image of Alex, disappearing before my eyes. It's crazy... we're perfect strangers, yet we had this strong connection, with a rope tying us together. 629Please respect copyright.PENANAB7l42DJrfZ
"Oh. My. Goodness. Alex, this place is GIGANTIC!! I'm going to have no problem adjusting here."
"Who said you're going to stay here? And why are you all of a sudden calling me Alex, as if we were friends since years before?"
"Me, and it feels like we've been friends since then. You and I, I think we have a special connection. Maybe we're soul mates!"
He chuckled, and for the first time, his cold, steel eyes hugged me in the inside, giving me hope that he'll appreciate life, and the joys about it. Yet, his smile faded, and the dark shadow casted over his face. He nodded his head, but before he said anything depressing once more, I interrupted, "If you say that you're unnecessary in this cruel world, or that you're alone, just shut up. I've only known you for a month now, and do you still feel like that?"
I was sick and tired of seeing Alex's dark expressions like that. Just simply sick. And tired. Endless attempts throughout that month welled up tears in my eyes, and I quickly wiped them away. I have to stay strong. I absolutely have to stay strong... for Stephen... someone that I should've done better things for before he left to the sky. However, even after wiping my hazel eyes, it wells up once again. My lips beginning to curl, and my breath becoming harder to control, I broke down from the thoughts, mainly from the last month with Alex, and a little bit of the memories with Stephen.
"I truly wanted to be your trustworthy arms you would fall into, just like the first day we met, yet I just can't stay strong enough when you make that fricking face Alex! I failed once, and I can't faile again!"
Suddenly, I felt Alex's long, yet warm arms wrap around my own, and his hands compared to a month ago, grew so much warmer, with more color splashing within his skin. "I think you already did. I'm not going anywhere Amelia. You said specifically that you were going to beat the shi** out of me if I did. I'm not taking any risks."
Of course... I love him. I just rejected the fact this whole time.629Please respect copyright.PENANANtawnJ0ktL
And I won't rest until he knows that for sure, until he finds the true jewels and lights about life, and how to actually smile once more.
THE END
